Allure of the Ruger No1

The vx freedom has even more eye relief.

They keep multiplying:

My old stand-by, the .375 H&H, and his new little brother, the .45-70.
Now, to properly scope the lad- any suggestions from my fellow No 1 guys?
FYI- it'll be used primarily in the deer woods with 100 yard shots being the max.
Regards,
Goopy
Enjoy, but be warned all the fudds swear that the .45-70 really kicks like a mule. :E Lol:When you ask them if they have fired a tropical model, they say, "A what?"

Until about a year ago, I had never owned a Ruger No 1. I decided to buy a couple of them in 243 for my grandsons. Just this week, I bought a 7x57 and a new in box, 6.5x55, which has some really nice wood. Hope to mount a scope and get it to the range soon.

That's a beautiful pair of No.1s. The one on the right has a beautiful stock. Congrats! Did you buy them locally, or on GB?

Most of my purchases are from Gunbroker or Gunsinternational.

Have just welcomed another No. 1 to the family. A .458 Win Mag, I had re-chambered to .450 Nitro Express 3 1/4", that will do double duty as .450 Black Powder Express.

As a right-handed person who prefers to shoot left because of my less-than-perfect right eye, I'm a big fan of the Ruger No. 1 simply because I can shoot it equally well off of either shoulder. I like its simplicity & its ambidextrous design.

Very Well Done, Odonata- a No 1 in the deer stand; Good Hunting, Sir!
Thanks! I already have one from archery season so this fall is off to a good start.

Next comes primitive season but Mississippi discriminates against my Ruger No. 1's by requiring an exposed hammer so I will have to settle for a Browning 1885 for a few weeks due to regulations:

They are indeed the perfect deer blind rifle!

Agreed! A lot of my fall & early winter is spent up a tree or in a box with a Ruger No. 1:

The Leupold 3x20mm Big Bore in this photo has since been moved to my 458 Win Mag.

I've got a Fuji GSW680 III loaded with Kodak 120 TMax 400 B&W film in case I get lucky with my 303 British.

You may find that the short barrel won't really be best for black powder loads - fun to shoot at night though!
I had a 458 Lott No.1 which I used as a mule for all sorts of loads. Black powder - cast & paper patched up to modern smokeless loads.
I also used it for testing my swaged bullets.
All good fun and 100% reliable.

Hate that the Great State of Mississippi would discriminate against a good ole rifle like the No 1….
I’m gonna take my No 1 (.45-70) for some deer hunting in Southern Illinois. I’ll make sure to send pics from the stand.
Keep up the thread, Fellas!

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
