Allure of the Ruger No1

Here is my new No1 30-06 wearing the Swarovski 1-6i EE that Doug and Jeff brought out together with the requisite Warne QD rings. Thanks Jeff and Doug! Now the wait for the export permit begins.

Well done Kevin! I believe that you will be very happy with that setup. Any chance you can shoot it while your down there?

Hi WAB, no chance, it has to exit the moment it is licensed. But I will make up for it in Zim.

I recently picked up my Ruger No 1 from the 'smith and thought I'd try and get a decent picture of the beast. It took two very nice Tanzania buffalo last October. All custom and chambered in 500 Sharps 2 1/2" (50-90 Sharps) it's a brute.

Beautifully done!

Spectacular. I love the dark wood.
The rifle as it came to me is 1984 vintage Tropical in 458WM. I bought it as a project rifle; only wanted the receiver and guts. The plans were to replace the wood with Turkish Walnut but when I saw what was on it the decision was easy, keep the original.

Well, my Boddington 300 H&H disappointed me yesterday after work. Was going to take it cat hunting in the evening but needed to zero first. The factory irons grouped about 1 foot left and nearly 2 feet low at 100 yards

I was able to drift the rear sight to center the POI but will need a lower front sight, taller rear sight or both to get this thing hitting where I want it. 180 grain Nosler Accubond factory ammo. Recoil is easy and rifle looks great it won't be hunting cats until the kinks are ironed out.

How much front sight is there to work with?

I will have to get back to you on that, haven't had a chance to check with my micrometer. I did just get off the phone with Ruger CS and they are sending me a shorter front sight and taller rear. This rifle from the factory comes with their mid height front and rear so they had one higher/lower for each. Somewhere in that combo I should be able to get it dialed. Otherwise, I will crunch some numbers and order a more specific front height from NECG to correct the issue.

Edit: I do not use a 6 o'clock hold either. White bead sitting in V, and centered on intended POI. shot another group at 25 yards to confirm change after drifting sight and left to right is good but still several inches low at 25 when should be high at that range.

Well, after letting it sit in the safe for a number of years I got my #1 in 270 Weatherby mag out and put a scope on her. And thanks to Rob404 I have some dies, bullets and cases to start the loading process

The scope is a Leopold VX2 3-9x40 so it may change. I'm planning on using it on pronghorn in Wyoming in the next couple of years.

I bought this 45-70 Gov't as new several months ago for black bear hunting in the North Eastern United States. Not sure I want to shoot a bear, but I had to have this gun just in case!
;-) Something about these No. 1's that I just never get tired of looking at them...

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
