Allure of the Ruger No1

I see that you have your scope set way back on the bolt rifle which is curious. Looks like a Leupold scope. The reason I'm asking is that the RSM is a magnum action, the "African" is not; i may have an issue that I wasn't aware of.
That's an older Leupold VX2 1-4X. It's a pretty short scope and where it is it's about 4.5 inches of eye relief for me, which is it's far limit. So, from my little experience it will depend on what scope you're putting on your RSM. A longer scope, or one with more eye relief and/or offset bases should take care of things.

I had no idea H&H used a Ruger No 1 action. Probably a one-off but sure looks nice.

Beautiful, but at just shy of 8 pounds, that's going to smart when you fire it.

If I ever get the chance I will buy one of these. Too special to pass up.

It is a 500 Sharps 2 1/2" (50-90 Sharps), think of i as a shortened NE 3". It's loaded to 500 NE performance or a tad better.
Excellent! I too want to take advantage of the thicker rim and build a boomer off the .50 basic 3¼". I was almost drawn in by the .495 A Square a while ago as it was just a neat idea being labelled sub fifty but being over. Alas it's a belted cartridge and uses somewhat tough to find brass.

Yes, I understand the draw, I was thinking a 3 1/4" also but in the end I decided to go with the 50-90 Sharps largely because of historical reasons and with smokeless powder there really was no reason. The 2 1/2" case holds 116gr H2O and as I said it is not difficult to achieve 500 NE ballistics; if interested I'll share the load used for my cape buffalo. It is an eyeopener to shoot.

Both the Sharps 50 and the 500 NE are black powder cartridges, using smokeless changes the game. Historically the 3 1/4" was never used for bison or much of anything else, while the 50-90 is the round specifically developed for bison hunting in 1872 and was largely responsible for decimating the herds. I took my last bison with a 625gr paper patch bullet; it collapsed with a bullet between the eyes. The skull was destroyed but got the meat.

You obviously have been looking into this since you mentioned the thicker rim on the 50 basic compared to the NE. That was another reason that I went the route I did.

Please a bit more about this beauty. WOW!!!
Sure! I bought it last year. I was looking for a NIB Number 1 in 300 H&H. Amazingly, I found one. I bought a semi-inlet stock set and did the finishing myself. I’m really happy with how well it turned out. I finished it off with a New England Custom Gun recoil pad in red (of course.) It shoots 180 grain Barnes Tipped Triple Shocks into 1 inch groups or less. I’m as pleased with this gun as any in the safe. Hopefully, that dog will hunt. I’ll know soon.

You did a fantastic job. she sure is beautiful. :giggle:

OK, I’d like to hear how folks have solved the scope positioning challenge presented by No1’s. Most No1’s I have handled require the shooter to crawl the stock to get a proper sight picture.

The best solution I have found is the Swarovski Z6 1-6x24 EE. The straight tube and long eye relief allow for perfect alignment. This is the scope I have mounted on my .275.

The Leupold VX3 lineup also have good eye relief, albeit not as good as the Z6 EE, and a definite step down in quality.

WAB, that is the one design aspect of the #1 that bothers me. The scope mounting bridge looks great, without a scope mounted! It simply positions the scope too far forward. I’ve been able to partially address this by using a thin recoil pad and a scope with good eye relief. I must still mount the gun and creep the scope a bit, but not too much. The only other solution is offset mounts which I find unattractive.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)
