Allure of the Ruger No1

I was just on a hunt with @BC Tal, each of us had a Ruger no.1 as a DG Gun. Mine in 500 NE, and his in 416 Rigby. Two buffalo and a sable were taken with the No.1's. I have nothing but respect for the rifles and own 5 of them:
(7x57, 300 h&h, 9.3x74r, 450/400 NE, 500 NE)

Here is the 500NE with the first game we took on the trip. We had been following up Buff tracks when we chanced upon some sable with a nice bull in the pack. my plains game rifle and ammo was in the truck. So I used the 500, penetration was.... more than adequate...

Beautiful! What I really like is that you haven't messed with them.

Beautiful sable, beautiful rifle. In fact very beautiful both.

You’ve got a proper stock and barrel on that rifle! The No 1 has a well deserved reputation for excessive recoil in large calibers. You’ve addressed the two design flaws that cause this in the big hitters.

I was lucky on the barrel, as a friend of mine is the GM of IBI barrels, so he spun me a custom 26" 500NE barrel. I made the stock specifically to have a larger butt area for the recoil, and made the rear bolt recess large enough that I could slide a recoil reducer into it. The stock took about 3 days to make both the fore and rear. So recoil on it is pretty reasonable all things considering.

I also had the barrel threaded, so I can run a break when I am doing load dev on the bench.

I have to jump in on this one as I am waiting for my first No. 1 to arrive. Purchased a 416 Rem Mag from another member here. I fell in love with this rifle when I saw one at a gun store a few years ago. I did a lot of elk hunting in Western Washington and used a Ruger Scout Rifle. Being a lefty I am always restricted in choices so Ruger is a great choice. I love my scout rifle because of the compact feel of the gun with it's 18' barrel. The No.1 feels the same way. Short even though it has a 24 inch barrel. Exceptional swing and pointable. Great in the hands and the simplest action to use ever made. Can't wait for it to get here this week. Already have 80 rounds ready to bust my shoulder. It is range time!

By the way, being new to AH it took me three days to read this string. You gotta break it up a little guys!

I can’t help myself, I’m going to bore you guys and post another pic of my .275. I grabbed it and went down to the range yesterday. I shot one three shot group at 100 yards standing with sticks, using RJ Renner’s ghost ring sight (MorVue). Its is truly an outstanding sighting system! Have I mentioned that I’m loving this rifle?

Hey WAB-
Could you please post a closer shot of that RJ Renner ring? I’m really digging that…

I have a NECG sight on one of my No. 1s. It looks exactly like the sight shown below, right. The NECG sight connects to the rear receiver bridge.

The Renner "MorVue" sight replaces the Ruger fold down sight.

My question to @WAB is if you install the Renner MorVue, then you can't install a scope unless you remove the MorVue sight or use tall rings.

That is actually what Roger believed. However, I got out my calipers and determined that if he made the sight slightly lower it would clear a scope mounted in Warne medium QD rings.

I put a slightly lower front sight (NECG) on to ensure good clearance when the MorVue was adjusted to target at 100. I believe that I have the best sighting system you could possibly come up with for this rifle. I am anal about triggers (this rifle has a jard) and sights, particularly scope positioning. I believe that a rifle should come up like a shotgun, in perfect alignment. I will not use a rifle with which I have to hunt for the sight picture.

I am going to shoot you a message. I have Roger's MorVue sight sitting waiting for some time on my end to install. I am actually curious what NECG front sight you went with.

Roger was of the same mindset, sight wouldn't fit. It's nice to see it does. That with the quick release scope mounts is a heck of a setup.

Who did the Jard trigger on yours?

My buddy and I did it. We’ve done two. One was easy, this one was a total pain in the ass. We got it done but I don’t think I’d tackle it again.

Yeah, I had a bit of a battle stripping the gun down and cleaning. They seem not that complicated...until you take them apart.

I almost lost the small spring that applies tension to the side of the receiver. It went flying when I was trying to reassemble.

Definitely an interesting gun to disassemble and reassemble.

I saw this mount for sale and thought someone here may appreciate having it:

There are also some 1” rings that I believe would work with it:

They keep multiplying:

My old stand-by, the .375 H&H, and his new little brother, the .45-70.
Now, to properly scope the lad- any suggestions from my fellow No 1 guys?
FYI- it'll be used primarily in the deer woods with 100 yard shots being the max.
Regards,
Goopy

Don’t know your budget but the Z6 1-6x24 EE would be perfect on that rifle. As you know, scope positioning and eye relief are a challenge with No 1’s. This solves it.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
