Good Gun Deals This Week

Sorry I can’t paste the link for the exact listing, but if you scroll down there’s an Alex Martin 7mm with a short LOP for $2750.

What say you gentlemen? Would it be a decent youth rifle once you mounted a scope?

I don't know much about the rifle but I have very positive things to say about the dealer, Kirby Hoyt. I bought several vintage double shotguns from him and was pleased with all of them. I did have a problem with one of them and took it to my local gunsmith, the late Brad Bachelder. Brad contacted Kirby and Kirby paid for Brad to make the gun correct. Kirby is "good to go!"

Hilarious asking price for the gun. It’s a circa 2000-2010 J. Roberts & Son built on a single square bridge with the name ”Jeffery” applied. They built roughly 80 of these during that era. There is no way to assign a $40k price tag just because a guy owned the trade name “Jeffery” for a period of time. Not a “real” Jeffery.
Not that I'm in the market, but I emailed the seller. Well said.

Thank You.

At the time, I believe J. Roberts & Son was run by Paul Roberts who was affiliated with Rigby. That leaves two choices of action supplier to my knowledge for magnum single square bridges. A. Reimer Johannsen/Prechtl, B.) Mauser.

Either way, a wonderful action worth about $4500 in the white for the action alone.

I sincerely appreciate your knowledge,

This double rifle has a fair price in today's market. While not a super bargain, the price is at the low end of what I have seen for these during the past year.
I have no financial interest in this. I do however own an 88B...

No idea if this is a decent deal or not, but I came across it looking for doubles. Seems like it may have a tad more panache than a Ruger No1.

Looks decent to me, subject to a good inspection of the bore and chamber. The cautionary tale is only the difficulty of finding 450-400 3.25" brass these days as they have been in much shorter supply than the more popular 3". Due to rim thickness differences I'm unsure if you can make 3" from 3.25". @cal pappas might be the guy to render an opinion on this weapon.

As long as you test fire it before going after maneaters.

If I may, & you might entertain: would you have an idea what the proverbial cost of this might be?

Not sure what they charged new if that was your question? If I had to spitball that which would be similar to current value, sub-$20,000?

Thank You, this is the listing. I suppose it's a subjective question, or what the market will bear to the individual. Had you not spoke on behalf, I'd never known, however!

Well, I'll be passing by that store (its a 1hr drive from here) tomorrow afternoon. For the lever actions I'm mainly interested in the 30-30's, (I already have a .22 bolt action), so if anyone can point me to a good one, I might consider it.

I'm leaning towards the Marlin 336c in 30-30 for 650€ (715USD)

Or the winchester 94 XTR in 30-30 for 480€ (528USD)

Bit late to this party but I would take a pre-crossbolt Winchester over a crossbolt safety Marlin 100% of the time. If you want a scope however, Marlin is the only choice.

Besides the crossbolt issue the Winchester has a steel buttplate. When you smack someone in the face with it they will fall down. Hit someone with a rubber pad, we'll they might just kick your butt...and you would deserve it.

When you think of contemporary Mauser actioned guns from London, or even best grade Belgian stuff, I use the back of the napkin math. In my mind, a 500 Jeffery that says “Jeffery” on it that was built by Paul Roberts should be similar to a modern Rigby production gun on the same single square bridge action in 450 Rigby also built by Paul Roberts. But one costs 11,000 pounds and the other 40,000 dollars? No, it is not worth 3x another similar fit/finish gun by the same management team in my opinion. Or compare it to any number of magnum caliber best grade Belgian Dumoulin safari rifles we see floating around at the ~$10,000 price point. Is the subject gun really worth 4x one of those?

Obviously, highly subjective comparisons of guns, but they are close to apples to apples comparisons. I thought a price of <$20,000 was generous because we’re basically saying its worth 1.5x a 450 Rigby from the same management team and I think we’d find a Rigby is more second hand marketable than a contemporary Jeffery, yet we’re giving it a 1.5x value at ~$20k.

How my mind works on things that are modern and for which there is no blue-book to look upon. If a bolt action gun is $40,000 and its modern, it better say Hartmann & Weiss on the barrel!
