New cars and pickup trucks are some of the poorest "buys" in our economy. Looking at the price of a washer and drier, for equal features and options, they are cheaper than they were 30 years ago. Yes cars are way better than they were 30 years ago and are loaded with new comfort and safety features... But the prices are astronomically higher! The cost of manufacturing a car is about half of what they sell it for. The rest goes towards advertising, sales commissions, bonus', etc. and then on top of it, a couple companies have been so miss-managed they needed government bailouts!
And don't get me going on the lease schemes! I spent a considerable part of an afternoon negotiating with the new salesman/just out of college/son of the dealership's owner and when we finally had a deal worked out.. He pulled out the "plan" (read;scheme) and tried to talk me into a lease... I brought in my laptop and the amortizations of a loan were such a better deal it was a no brainer... So when I pressed him on why he had insisted the lease was the only way to go... His answer was that "well you figured the loan off the price we negotiated, when we do a lease it is off this number in fine print here on the corner of the invoice". WTF Why had we spent all the time negotiating a price to have it revert back to a "plan" price that was higher than the original full list?! Buyer beware
I applaud anyone getting as much as they can out of their cars and not falling into the "new paint" trap.
