Bob Nelson I sold my .243!

WOW!!!! hahaha
I see the title of this post very late!
But I laughed all the time while I was reading it!
Congratulations, the 7-08 are a great shot, but... I prefer the 308...
Did all the things you´re son did, but better...:ROFLMAO:(y)

Don’t worry, my .308 is still my #1 rifle!

I've owned a few .308 hunting rifles. Planning on keeping one in the safe as they are just a workhorse.
My 7mm-08 has never let me down. They punch above their weight so I reckon it gives the .308 a run for its money on performance at least.

Cris, there is the old and typical discussion about "mass vs speed"...
The 308 are mostly used with 150 gn... but, the best performance HUNTING are with 180 ...
If you shoot an animal with a 180 bullet at 2500 fps... he don´t understand which caliber you use hahaha
I might the advantage of the 7-08 are the lighter bullets , same as the 243...
But, for hunting, lighter bullets, mmmm.... i don´t like them!

I feel the same way about the 270 Win vs the 30-06. I think the 270 hit's as hard as the 30-06, shoots flatter and recoils less. The one big exception to that is when using 200g bullets in the 30-06 for the big bears.

It´s seem to be simply a feeling....
In facts, the 270 performance with 130 gn bullets, are great! But a 3006 with lighter bullets of 150 gns, are very much powerful!
The rest, are only a sensation, not more than this

Well I’m an official 7mm-08 fan now. Took this buck at 180 yards quartering to with my new Browning X-Bolt. Very happy with this combo. I’ve been griping because my better half has claimed my 7mm RM but now she can have it!!!

@Ragman
Ain't nought wrong with the 7mm-08.
It's to the 280 rem like the 308 is to the 30-06. For all practical purposes the 7mm-08 will do what the 280 will out to sensible ranges.
Bob

Well if you're gonna kill an elk at 688 yards you'll need to borrow it back.
I wouldn’t dream of shooting at an animal at that range with any caliber!

Well, not just ANY cartridge, a .243 WINCHESTER! With your 7mm REMINGTON MAGNUM, you'd be good out to say, 800+ yards? LOL Take a look @colorado's thread on the 688 yard shot on an elk with a .243. You'll never want to shoot again below 500+ yards. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Yes I saw that thread. I couldn’t hit a barn at that distance! And have no desire to try. At live animals anyway!

You are absolutely right. I didn’t choose well with my first wife but I hit the jackpot on my second try. I’m very blessed to have a life partner and best friend in her.

This is the mulie she shot with my 7mag.

And this is the biggest of the whitetails that she got with it.

And best of all as she loves to fish as much as I do. I’m a lucky guy!

You are a very lucky man .

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen the .243 is gone. I know your opinion but it was a good rifle for us. I initially bought it as a coyote rifle that my wife could use for deer when/if she decided to start hunting. She finally did start deer hunting in 2017 and for 3 seasons in a row she shot her whitetails with it like she’d been doing it all her life. Then in 2020 she decided to use my 7mm RM for her first mule deer hunt. She got her mulie with it as well as her next 3 whitetails and now says the 7 mag is her gun and I can have my .243 back! For myself, I’m the biggest .308 fan there is and also have loved the 7 mag since I bought one in my 20s. So naturally I’ve been obsessed now for a few years with the idea that a 7mm-08 would be the best of both worlds. Her claiming one of my two main hunting rifles finally pushed me to get one but that meant another gun must go and the .243 was the one. So a couple weeks ago I ordered a Browning X-Bolt Hunter that should be arriving any day now. I’m excited to try a new for me calibre even though the .243 served well.
Ragman, I think you’ll like the Browning XBolt, very smooth short rotation bolt, and nice adjustable trigger. Bought one for my Son (in .243) and very accurate, pleasure to carry too. I have the older ABolt in .270 and it’s also got a nice trigger, smooth push feed and sub MOA accurate. While I have taken several whitetail with my BLR .243, Caribou, and one Bear, I do feel it requires broadside or head on targets - I avoid any quartering away because I don’t trust I’ll get the penetration required. A .308 allows for margin-for-error.

@colorado
What did you have a slice of bread tied on the muzzle and when they started eating it you shot them
Ha ha ha ha ha
Not a big fan of the 270 either when a fast 25 will do everything it will.
Bob
Now Bob, there you go getting another “dig in” on the .270 and now making the claim that a “fast 25” will do everything a .270 will..."just not true, anymore then a Fast Wide Receiver can do everything a big Tightend can do —- Wide Receiver’s don’t Date Taylor Swift !!!

That's good because barns are a mongrel to skin and don't taste good.

@HankBuck
A fast 25 loaded with a 115,117 or 120gn at 3,300 fps will do everything at 270 will do with a 130gn at 3,100fps
Loaded with a 120gn A Frame or a 115gn TSX at 3,300fps it will still equal the 270 loaded with a 130gr mono.
I have seen your football and it has specialised players that if you take them out of their special area they are hopeless. Top that off with the fact you need 2 specialised teams aside (offensive and defensive) to play a game. Then you need 3 hours to play a one hour game with all the flapping around.
In Australia we like to keep it simple. Most players can play different positions if needed, we only need two teams to play the entire game and the game has 2 40 minute halves, so an 80 minute game. We have had American players and they can't handle the pace and don't see how we can take such a pounding without all the padding.

Nugget here. A guide gave me the nickname as I looked similar to Nugent at the time. Hunting for over 50 years yet I am new to hunting in another country and its inherent game species. I plan to do archery. I have not yet ruled out the long iron as a tag-along for a stalk. I am still deciding on a short list of game. Not a marksman but better than average with powder and string.
