9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

Ive been hunting Africa and the NA continent for many many years and much of that with the 9,3x62 and I doubt that any one could tell the difference in killng effect between the 375 H&H and the 9,3x62. I settled on RL-16 and RL-17..
Well if you read one of my earlier post there is some one that does. He also retrieves the bullet if it stays in the animal and checks out the wound channel. Fairly thorough sort of bloke. Does not hang shit or talk the 9.3X62 down.

I think you replied to the wrong post.

Could you perhaps link to that earlier post, I can see you have more than a 1,000 post, a bit much for me to start reading:-)

Go back to Post 340 in this thread, 28/12/23. Not technically minded so no idea how to link posts

Thanks a lot, hadn't realised it was in this thread, my mistake
No, my stuff up not referring to the post properly. I live and learn. The wife says there may be hope for me yet, but she ain't holding her breath :LOL:

I tested both on the chronograph with a number of loads and the 375 won every time but only by about 100 to a 150 fps and the doesn't mean spit IMO opinion but on Buffalo, Hippo I defy anyone to tell the difference in killing effect or reaction, same as to the 9,3x64 vs the 9,3x62..As a result of those test the difference I found the 9,3x62 was more Plesant to shoot as to recoil, less noise it seemed to me, lighter weight rifle, Just a bit nicer than my 375H&H or y 375 Ruger..Its a matter of choice and that can go either way as one can see on these posts, If I need more than a 9,362 I will opt for my 404. Im very pleased with my 9,3x62s.

Somebody skipped physics...

9.3X62 = 78.2 grains H20, great cartridge
.375 H&H = 95.0 grains H20, GREATER CARTRIDGE... and all the mental gymnastics you care to do, will NOT change that.
@hoytcanon
But maths of powder capacity doesn't tell the whole story.
The 9.3x62 built its reputation with a 280gn at moderate velocity that killed DG very nicely.
The 320grain 9.3x62 will out penetrate the 375H&H with a 300gr. It needs a 350gn to match the SD.
With the 320grain in the 9.3x62 it will kill ALL the DG just as dead as the 375H&H and do it in a lighter rifle and less recoil.
Yes the 375H&H has a bit more horsepower but not that much.
I doubt any game hit with either the 9.3x62 or the 375H&H would notice any difference between the 2.

These last few post are what I meant by mental gymnastics... everyone uses examples whereby they maximize the parameters for the 9.3X62 and minimize the parameters for the .375 H&H... I have seen this play out countless times and I firmly believe that it is rooted in a fear of recoil... those with that little voice in the back of their heads that tells them "this is gonna hurt," when they squeeze a trigger are always the champions of the lesser recoiling cartridge. If you equalize the parameters as much as is conceivably possible, the capacity of the H&H stomps the X62. Some folks need to get off kale and eat a pot roast.

I own both, and also the 9.3x57 I load to pre-1930 9,3x62 velocities.

I like all of them, but the .375 H/H has the greatest recoil.

As for performance, on game, I can't see any difference, tho the greater velocity of the .375 H/H offers slightly flatter trajectories in my gun over my shorter barreled 9.3x62.

As for performance at common game shooting ranges, I see no difference.

Robertson claims he has seen superior performance from the x62 on buffalo and down loads his .375 to meet 9.3x62 specs.

i also own them all... and many, many other rifles, and I reload for them all... I am not biased one way or the other. No offense, but Robertson's claim is nonsense... given bullets of equal construction and/or bullets which are appropriately constructed for the speed at which they are propelled, the faster bullet always wins. This is not a question of the effects on game, I highly doubt with a 100 broadside lung shots you could effectively tell the difference between a .375 H&H and a 7 Rem Mag with a bonded 160 bullet. If one does a legitimate apples to apples comparison, the H&H will carry more speed and energy than the X62. This is no knock on the 9.3X62, I have one in a Ruger African, I also have a No.1 in 9.3X74R, and an RSM in .375 H&H, and an African in .375 Ruger and a whack more. I love guns of all sizes, I love load development, I love hours spent at the range, banging lead through the chrono and into the berms. But facts are facts... why does one need to measure up to the other? They each have their own unique and desirable attributes.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
