Best hunting movies Africa or otherwise

@Cooposo - I was disappointed in “The Revenant”, too many obvious Computer-Generated-Images AND they fabricated the “true” parts of the story…the entire event really took place during the Summer months but I guess surviving a Grizzly attack wasn’t exciting enough for Hollywood - so they added Winter/Snow. They also Cut-the-barrel-length on the rifles used because the Director didn’t like the Look of the long barrels that were used actually during that time period. Lastly, all those scenes where they crossed rivers in below zero temps and got soaking wet, —- no Mountain Men or backwoods Men opted to cross a river in Below zero temps —- they knew they’d die. I think the movie “Jeremiah Johnson” with Robert Redford was a more accurate depiction of 1800s Mountain Men (except for all the Indian fight/killing scenes)….Just my opinion
Yea I read the Revenant and liked it. The movie even took liberties with the book IIRC. Of course modern day Hollywood had to make up a mixed race son and associated drama

No Country for Old Men (2007)-IMDB Synopsis- Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong and over two million dollars in cash near the Rio Grande.

That movie is one wild ride and all starts out with a pronghorn hunt. The whole rest of the movie is a hunt…but just a manhunt. I absolutely love the movie. My brother hates it. Tommy Lee Jones in the closing scene…I’m probably in a small minority that grew up riding the range on horses, and hunting, and chasing cows with my dad. But the last 30 seconds of the movie hit me hard.

Excellent movie

Very valid opinions! I didn’t love the movie either. No doubt that Jeremiah Johnson is a better movie from top to bottom. The Revenant is not a great movie by any stretch. But it’s ok and I thought it worth mentioning in this thread. I guess I mention it cause it could scratch a certain itch, and it was cool to see any such movie made in 2015.

I guess I overlooked bison hunting in Dances With Wolves too! Should have mentioned that.

@Cooposo - AGREE and you make very good points

I recently watched The Macomber Affaire and really enjoyed it. I would like use to the collective knowledge of AH to ask the fellow members what great movies are made with hunting as a theme. Africa or otherwise.
how did you get it please

That is quite a while ago now. I honestly don't know. Think I saw the movie on one of the video platforms like YouTube.

Quick search now leads me to Amazon who sells the DVD.

In the Blood is a very good safari movie. It’s about Theodore Roosevelt IV and his son on safari in Moyowasi with one of Teddy Rosevelt’s old rifles. Excellent cinematography and soundtrack.
Indeed YouTube is a better source of African video content than the main broadcasters these days

Yesterday we had a temporary problem with the Wi-Fi so no internet.

So watched King Solomon Mines with Stewart Granger. In the beginning there is actual footage of an elephant getting a frontal brain shot during a hunt.

Besides that it was a fairly mediocre film.

In the "otherwise" category I would like to submit "The Biskit Eater". The B&W original. A really oldie but a goodie.

Here's a couple that I have seen but they weren't mentioned in this thread...

White Hunter Black Heart - Clint Eastwood
The Hunter - Willem Dafoe
Spirit of a Sheep Hunter - Youtube - Billy Molls
The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot...Sam Elliot
Troll Hunter - Norwegian found footage

Listen, you Balkan rug peddler. . .
. . .my role of the great hunter,

as you put it, is my own business.

It has nothing to do with you.

It's a sacred subject.

Much like the sex life of my mother.

It's something you'll refrain from talking

about or even thinking about.

It's way too difficult a subject

for your small little brain to grasp.

It's a passion that's beyond you.

I'd have to explain to you the sound

of the wind and the smell of the woods.

I'd have to create you

all over again. . .

. . .and stamp out those years you spent

on the dirty pavement in cramped shoes.

The Juno and the troll movie were good
But I thought they were more si-fi
I especially liked them blaming bear and getting the wrong bear in the troll one

Yes, and what looked like too high a frontal brain shot....in actuality WAS too high. The bull got up later, ran off and was not found! I think someone got hurt in that movie, little rusty on details.

Woow didn't know that. How crazy how times changed.

Haha - me too. I was being a little tongue-in-cheek with my list. The Troll Hunter was almost a comedy but it does portray hunters and not in a terribly bad light. The Clint Eastwood movie is 100% Africa but horribly frustrating.

I should have included "Savannah" which is 100% about duck hunting but, even though I'm primarily a duck hunter, I didn't find the movie particularly appealing. Like all movies that portray a hunting component, it's not quite right but only hunters will really notice.

@jeanes - WOW I thought I was the only person that ever saw (and remembers) that 1940 movie. I watched it as a boy on TV in the 1960s and thought it was GREAT, made me want to Hunt Quail. I never saw the 1970s remake but will take a guess “it sucked”? I want to thank you for your Post because I had always thought the title of that movie was “The Promise” ——no wonder I can’t seem to find information about it. A really Great movie, somewhat “Disney like” but more realistic and accurately portrays pointing dog Field Trials in the 1940s.
