9.3x62 where is it not legal?

I have read several times where 40 cal was chosen, was that wrong?
In Kenya, it is .375 for eland and lion and cape buffalo. For elephant, rhino & hippo… it was .40. I hunted there in ‘74.

The ideal way to ascertain if the 9,3 is legal where you intend to go is to call the PH or Outfitter you are going with and ask them. Every ph I’ve spoken with in RSA says the 9,3 is acceptable for buffalo. Haven’t inquired as to any of the other DG specie.

The requirements per country have been posted on AH a few times, maybe Jerome has them available to post again? Asking your PH is not bullet proof, some don't know, and that is a fact. I had a PH in Zim pitch up with a 9.3x62 on a buff hunt. It is not legal in Zim where the energy falls short of 5200j. Things fall apart when there is an accident, unfortunately. Will a few thou of calibre or some hundred joules make a difference? Probably not, but you must make the decision or take the chance in the full knowledge of the facts so that you are not unwittingly dropped in it, so to speak.

Hmm ...

I've been handloading 300 gr. A-Frames to 5300J in the 9.3 Mauser without issue. Recoil? It's up there in a light rifle, but hey - there's no free lunch in most endeavors' ...

I can see how it's difficult to claim meeting minimum ME using factory ammo however...

I wanted to build one for my niece, my PH in SA said NOT legal for DG.

It also depends on which province or game management area, Private or Government concession.

Some areas in SA it is only a recommendation not a legal requirement .

I thought Don Heath had the 9.3X62 cleared or upgraded for Cape Buffalo in Zimbabwe ?
He stopped a charging Bull Elephant with the 9.3x62 once & knew it was plenty with a cool handed operator !

There is another thing requirements & game laws can change, both ways yearly or seasonally .

Obviously you can't use a Cap Gun in Kenya in this day & age !!

As I said I could be wrong....but the 375 was/ is the general min in most countries for quite a while...prior could have been min 40 cal...maybe a Kenya thing...but as I said probably wrong....

I am trawling the acts of various countries: Botswana 375 minimum cal for DG, no energy stipulation. Interestingly maximum allowed is 577. Minimum other than DG is 0.222. Military calibres like .308 and 303 are not allowed.

The max of 577 is interesting. Sadly counts out the grand old 600 NE

The no military calibers is an interesting one. I never even thought of that being an issue.

Wouldn’t mean 3006, 7x57 or 8x57 would it?

Think it was to do in the old days when they decided I think to bring in a minimum cal for dangerous game, due to quite a few people using supposedly miraculous small bores and getting flattened..chewed and ending up with a headstone describing their final moments....so the .375 was chosen...
All those Kell Bell want a bees

Here lies Mr. JD. Tried to kill a Buff with a 9.3. Broke his back and ruptured his spleen. Bet he wished he had stuck with a four sixteen. LOL!

:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: never me. I think the best course of action is to teach the wife to shoot a propper killing cartridge. I will work on that. Surely I can get her up to shooting a moderately loaded 416 Rigby.

I know brakes are a no no, but maybe in this case something to consider. Porting is not near as loud. Then you have gun weight to worry about. I know you don’t want a 375 but maybe. I have one cut to 123/4 inches.

I think that should not be an issue. My wife shoots my .416 Rigby just as easily as I do. The hardest part for my wife was the first squeeze of the trigger. Now…. No problem.

Alas he had brought one to this place, but the customs boys had to open the case. They kicked and juggled it 'round their base, then closed it back without a trace. Imagine the look upon his face, when the front sight was missing and lost in space. So when the time it came to be, he shot the buff with the 9.3. The difference made remains unseen, for the sight was lacking on his four sixteen. :A Stirring:

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
