400 H&H

I actually wrote to them for load data but nothing so far

I've loaded their bullets allot, I would use the starting load for the 300 grain Tsx and slowly work it up. They are an extremely low pressure design.
Do you have a source in Canada? I only get GAS Customs through the USA and that gets spendy

Sadly, I lost my cat in the hollow point of this 0.411 TSX.:( :D I am thinking this will work nicely.

I have read that a plinking load for the 400 would be to use .41 caliber pistol bullets. Does anyone know how you would start to build a load for this? The grain weights are not comparable to anything I can find.

Because my 400 seems to be a soft shooter I have not played with reduced loads like I have with my bigger guns. Trail Boss or 5744 are the powders of choice for reduced loads.
I mostly use Trail Boss, here the info sheet on TrailBoss and reduced loads...

Here is my loading data using the 300gr Barnes and Hornady

300gr Hornady and Barnes TSX COAL 3.540

H4895---ADI2206H
77gr.......2633
78gr.......2695
78.5gr.....2683
79gr.......2700
this load has been deadly on elk size game and an honest 300+ meter round. Using the Hornady 300 at 2700fps has become a favorite varmit/pest load as it turns everything into a grey mist..

That's great, thanks.

I was interested in using the pistol bullets as I assumed it would substantially reduce the cost of trigger time. Also, every article I have read mentions this possibility, but noone I am aware of actually does it.

You could try cast bullets, too.

I have read up on it. It seems a bit involved for my available space/time continuum....although it does look like fun.

One of the great things about Trailboss is you don't really need loading data (I know that sounds crazy).

From the manufacturer:

Wow...sorry about that giant space between the text and the thumbnail.

I tried to edit it, but failed.

Trail boss sounds really very good. I will pick some up for sure.

To me, the one downside to Trailboss is you cannot achieve what I would call "mid-range" ballistics with it.

I see the need for a 400gr cast at 1,800 to 2,000 for a nice general purpose practice load - and you can't do that with the TB.

But no powder is perfect, and TB fills a niche.

I can see breaking up the range time between full loads and trail boss just to keep the flinch factor down. I will have to look at cast bullets someday. Yet another thing to tinker with!

This is a fun and informative thread. I also read about using pistol ammo in 41 mag as plinkers but have no clue how to do it. It would be cool since I often carry a ruger 41 mag but those 210 grain seem like a long reach compared to 400 grain. We do seem to have a following for the 400HH. If you have access to Kevin Robinson book africas most dangerous look at page 118 and 119 for comparisons between MV ME SD etc. Also may June sports afield. Craig B did a nice write up on 400HH. I've had many knowledgeable people tell me there is no such caliber. They won't be borrowing mine. Cheers and beers

Just for fun:

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
Spending a few years hunting out west then back to Africa!

Hello. If you haven't already sold this rifle then I will purchase. Please advise. Thank you.

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
