Picking through the Guyette & Deeter auction catalogue; interesting lots:
lot 222: Chapuis double rifle in 30-06. Not sure that this is a particularly useful calibre/ rifle combination for anything other than a European driven game shoot. Note that although the rifle comes with Recknagel claw mounts, the 'scope is missing. Replacing that will be expensive - why do people do this? Cheap bugger. Est. $5,000 - $8,000
lot 370: Winchester pre-64 Model 70 Alaskan in .375 H&H Magnum. Americans seem to rate these rifles very highly. Est. $2,000- $3,000
lot 383: Remington Model 700 in 7mm Remington Magnum. Comes with a Zeiss 'scope which - ceteris paribus - is probably worth the same as the rifle (ie. either buy the rifle and get the 'scope for free, or buy the 'scope and get the rifle for free). Est. $600 - $900
Otherwise, it all looks rather expensive.
I dropped into Guyette and Deeter yesterday to look at some of the guns. When I told Jon Deeter that the estimate on the Remington 700 was low he said that if there is a reserve it is the low end of the estimate so it could go for more than the upper end.
He invited me to the pre-auction party the night before so I will mingle with the rich folks.
If anyone from AH is going please let me know. I have a house there.
