.458 Mannlicher Shonauer

I love the Mannlicher Schoenauers.. I inherited an old 1910 9,5x 57 MS from an uncle.. He and my father used this rifle on many Hunts in the Zambezi Valley way before I was born. The barrel was pretty much worn out and Ammo hard to get( old Enoch at outrageous prices) but it had a sentimental place in my safe... Until it was involuntarily " donated" to the poor, along with all my other firearms during a home break in while away on vacation!!
Strsbgeky. The same uncle left me a BSA SPORTSMAN. 22LR rifle as well... This the police picked up in my garden.. I reckon the old man was looking down and doing his bit to thwart these thieves!!
Anyway, I have a 458 WM in CZ550 and it stables up with my other BRNO rifles. I love BRNO's and sort of heading towards a collection BUT I REALLY WISH I HAD BOUGHT THIS CALIBER IN MANNLICHER SCHOENAUER BRAND!!!
MAYBE ONE WILL FIND ITS WAY INTO MY GUNSHOP SOMEDAY..
My son has a new version of Mannlicher Steyr in 25-06, so we sort of keeping the tradition going so far..

Bruce, yes, the Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle is just in a class of it`s own...I am planning a walk /stalk hunt for wart-hog this coming hunting season...the challenge for me being to choose between the 404 Jeffery and my .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer to hunt with ...:LOL: The full stock .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer I mentioned in my post is for sale if you are interested to acquire one..I will upload photos of this rifle soon

Bruce I will do so, something quite interesting in regards to ammo for the .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer I recently experienced....I got a few rounds from a friend who re-load with Impala solid bullets, Impala brand and service from Kobus Du Plessis is really excellent ...The advantage of an Impala bullet especially in the large calibers like the .375 to the 500 Jeffery really punch a hole through the animal skin when you shoot it..creating a great wound channel...back to the ammo scenario....I loaded the rounds in the magazine and find that it was not able to cycle through the magazine and action...this troubles me since it was the first time I was not able to cycle standard rounds in the .458 MS...through closer inspection and assistance from Johan Greyling whom I consulted we conclude the following , the rotary magazine has slots milled in for the rounds to lay snug around the axis of the rotary magazine...the profile of the Impala bullets do not conform to this slots , thus can not cycle through the action into the chamber at all...I did re-load standard Stewart Bullets and this time it seems these bullet profiles conform to the profile of the slots in the rotary magazine..it feeds flawlessly at very fast cycling speeds....as it should ....so members who are shooting the Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles with rotary magazines be aware that the profile of the bullets you are shooting needs to conform to the profile of the slots in the rotary magazine....

Your observations are 'spot on'. The matter is discussed on the third post of this thread: https://www.africahunting.com/threa...908-m1910-m1924-m1925-or-high-velocity.47277/

I am more familiar with the 'prewar' MS (M1900, '03, '05, '08, '10, '24) and am a bit surprised that the Magnums are still as particular in their feeding habits, even with the addition of 'guide rings' to the Schoenauer magazine.

With my M1910 (9.5X57, or .375 Nitro Express Rimless) it is essential to have one's cartridge profile very close to original specifications in order to enjoy the legendary smooth feeding of Otto and Ferd's masterpiece.

It must be tough being you!

I'd like to get after some feral hogs with my M1910 (9.5X57 - .375 Nitro Express Rimless) someday.
Brian, yes, it really is difficult to make such a choice....:LOL: the choices will even be much more difficult to make when I completed my 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser and 8x68S Mauser build ...
The Stewart Core bonded bullets I bought from the manufacturer, Hansie Minnaar, also a good friend of mine really cycle like a very hot knife through butter...the Stewart Core bonded bullets are just a class of it`s own..everything I have hunted so far with these bullets was one shot kills from my 404 Jeffery and my son Ruan`s 8x57 JS Mauser,,,although I still am not able to retrieve the spend bullets from the animals we hunted, Hansie suggested I need to shoot the animals from the front to maybe able to retrieve a bullet so I can see what weight retension the bullets have after shooting the game animals..(y)(y)

Felipe, no entiendo tu publicación ... ¿qué tiene que ver con la discusión sobre el rifle Mannlicher Schoenauer .458 Señor? Por favor, dame más información para poder entender tu publicación.

I am sure it will be a great walk and stalk hunt with your caliber rifle , a great bush-veld hunting caliber rifle you have there..
Brian, in South Africa it is still possible to find a rifle with the 9.5x57 caliber ..you will even be able to fire form other caliber brass to work in your rifle if you do not get any ammo or brass ...A friend of mine on thie forum HWL do have some of the brass available if you are in need of brass for your rifle ..

The reason why Terry Irwin and Richard Harland used the .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer is because of the rotary magazine system, some of the Mausers magazine lids opend when a hunter used the rifle to shoot a lot of bullets very fast when culling elephant or buffalo..with the .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer it was not possible

Sorry...

Will not take place....

They are rare as hen's teeth....

Have not seen one for sale for years.

Would not exchange my Mannlicher-Schoenauer for gold.

Thank you, Gert.

I have that covered, however, and learned how to reload a few decades ago to feed the M1910. I had no source for proper 9.5X57 brass in those pre internet days but after much 'old school' research, and triple checking information, I resized fresh .35 Whelen. They formed with a single pass through RCBS dies, then were trimmed to length and filled with (then plentiful, now nearly extinct) Hornady 3715 (.375, 270 grain round nose) which made near perfect replicas of DWM531 and suited my purposes well.

These days, in the U.S. at least, the situation is reversed. Accurately formed and properly headstamped brass is now plentiful (Quality Cartridge, Bertram) but round nosed 270 grain projectiles are hard to find. Fortunately, I had laid in a fairly good supply when I could and have also a healthy supply of the Qual - Cart brass.

The thread I had linked to previously (here 'tis again) https://www.africahunting.com/threads/mannlicher-schönauer-prewar-m1900-m1903-m1905-m1908-m1910-m1924-m1925-or-high-velocity.47277/ contains an exchange between myself and HWL regarding the magazine rings and change of bolt release 'button', both of which were implemented with the M1924. There are also some MS magazine articles, catalog images, etc... .

Here's a question for you, though. As I live in an area that now requires that lead free ammunition be used to shoot critters, do you know of anyone who uses a 'lead free' load in an M1910 (9.5X57) that cycles flawlessly, performs well, and could advise of what projectile they're feeding it?

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
