When you think of contemporary Mauser actioned guns from London, or even best grade Belgian stuff, I use the back of the napkin math. In my mind, a 500 Jeffery that says “Jeffery” on it that was built by Paul Roberts should be similar to a modern Rigby production gun on the same single square bridge action in 450 Rigby also built by Paul Roberts. But one costs 11,000 pounds and the other 40,000 dollars? No, it is not worth 3x another similar fit/finish gun by the same management team in my opinion. Or compare it to any number of magnum caliber best grade Belgian Dumoulin safari rifles we see floating around at the ~$10,000 price point. Is the subject gun really worth 4x one of those?
Obviously, highly subjective comparisons of guns, but they are close to apples to apples comparisons. I thought a price of <$20,000 was generous because we’re basically saying its worth 1.5x a 450 Rigby from the same management team and I think we’d find a Rigby is more second hand marketable than a contemporary Jeffery, yet we’re giving it a 1.5x value at ~$20k.
How my mind works on things that are modern and for which there is no blue-book to look upon. If a bolt action gun is $40,000 and its modern, it better say Hartmann & Weiss on the barrel!
