375 H&H vs 300 H&H

IVW,

you seem to be answering your own question, :)

i think that for the uses you state, the 270gr setup is a good choice. you can even use 250gr bullets and go faster, but i think by the time the bullet gets there, the 270 hits harder and will be close in trajectory.

also the inch or so diff in trajectory between the 300 and 375 at 300 cannot be noticed from shooting positions in the field.

There’s quite a few options around the 220-235Gr weight for the 375, even some mono metals if that floats your boat, so that could be another path.

Whether the trajectory difference is sufficient even then is an individual judgement, but it’s an option,

FYI, my most accurate load is a 250 Barnes TTSX cranking along at 2,837 fps. It is not quite 3” high at 135 yards and 4 1/2” low at 300 yards where it still has over 3,000 ft lbs of energy.
That load has worked for an accurate croc load to an eland where it penetrated into the skin on the off side after destroying a shoulder bone, heart and lungs.
One of your excellent Rhino bullets should compare well to that I would think.

The LRX bullet might work well for you. Numbers in the calculation attached are estimated of bc and velocity. I didn’t feel like looking up the precise numbers. Point and shoot out to 230 or so then hold top of the animal for small creatures and high shoulder for big ones and you’ll be good to go.

The 375 has an advantage only against brown bear. For everything else the 300 is the clear winner. 300 shoots flatter, has enough energy, and recoils less. For long range it isn't even close because of the superior 308 bullets.

That is a ridiculous statement as far as I am concerned . I would much rather have a 375 H&H in about any situation I can think of. Especially in Africa.

I have shot 300 Weatherby's that recoil a hell of a lot worse than any of my 375's.

.

I use my 375H&H exclusively for long range in the Eastern Cape and Karoo, (dont have any thing else that can work, and are on maximum licences without extra paperwork). I use Perigrine 230gr VLR bullets @ 2850fps, the rifle is zero’ed @ 200m and I have hunted kudu and Gemsbuck up to 300m so far, and I was a bushveld hunter up to a few years back when I moved to Cpt. Almost no meat dammage, penetrate exceptionally well, and very accurate, and easy to load for.

I think you are missing the point

I basically want to find out how many folks use a 375 H&H out to 300 yard max for hunting. Not which caliber is flatter shooting out to who knows where..

If I want go long range I use below rig but it is not a practical firearm for hunting....
30 1/2 inch barrel excl the can, most accurate rifle I have ever used but quite useless from a practical hunting point of view.....it eats 300gr Accubonds and 286gr TSX....

Good looking Weatherby. What caliber?

Custom 338 Lapua, use to be a 460 Wannaby out of the custom shop built for a Spanish client who did a 18 day safari 2 elephant, lion, leopard, sable, 2 buffs etc....however he could not shoot it and changed to one of my 375 H&H and gifted me the rifle after the hunt.....

.450 B.C. at 2700 Fps at the top.
I would/do consider it a 300 yard / meter bullet.
I consider my 375’s with a 270 grain bullet of 440-450 B.C. at 2700 FPS, definitely good for the trajectory task of 300 meters. The impact of 2100 FPS at 300 yards of a 270 grain bullet should be sufficient for expansion and penetration.

Here is the senario.
I own 2 375 H&H rifle both on Brno ZKK 602 actions with pop up peep sights in the receiver.
Converting one to 300 H&H will be a pain in the arse.....

I am thinking using the original one with longer barrel with 270gr premium bullets in 270gr for longer range work(2700fps) max 300 meters and the custom 24" barrel one with 340gr bullets(2300fps) for bushveldt hunting.....

Bear in mind I eat what I hunt and with our stringent gun laws rebarreling to 300 H&H as mentioned will be apain in the arse...

This will be for larger pg species and for the smaller ones I will stick to 7x57mm...

I took both a .375 H&H and a .300 H&H with me on all three of my African hunts. I used 180 grain Silvertips in the .300 and 300 grain Silvertips in the .375. I took eland, greater and lesser kudu with the .375. All the other plains game was taken with the .300. This was in the early '70's and my choice of calibers was based on ammunition availability. I also took lion and leopard with the .375.

One factor no one has mentioned is weight. My .375 is noticeably heavier than the .300 and that often makes a difference at the end of a long day of trudging through the landscape.

My .375 H&H was part of a three barrel set with my Krieghoff "Teck" O/U double rifle. My .300 H&H was a pre-64 Model 70 Winchester.

I’ve used mine out to 500m in RSA with no problem. I have a Swarovski 1-8i with target turrets out to 600m. I use 260gr Nosler accubonds for plains game and moose in Canada. Works great!

Just a thought …. If you are going to rebarrel it, why not 300 Weatherby? Took this bull at 570m in the Drakensburgs with a custom AHR on a CZ550, 300 Weatherby, 175gr Barnes LRX @3300fps.

As I am not aware of what animals you will be shooting at 330 yds, for my work with a 375 I use a 260 Nosler petition at 2800 FPS (Re 15) and sight the scope in for 200 yds. I have quick detach mounts on the rifles. Sight the open sights fo 50/75 yds with 300 Aframes and sledgehammers.
However I am not a fan of 300 yd shooting, and yes I know there times when there is no choice. But for me it’s called hunting not shooting and I am negative on this fad today of long range.
Just my 2c.

Never ever I would slaughter one of these guns.

They are collector items, classic rifles, already today, in the best sense!

Load one of these rifles with a monolithic copper bullet of best ballistic shape, mount a scope with a quick reticle adjustment.... have a range finder......and here we go!

Max I need is 330 yards
I have a Win 70 375HH. I've taken springbok out to 275 yds using Barnes 235gr TSX. 200yd zero. Pretty small target at that range and no problem. A 375 HH is good for 300 yd plus.
