3 Cartridge to Hunt Worldwide

Need a 12ga in there so 3 wont do it...

The holy grail for me would be...O/U double
450/400 NE/450/400 NE
9.3x74R/7×57mm Bergstutzen
7x65R/12ga combination

We all strive for great shooting, accurate rounds and, when we’re at home, we can shoot and reload anything under the sun…..but what happens when your rounds don’t make it onto or off the plane?

Having been in that position with a 7mm08 (not a particularly uncommon round these days), I now will only travel with either a .308, 30-06, 300WM or .375H&H (or a combination). I reckon these are the global calibres and, should the ammo not make it, you can pick these up pretty much anywhere on the planet

Whilst we may all have our favourite, obscure, rare favourites when one travels, other considerations may need come into play.

FN

I’ve been looking to downsize to just needed guns because rest just collect dust. Given have wife’s rifle and 2 hand me down family rifles it’s a little bigger list.
22lr
223 (varmint/30 round mags)
243 (heirloom)
300savage (heirloom)
30-06 (wife)
6.5 (deer antelope)
300wm (back pack rifle)
375
12 gauge

could get by with 223, 6.5, 375, 12 gauge. Kill anything you want. Pistols don’t count, have too many

Is the .270 Winchester a worldwide known cartridge? Are there places in Africa to buy ammo for it if in the situation as said above, if lost or doesn’t make the flight, that you can go and buy factory ammo for it?
I know the 9.3x62 is a world cartridge now. It’s just started taking off in the past decade or less in the U.S. now!
What about the smaller varmint class cartridges, which ones are a worldwide cartridge, if any?

Hawk

12 ga. Shotgun
300 Mag
.375

you can hunt the world with these 3 calibers.
This is it. People always forget the shotgun in these lists.

Wingshooting all over the world.

Is the 12ga considered a “rifle cartridge”?

Is wing shooting considered "Hunting". ??

The Op, or the writer originally said 3 cartridge s to hunt the world, I guess not every situation or ammo availability was the goal more identifying their preference of 3 capable cartridge choices that would cover the basics.

I know an older Scottish gentleman who doesn’t consider anything “hunting” if it doesn’t involve horses, hounds, and red coats. :D

As an American any game shooting is called hunting.

As I look at this list I begin to have some odd thoughts: Other than carrying a lot of ammo to war or things like that, is there really anything a 223 does better than a 30-06? Sure, the rifle may be a bit heavier but then again for hunting you can go ultra light and for the few shots you’ll take it’s not going to be a problem. If I shoot a coyote with a 30-06 is it really going to do significantly more damage? Is a rabbit going to be any more salvageable if body shot? The idea that a smaller caliber is more accurate is largely illusory: +/- .001 inch is a more significant fraction of a smaller bullet’s diameter. I don’t understand the idea that it’s easier to shoot well- proper shooting form is proper shooting form and missing the target doesn’t make the recoil less. It is more comfortable to shoot a bunch of and practice is important. In which case, a 22 LR might be just the thing

Thinking along the same lines, I’m not sure there is much a 30-06 does better than a 375. I’m a huge fan of the ‘06, but last trip to Namibia, I brought my 375 for plains game just to use it and while it didn’t kill them any more dead, it sure slowed them down faster.

I like my 404 and I like my ‘06 but if I were starting over I’d probably just get a suppressed 22 kit for my R8 and use the 375 for everything. But then again, I’m getting to a point where I want fewer things not more.

In order to be technically correct- a gauge is not a cartridge. However to hunt the world I still stand by my 3 choices. I included a 12 gauge because there are certain game animals and birds that can and should be hunted with a shotgun, rather than with a rifle or pistol.

It is much more practical to hunt some of the tiny antelopes of Africa with a shotgun rather than a cartridge due to size and cover. Also, a shotgun is carried by many Ph's to follow up on a leopard after being shot with a cartridge.

Thanks

Hi Jon,
I saw your post for the .500 NE cases. Are these all brass or are they nickel plated? Hard for me to tell... sorry.
Thanks,
