Does anyone here like quarter-bores?

One of my favs… LH Weatherby Mark V MeatEater in 257 Roy. Those 100gr Sciroccos get it.

My .257 Weatherby may be my most accurate rifle.

It dropped the last pronghorn I shot at nearly 400 yards like the "Hammer of Thor" using Weatherby factory 100g. spire points (I don't think they still make them, but I wouldn't mind having a few more boxes).

I think heavier, well constructed bullets, with more SD, would work just fine on larger animals.

No the 243WIN (.243") is .014" smaller than the 25-06 (.257")

Kinda like the 35WHELEN (.358") being .018" smaller than the 375H&H (.376"). :ROFLMAO:
Correct, my comparison was in relation to a quarter bore really should be .250, a true 25.

A Man bun gun is .264 though we generally consider 6.5mm being close enough to drill a hole for a Quarter inch bolt. But we use the metric system and by shit from china so that’s a whole other argument.

With what you say being true that a .257 being bigger than a .243 then with a 6.5 Man Bun gun running .264 we will hear Bob singing praise of those next.

the new 6.5 Epps Newton Creedmoor Nelson,

I have three .25 cals - .257 Roberts , .25-06 and .257 Weatherby.
The .25 cals suit a lot of our Australian game from pigs up to deer - they all have have performed well.
As long as you place your shots of course.

@Challer
So that's like the .35 whelen will be a .375 H&H when or if it grows up? Just have to stir the pot a bit...
@Bob Nelson 35Whelen
@K-man
The 35 Whelen doesn't want to grow up its quite happy being a little brother tothe 375H&H
Where as the 25s are what the 243 always wanted to be but never can be.

Bob

Chris I will never sing the praises of the 6.5s especially the newer ones when I have a nice 25.
The old Swede 6.5x55 has been around long enough as well as the old 26o rem and 264 win mag to be known as good rounds in their own right they AIN'T 25s.
Bob

I own three. A Ruger No. 1 in 25-06, and two Weatherby Mark Vs in 257 Roy, a deluxe and Weathermark :)

One of my favorite rifles! I built my .257 Ackley in the late '70s, primarily for deer and pronghorn, but I have shot all of my mountain sheep with it along with a mountain caribou and my 2nd best 6x6 bull elk. All one shot bang flops.

I had a gunsmith in Kalispell, MT re-chamber a .25-06 Mauser Mark X barreled action, then I put it in a fancy Fajen walnut stock. I think it started wearing a Tasco or some other cheap scope, then for many years I had a 6X Lepuold on it, and recently I put a 4-14x40 Leupold with their B&C reticle on it.

@Dewald
With the 1 in 10 twist you can even stabilize the 117grain projectiles.
Loaded properly in a strong action it's no drama getting 3,000fps with 100gn projectiles and 2,700 with the 117grain SST.
Bob
Would love to find one of those old FN’s. Until I do I will continue to use my Ruger 77 RSI in 250-300. It shoots 100 grain partitions very well but just loves the 117 grain round noses. Punches way over its weight class without tearing up a lot of meat.

not to long ago i bought several rifles and sold all but one and ended up with a new ss kimber montana in 257 roberts for neer nothing that i put a new 4x leopold on with light weight tally rings, it comes in at a tad over 6 lbs. 117 sst,s with a heavy charge of imr 4350 it runs 2900 fps and shoots three from the bench into 2" at a honest 200 yards. but i will be the first to say, they are like mopeds and fat girls. fun to ride, but you don,t want your friends to see you.

Does my Win mod 94 in 25-35 count
It sure does. I’d like to get a .25//35 barrel for an encore rifle. I’ve always thought it would be a fun little round, especially with a spritzer shaped bullet.
Speaking of Encores, the .25/06 in a handgun is a terrific performer. It’s performance pretty much duplicates a .257 Roberts in a rifle.

You gotta own it Leslie. Fat girls need love too. Variety is the spice of life. I would say quarter bores are more like the skinny homely girls. ;)

@SteveNZ
What do you think of the 25 Souper (25/08), have you ever chronoed it
Bob
The gunsmith who built my .257 Bob also built my buddy's 25 Souper at the same time. That's because I had a donor LA and he had a donor SA. Made for the perfect storm of cussin' and discussin' of which was the better cartridge.

Out in the rockchuck fields and Pronghorn range land, even with us trading off between both rifles, all it proved was who the better shooter.

And no, I 'aint sayin'...

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
