i dunno, in my experience a gun that hurts you will always hurt you unless you do something to fix it. either add weight or restock it to fit you better. now your case may be special because of your injured shoulder.

in the case of my 450 NE, i will likely have it restocked to fit me better.

There's a 585 nyati on gunbroker for all you southpaws out there.

that gray one? if so, Matt tried to get me to buy it a couple of months ago! LOL

Thats what you call a real specialty item!!!! Talk about a limited market...l

Sadly they weren't interested in exporting the rifle, otherwise it would have a new home already :(

looks like my going to bring my friends 585 HE to the shoot in AK this weekend. i just need to decide how warm to load the cartridges. im thinking around 2250fps with a 750gr woodleigh has some good "oomf" without getting into the border line retina detaching recoil.

Matt,

If you decide to load the .585 "hot", the best eye specialist in Anchorage is Dr. Rosen and I know the way to his office, no problem (in case you experience a detached retina).

See you at the airport on Saturday.

oh your shooting it as well! the recoil isnt that bad... :E Crazy:

im going to use a load recommended by Mr. Hubel. its a 750gr Woodleigh over 155gr of W760, this should give a healthy 2300fps. the recoil will be heavy but your retinas should stay put.

-matt

we haven't chronographed any of the loads yet so I cant be sure. the one load we fired that was probably (guessing here) around 2450fps was an absolute brute and I don't think id ever want to shoot it again. the rifle we've been using weighs 17 pounds and even with all that weight the recoil was bad enough to give you a headache after a single shot.

now we didn't use a chronograph so I cant really tell you if 2400fps on the nose would be manageable. my advice is to work your way up to it slowly.

I have no interest whatsoever in firing a 750 gr bullet at 2300 fps but, I do look forward to watching you and others fire that thing.

Also, I have borrowed a 2.5 ton truck with hydraulic boom and chain hoist, to get your field piece out to the range and back.

In my late 30's I endured major shoulder surgery and I don't wish to repeat that experience now at age 62, not to mention the age risk factor as it pertains to a possible detached retina.

I generally do not load my rifles (even my scrawny little .375 H&H) up to factory specs, mostly because I am not fond of being kicked about any more than absolutely necessary.

You shoot that howitzer, I will watch.

i suppose i could load a cartridge to standard 577 NE specs for you. from a 17 pound gun these loads are very tame critters.

I appreciate the offer but a 17 pound .58 caliber rifle does not approximate anything I would use for my hunting activities, (loaded "down" to the old NE ballistics or not), in the relatively few "spry years" I may have left to hunt hard so, I really have no interest in firing it.

My puny little Heym .458 will be with us and that's going to be plenty for me on Saturday.

See you soon.

Matt, you have became a monster. When you get old, you will probably look like a bag of jelly walking down the street. Dog, if I were there I would keep you company by watching, but would never shoot these huge rifles that Matt just loves!

not feeling the love here. :E Cry:

i would NEVER hunt with my friends rifle. its 17 pounds and about 12 pounds of that is hanging off the muzzle. heck i can only shoulder the rifle for a second or two. but thats the way my friend wanted it and my own personal rifle isnt ready yet so im making due with what ive got access to.

my 505 Gibbs will be done on the 20th and my 585 HE is still a little ways out.

Some members might love you to pieces but, at least a couple of us are still not interested in firing any of your over-the-top shoulder cannons.

well scratch the idea of bringing the 585 HE, it wont fit in any of my travel cases.

I hate to show up empty handed again but it looks like im SOL. the 416 seems silly to bring and ive yet to get the 450 NE to regulate.

Hi Matt,

Don't worry about that amigo.
You are always welcome, rifle or no rifle.
I have a box of .458 you can share with me in my Heym (it may not kick hard enough for you though - LOL).
And if you want to buy (at home or here at Anchorage Cabela's, etc) any factory live .458 ammo, you are welcome to fire it through my best double (in other words, my only double teehee).
Other people's reloads would make me nervous in my hard earned double rifle but, factory ammo - fire away.

If I ever get Africa out of my blood, I probably will continue showing up at Cal's Double Rifle Shoots, rifle or no rifle.

Besides, when the shooters start to get hungry around noon, who can turn those burgers on the grill with such expertise as myself ? - LOL.

So, bring a rifle or some factory ammo for mine or bring nothing at all and everyone will all be happy to see you again either way.

You mentioned that your .450 NE barrels are being resistant to regulation.
As I recall, you bought it from Mike ("AKMike").
He has the regulating load for it no doubt.
If it is the one he had built on a JP Sauer 12 gauge frame, then I have fired that rifle and it was very well regulated.
Unfortunately Mike is unable to attend this shoot, due to his work load but, I can PM his phone number to you, if you want it.

Cheerio,
Paul.

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
