Well . . . I might want to hunt something endangered but I'd have to have the permits. For example, in 2014 I hunted scimitar horned oryx, which is "extinct in the wild" (per IUCN). But there are ranchers in South Africa who are raising the animals, and if hunters won't take the surplus, the costs of keeping them around might not be justified. And that could lead to extinction everywhere. As long as we can keep the animals breeding, and reasonable genetic diversity, then bunting such animals is a way of preserving them.
