A Surgeon Among Client Shikaris

I’ve used a Remington 700 since the early 1970s. I cannot remember ever having a jam nor safety issue. The CRF of the Mauser design preferred by most for DG is primarily for extraction and because it will pick up the next cartridge “controlled”.
My Winny 70 in 30-06 failed firing on an antelope hunt twice in a row. I discovered in the windy conditions some how as I was inserting the first round, a blade of grass got into the bolt between the firing pin and cartridge primer. It failed the first round, then I inserted a second without checking and it failed firing a second time. I ejected the cartridge and took the time to look at the bolt where I discovered the blade of grass.
Every rifle as well as bullet can fail under the right conditions. JMO&E

Excellent assessment. In my life , l have only seen two model 700 rifles out of two dozen , which had a failure to extract a cartridge . The others were flawless in their performance. I should add here that they were both the magnum .375 calibre .
Hopefully , Shootist43 will soon help us expand on a real safety issue based on field experience.
I have also seen a model 70 rifle from Winchester have an extraction problem. But that was a model without the mauser type extracting claw device . After cleaning the gun , it functioned spotlessly.

A Remington M700 ?!
Mr. Rahman , no offense , but those guns suck big time ! :( They have a nasty reputation for going off on their own :(
You guys were really lucky that the gun didn't accidentally go off and hit a tracker or coolie or something :(
And Remington M700s jam like crazy

Hoss, I will respectfully disagree, or putting it in more sensitive way, I will partially agree.
Remington 700, to my knwledge recently had an issue with trigger systems, and had a public recall based on very few legal cases when gun accientally and allegedely went off. (causing injuries or fatalities).

However, I beleive that the fault of newer trigger has never been proved although compensation may have been paid.

However, this was only noted in last couple of years, not in the time 62-72, when mr Rahman was guiding clients, to Indian safari. It was actually the time when remmington gained reputation, and winchester was loosing with post 64 m70 model.

On the other hand - Rem. 700 has replaced winchester 70 as sniper rifle in vietnam, has gained solid reputation ever since, being a basis for sniper rifle still in use (sws m24). It simply cannot be jamming unreliable rifle.

I have tried sps model, (new), and is OK. Accuracy was below one minute, with ballistic tip ammo. (cloverfleaf printing on target, 100 mtrs) However the model I tried has very heavy trigger pull, possibly due to before mentioned law suits, so they are relaesing new heavy pull trigger now to avoid... hmmm... possible problems... new trigger might as well be designed by lawyers.

I think that there are still "three sevens" that rule american middle class market even today: remington 700, winchester 70, and ruger 77. I beleive the reputiation is not without grounds.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this to us all . It is all becoming clear now. So there was a problem at one point in time and it got repaired as l understand it. I personally favor the model 70 from Winchester with the mauser type extracting claw device , however l have healthy respect for the model 700 from Remington.

Kawshik, here are a couple of articles regarding the Remington model 700's safety issues. I myself have never had a problem. That being said, I am mindful of the possibility.

On another topic, I'm sure there is a story waiting to be told about your late fiancé killing a panther with a shotgun.

Thank you so much for helping me clear my confusion. This makes excellent reading material for tonight. I have confidence already that by reading it , l myself will get concerned about the safety issues in the model 700 rifles.
Regarding Antora killing the panther , it is emotionally a little difficult to write about her as her death was not swift.
However , you are right. It is the best way to keep her memories alive. I will do it.

Thank you so much for your kind words and appreciation. Yes , l have posted 11 or 12 other stories here and will hopefully post more ( another is currently being completed by myself , as we speak ).

Thank you for another wonderful story, Sir. My Dad has killed several good buffalo wild his Remington 700 Sendero 7mm STW.

Thank you so much for for your kind words . May l ask a most naive question ? What does STW stand for ?

Dear mr Rahman,
STW - "shooting time westerner"

Earopean nomenclature is caliber x casing lenght such as 9,3x62...

On the other hand, there is no rule in naming modern (american) calibers. So names of calibers are frequently given as per maker, probably having considered commercial marketing and advertising. Modern cartridge, should sound good and appealing with its name on the market...

In this case 7 mm STW is 8 mm remington casing, necked down (reduced neck size) to 7 mm, to accept a bullet of 0,284 mm diam.

Shooting Times Westerner. I believe Shooting Times was an American firearms publication, and some people who worked for it developed a cartridge called the Westerner for the long distances shots are taken in the American West.

Thank you so much for educating me on this matter.

Great story, Mr. Rahman !

Regarding the Remington 700, I use a Mountain Model for hunting Roebuck without any issues.

Thank you so much for your kind words and support. It is good to know that your model 700 rifle gives you excellent service.

Kawshik a 7mm STW is to a 7mm Mag, what the 7 mm Mag was to a 7 x 57.
Shootist43
Thank you so much for explaining to me in such a simplified manner. I understand then , that 7 millimeter STW is a more powerful variant of the 7 millimeter cartridge.

We all set off early in the morning . Our party comprised of myself , our respected client , Rishi , Jeddiah and three coolies. I carried my old Ishapore Arms Factory 12 bore side by side shot-gun , loaded with SG cartridges in each barrel . Rishi carried my respected client’s 12 bore Remington pump operation shot-gun . The coolies carried a folding wooden chair and refreshments for our respected client. Our client was wearing a cartridge belt on his waist , full of 12 bore number 6 cartridges . When we reached the haunts of the chukars near the Kudai hills , we were all pleased at the sight of that beautiful place. A large number of birds were abundant in this area . Rishi handed the 12 bore Remington pump operation shot-gun to our client. In half an hour , the shooting had commenced . I must say. I have never seen a gentleman with such a Godly level of skills with fire arms in my 77 years of age. Why , he did not miss a single shot ! With eighteen cartridges , he had laid low eighteen chukars. In my entire life , l have never seen anyone ( even my good friend , Captain Newaz who is celebrated by Bangladesh Shooting Federation as being Bangladesh’s best living bird shooter ) shoot with this degree of success . Why is more astonishing is that he had accomplished this feat in less than ten minutes , which means that he was securing two birds in roughly every minute. In all probability , he would have kept dropping more Chukars if his cartridge belt did not get empty. I made the coolies recover the corpses of the Chukars , while l picked up all of the client’s expended 12 bore plastic cartridge cases. These would be lovely for me to reload , with wax treated SG pellets .

American pump operation shot-guns and Indian Chukars are a good combination , evidently .

Are my dear readers not yet convinced of this gentleman’s shooting proficiency ?
Let us now go to the part of this account which deals with the boar Shikar.
Thanks for your report. Did the Dr. have a poly choke device on this shotgun?
