3 Cartridge to Hunt Worldwide

These threads are always interesting in a mental exercise. Have a couple different 3 gun lists.

22 hornet, 375H&H, 505Gibbs
7x57, 9.3x62, 404 Jeffery
300H&H, 375H&H, 500Jeffery
22lr, 12 ga, 404jeffery

7x65 double, 9.3x74 double with a second set of 20ga barrels, 500NE double
22 hornet double, 405win double, 500/416 double with extra 20ga barrel set.

Sometimes, it would be much more interesting to see pics of the rifles, they actually go into battle.... not just the wish-list, they would like to have...

How after four pages, on such a knowledgeable and distinguished forum as this, have you not come up with the correct answer? It is a very simple and straightforward logical answer, but so many have been blinded by pet calibers.

.22LR

.375 H&H

12 gauge 3.5"
Not good for coyote at 450 yards, and not good for elephant charging at you at 15.

Also if you're not using the ideal, you don't have to get that close to the elephant.
Actually, you do or you don't have a shot. You don't get on a tree stand and wait for them to come by. ;)

There are multiple elephants in this pic.

Wow! That's some fairly thick vegetation. Having never hunted elephant before, I'm surprised your that close and they haven't realized your there through scent? Or maybe they have and don't care?

when asked by potential foreign hunters what calibre they should bring along for plains game hunting to Africa. i simply say 30-06. i know they sometimes want more of an explanation to what they perceive as a problematic question. but it is really as simple as that: 30-06!

Oh, they care. You have to get pretty close and make sure that you are downwind of them at all times. Most PHs carry an ash bag that they squeeze to determine where the wind is coming from. That is why one "hunts elephants with their feet" as they say. Might have to make a big circle sometimes just to get downwind and take a look. It gets dicey when the wind is swirling as well.

@African Sporting Creations sells a product for the ash (not that I would buy one as that is not my job to gauge wind). Though it is very neat, if one has a favorite PH, one should get one ;) .

Hunting all over the world? Remember military calibers are not allowed in many countries.
Some of these calibers are listed above my post, most noted 30-06, .223 & 7X57.
Another item to remember ammo availability in the country that you are hunting.
This is true though the list of military calibre restricted countries is reducing.

Belgium and France now allow most military calibres but Italy persists with issues on military cals.

For me, the list would be

.22lr
7x64
404 Jeff

How about I make it more interesting with a one gun limit?

My .405 WCF has accurately shot .411 bullets of 210 grain, 300 grains , and 400 grains.

That should cover everything from rabbits, prairie dogs, and small kangaroo to medium to large big game (300 grain) and large and DG (400 grain).

I tossed kangaroo in there for my Aussie friends.

12gauge with bird shot, buckshot and slugs can do most-lol. But seriously, a favorite is hard to pick with so much variety and overlap. Ok I’ll bite. 30-06,22Lr,12 gauge. Not necessarily my favorites, but three that cover most hunts one way or another. And by the way, 30-06 can and has taken dangerous game . Minimum calibers set by African nations is a farce-lol. Just another useless, pain in the but rule.

12ga with #7-1/2, #5 and 00 buckshot
260rem 147gr eld, 130gr scirocco and 155gr CEB solid
500 NE 475gr CEB raptor and 510gr #13 solids

given the versatility of most Calibers with the vast array of projectiles these days there is a endless list of great combinations.
with the 3 listed above I would feel comfortable and confident shooting everything from quail to elk to elephants

if strictly going with rifles I would remove the 12ga and add a 22magnum.

I'll cut it to two:
6.5CR for varmints and deer size.
375HH for everything else. .
Change that to 30-06 instead of 6.5CR. 06 will give more versatility and light loads will match the CR for practical purposes.

This was my answer almost a year ago...
257WBY
300WM
375H&H

But I'd really like a 20 bore O/U shotgun to round out the field.
In retrospect, I'd loose the 300WM because of overlap with the other rifle cartridges. Adding a 12 bore makes more sense from a practical standpoint and gives lots of options with different loads (birdshot to slugs) and a variety of chokes.

New list
257WBY
375H&H
12 Bore

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
