Cartridges you just hate

I'm surprised most recently when I see .264 WM on the shelf of most gun shops I go into these days.
I would like to have a .264WM eventually, but it seems a larger bore rifle always seems to pop up and pique my interest. It's the "Siren's Song" syndrome, beckoning hapless big bore enthusiasts to the precipice of doom. LOL

Why bother with a .264 WM when they make a 6.5-300 Weatherby now???

Big Weatherby fanboy here...

You should have built a rifle in that wildcat cartridge in the mid ‘60s. You’d have been the only one in Georgia with one. LOL
That's from my 1971 Sierra reloading manual.

Plenty of ammo around now. Ditch the Manbun and get a proper .264 WINCHESTER MAGNUM! LOL
@CoElkHunter
The beauty of the 264 win mag is if'n y'all can't find brass just grab some horrible 338 mag brass and neck it down to a useful cartridge.

Bob,
I agree.

For my two cents, the only thing wrong with the .338 WM cartridge is that it can't hold enough powder to drive a larger bullet anywhere near the velocity that it should.

It suffering from the same anemia that some 35 caliber cartridges suffer from.

Just kidding, just kidding..... ;-)

Or, 7mm REMINGTON MAGNUM and .300 WINCHESTER MAGNUM necked down brass. AND, if you have a 6.5mm or .350 REMINGTON MAGNUM and need brass, you can cut down, resize and reshape the same brass to make those cases. .458 WINCHESTER MAGNUM cases necked down or .338 WINCHESTER MAGNUM cases necked up, creates the superb .416 TAYLOR cartridge case. The belted .375 HOLLAND and HOLLAND MAGNUM....... the case that keeps on giving life to many other formidable but forgotten cartridges.

Not even the .270 NITRO EXPRESS in a DR?
Well...I could make an exception to that. Any caliber followed by Nitro Express is good in my books lol

Here comes the most boring post on this thread. First off I can’t think of any cartridge that I hate. There are dozens however that I’m just not interested in. Mainly the European and Weatherby cartridges as well as anything developed after 1980 or so. All good but just hold no interest for me. To be honest I’m really not interested in the big bores either. Blasphemy, I know! But I can’t help it.
The ones that do it for me are the common cartridges from my childhood in the 1970s and teen years in the 1980s. I grew up on a farm by a small community in the Canadian prairies. Famous gun writers and hunters were unknown to me. The only hunting magazine that I knew of was the Western Sportsman which had articles submitted by Saskatchewan and Alberta contributors. So the only hunting influences in my life were my father, my friends fathers and other men from my very small hometown. Everyone of these men shot a combination of .308 (my all time, never be without), .270, .30-06, .243, .303, .30-30 and .300 Savage. In my late teens and early 20s I learned of a few more like the 7mmRM, .300 WM, 7mm-08, 35 Whelen, .358 Win and .35 Rem that found a place in my heart. And they are still the ones that I am a staunch supporter of.
But to hate any cartridge I think is really silly. Anybody still awake after reading this! Lol

I only hate calibers that I cant get ammo or supplies for to load, but its just because of my impatience.

I recently had a short lived (168 hour) hate for .450/400 NE 3 1/4” until I found dies and brass in Australia (Northern Shooters Supply). Now I like the round again, despite having never loaded or fired it.

Other than lack of availability, I love the regular ones and the weird ones. The stories behind the development of the round and its place in history generally intrigue me.

God bless the people who sell reloading dies and supplies with their unique caliber rifles, such as @AZDAVE and the .400 Whelen we traded :)
I can’t believe you got them to answer your needs. I can’t get a response out of them.

I’m not sure if you are serious or just messing with Bob lol But I’m sure you know the 338WinMag can push a 300gr as fast as a 375 H&H…
Bob will tell you a 35 Wheelcart can push a 500gr round as fast as 458 Lott

This boils down to where I started hunting and my observations in the field.

1. .270 - guys taking this into the bushveld messed this up for me.
2. Anything Weatherby apart from the 300.
3. 6.5 Creedmoor with target bullets. Berger, ELD-X, "ballistic tip" please leave this on the range.

I wanted to "hate" the 6.5 Manbun, but it became the only 6.5 I could find factory ammo for, so I ask Mrs. SD for one for Christmas a few year's ago.

(I already had rifles chambered in 6.5 Carcano, 6.5x55, and .260 Remington)

She bought me a Kimber 84M.

It could barely shoot 3 MOA...

Until I shot some of the most expensive factory ammo available, and wouldn't you know - it loved it!
( .75 MOA)

I killed a deer with it before Christmas, and there was, literally, not a single drop of blood to be found! Almost like it just died of a heart attack at the report. (good thing I made a good shot)

I couldn't even find the bullet hole, until it was at the processor and I felt around inside the ribcage.
That sounds just like the performance I got from a 243 before I traded it for a 250 savage.

Again this isn’t a hate feeling but I don’t get the point of cartridges with magnum names that aren’t magnum length. Don’t get me wrong the .338 Winchester magnum is a pretty good cartridge (I’ve owned a couple) but it’s amazing how close the .35 Whelen comes in performance with significantly less powder and a couple extra rounds in the magazine. Same goes for the 7mm Remington magnum (again had and hunted with one ) versus the .30-06 as the two give very similar results but the latter uses less powder and the rifle carries more ammunition. For my money if I want a magnum I’m getting a MAGNUM with a 3.6” cartridge overall length and a 26” barrel that can handle all bullet weights in its class with equal aplomb. Any need for a shorter lighter mountain rifle is nicely filled with a .30-06 or a .270 Winchester. On that note, I think folks largely misunderstand the point of the old .270; it has never been about utilizing heavy for caliber bullets. The whole point of the .270 is and has always been pushing a 130 grain bullet at 3,150 fps to give us a flat shooting light recoiling hard hitting option for deer and sheep hunting. Nothing more, nothing less.

As I've said to Steve Hornady several times “the 6.5 PRC is what the Creedmoor should have been”
Only value in the 6.5 Creedmoor was to allow me to have brass to wildcat to a 22 Creedmoor with an 8” twist to shoot 75+grain bullets which is fun but has become mainstream as a factory cartridge.
Almost 50yrs ago on a celebrity prairies dog shoot I got to spend 2 days with Jim Carmichael and Skeeter Skeleton and when asked what their favorite cartridges were Jim replied “what ever I’m shooting at the moment as shooting beats just about anything else you could be doing”. Skeeter replied “I love them all just like good Bourbon”
So I’ve lived 70yrs collecting guns and IF they are accurate I have trouble finding at least something in them to like!

I too find all the calibers I grew up have a special place for me. I think they simply take us back to a good time....
