Black Bear/Sea Otter Trapper Style Hat for sitting in deer stands or styling in town

My first concern was it can be used for “Styling in town” wear that around here and you might be considered eccentric.

Just joking, but I think it’s like when in Rome, it might look the part there but it would be akin tho wearing Tweeds or a German hunters hat on a hunt in Australia it would look good where it is traditional wear.

Better stick to a Flanny if you come here to shoot Roo’s. That hat would keep you warm on the coldest of nights in the paddock but most stick with a cheap Beanie.

As for Kangaroos and vermin.

Kangaroos are protected but are a sustainable resource and the stupid pr!cos banning the use of the hide should come to realise the same number of Roos are harvested for meat and a large number of skins are discarded because the processors can’t sell enough so it reduces the value of the animal to the licensed professional shooter and the supply chain.

As for being vermin, they are widespread and plentiful but only harvested on quota. I’m good with that but I don’t know how you can calculate the number that would be struck, injured or killed by vehicle collisions daily. Or the economic impacts of this.

Is there a specific sub species of seal critter you’re referring to, perhaps with a particularly unique fur pattern (rings, spots, ribbon, etc.) ?

30-something years ago, (for $75. USA Dollars), I had bought a vest made from ringed seal, off a man who had moved from northern Alaska down into Anchorage, where I live.
While wearing it at my table during a gun show, some other fellow kept stopping by and bugging me to sell it to him.
Finally I caved in at over 3 times what I had paid only a few short years prior.
I suppose now that, I should’ve never fallen prey to his rising offers.
But, hindsight is always 20-20 so, oh well.

Anyway, all wildlife is fascinating to me and so out of curiosity, I Googled “Saskatchewan Seal”, hoping to be treated to a marine mammal new to my wrinkled up old brain.
But instead, what I got was as shown in my below attached photo.

Anyway, your comment: “if this hat was left handed, I’d be all over it”, is a center hit that made me chuckle, since it is such a common reply to various posts listing a rifle for sale.

I apologize if my comment about the kangaroo being viewed as vermin in some farming regions of Australia seemed like I was quoting Aussie Law.
What I referred to was the mindset of my former girlfriend’s farming family and according to her, many other farmers mindsets, where said species can be real crop wreckers.

Maybe the frustrated farmers shot scores of them unlawfully or maybe, they had to apply for culling permits, I don’t know.
She didn’t say.

A possible comparison:
Prior to my escape from Occupied California, (42 years ago), The State, (possibly The USA Federal Government as well), classified a particular crop raiding bird, known as a “Coot” or “Mudhen”, as a migratory game bird.
The grain farmers regarded coots as vermin.
The coots were as I recall especially fond of the young sprouting shoots of winter wheat crops.
Said farmers would apply for permits to shoot these birds by the ute load and invite people out for a “coot shoot”.

Often, ammunition, sandwiches and hot coffee were provided.
I was blessed to participate in coot shoots now and again.
It was great fun but most of the birds were only used as fertilizer.
That always seemed a shame to me because, coots although strong of flavor nonetheless, the filets make decent jerky.
I’ve also eaten tolerable good enough coot stew, back in those days.

I verified with him that it is LAWFUL for anyone to sell a native handicraft containing sea otter fur, WITHIN the US, once it is purchased after the raw material is significantly altered and qualify as authentic Native handicrafts.
