If you can ever find evidence that I have ever owned a 243 you can call me Monica. When I visited @rdog he showed me his 243 and asked if I wanted to hold it. I politely declined as I didn't want to be contaminated. It was a nice looking rifle but it was a 243. No way would my hands touch it.

Also, I fear you would somehow try to “Block the Sale” because I already own a .243 and am therefore Disqualified From the EXCLUSIVE “Whelen” CLUB

Just because you own a 243 doesn't exclude you from the Whelen fraternity but you do have to own a Whelen. Maybe you could sell the 243 and get a Whelen or rebarrel it to the baby Whelen the 358 win

They’ve had that for quite a while. It would be interesting to see what the experts say about it. It is the 3 1/4” version so that’s probably the main reason it’s been sitting there. Looks kinda rough too

I'm not familiar enough with it to know there are different versions of the cartridge. Only offering one pic certainly seems like they could be trying to minimize condition issues. Still an interesting old classic though.

I wondered whether it was always a 270 or if it was converted.

Just to give you perspective, a similar quality HH that was original 275HH flanged was converted to 6.5x57 and went through the auctions. It didn’t meet its $16k reserve.

Bottom line, I’d be very suspicious of a 270 Double unless i Could establish 100% that it is original. Even then, its an esoteric rimless for a double, so it would be a relatively illiquid investment.

It wouldn’t be where I would put $30k of my own money. (Conditionally: If it isn’t 100% originally a 270)

Here's a good gun deal this week. My local Ace Hardware is a sportsman's dream, it has lots of hunting/fishing stuff. The owner (Big Mike) showed me this gun.

It's a .22lr they believe was made in switzerland. I'm not sure if its a Stuetzen or a biathlon rifle? It has a 32" octogan barrel, it has a falling block action similar to, but not exactly like a Martini. Plenty of engraving, gold inlay, and really nice sights on it. I think its a bargain at $2599.

The only flaw I saw on it is someone topped off the stock with oil, and in so doing they clogged up the flat top checkering a bit. Careful work with dawn dish soap and water on a soft bristle toothbrush will get most of it, repeating it with mineral spirits should resolve the remainder. Other than that, I saw no gotchas whatsoever.

No idea what its worth, but comfortably I'd say $3500-$7000.

Our local independent Ace hardware is pretty sizable. Authorized Swarovski dealer, during the pandemic they still had a full aisle of powders/primers/bullets. Trout lures. Oh, and they sell taxidermy too. It's a local attraction if you ever get over this way. It reminds me of the early 20th century general stores where you could get everything you needed to live in one place.

I live in what is considered backwoods in the eastern side of the US and I have never seen any hardware store (that I have been in at least) that had anything but basic home/ repair stuff in any of the New England states

That's too bad. My companies sell to ace and I love visiting with those stores/locations to see what all they have in. Many of the franchises move quite a bit of guns and ammo and hunting items.

I have seen those before, they are quite common actually. Called a Schuetzen rifle. They are target rifles for a style of shooting where you are standing up, no support. That explains the amount of drop on the stock and the metal work that allows to grip the shoulder for maximum stability.

Although this is a nice example, much more embellished than usually, they do not often go for a lot of money. They are only good for their single purpose for which they were built, an activity that no longer exists, or as a wall hanger.
