257 Weatherby on cape buffalo?

?stabilisation issues?
Not likely. You’ll definitely see that when you get into the 131gr blackjacks though.

I think it’s probably because there isn’t a major demand for 25 caliber projectiles when you look at the overall market. I’m guessing single digit percentages of rifle projectiles and loaded ammo sold are a quarter bore. I’d venture to guess the ROI isn’t there but only Barnes can answer that question.

This thread should have been titled “Really stupid idea…”

Anyone who has contemplated this stunt, and that’s all it would be, has almost surely never hunted Cape Buffalo.

If anyone is dumb enough to try anything like this, they’d be a leading Darwin Award candidate.

Yes, but the question is why? They have larger calibers in TTSX? I'm calling Barnes tomorrow for what that's worth. I'll give them your name and number Bob and tell them the hunters in OZ are about to riot over no 115gr. .257 TTSXs! LOL
@CoElkHunter
Ask them why they don't make a 225gn TTSX in 35 cal as well.
Bob

280 Swift also, if Northfork export them around now after relocation they have some heavies in ,35
@PerH
Problem is they are so expensive out here and don't get me started on nosler partions I'll let a picture talk about them

Yikes

That is 1800 Nok , for 25 pieces, thats awful. Can just hope for more Woodies to get back into shops again

Bertram do they make bonded ones ,or just cup core ?

i have heard that at some point in the 40-50s Roy Weatherby shot and harvested a cape buffalo with a 257 Weatherby magnum. I think its an interesting story and I want to hear some view points.

Completely mixed metaphor, but I know someone first hand that wanted to best Karamojo Bell's feat of killing an elephant with a 6.5 Mannlicher Schoenauer. (Bell actually killed many with this setup)

The acquaintance used a 256 Newton to brain an elephant. Dead in one shot.

I'd much rather use a 256 Newton on the brain of an elephant than use a 257 Weatherby on the boss of a buffalo!

Title could be stated differently. Heard the rumor as well. Weatherby genuinely may have been curious and was "experimenting." I believe it was at least a little bit of a marketing/advertising stunt though. More importantly after many years of field experience by untold numbers of hunters we know definitively that there are many far better suited cartridges than the 257 weatherby for Cape Buffalo.

Bob,
I called Barnes this morning but was unable to speak with a human. It kept routing me to their directory. So, I sent them an email about the .257 115gr. TTSXs. Haven’t heard back yet. Why don’t you send them an email about the 225gr. .35 TTSXs? They make those in .338 so why not .35?

In solidarity with this thread, I took my Savage 110 .25-06 to the range this afternoon. 200 yards with factory 117gr. Hornady Interlock ammo. A little windy (20mph) from the west. Target faces North. Top target from the bench with a Harris bipod and rifle butt against my shoulder. Bottom target off my standing Bog bipod sticks. None of it great, but probably good enough for a head shot on a buffalo …….. or a camel? Ha! Ha! Ha! You guys are KILLING ME with some of these threads! LOL

The .257 Wby is a fine cartridge. It is not a buffalo cartridge. I have no doubt he did it, however Roy’s position on terminal ballistics was questionable at best. He encouraged a generation of hunters to attempt many irresponsible stunts.
Stuff like this is why they have caliber restrictions now

When you get to the smaller caliber the Barnes TTSX shines especially at 257 Weatherby velocity but on plains game of smaller size.
Agree I would consider at least 375 HH or 416 Rem with Barnes heavy bullets ……buffalo are dangerous! No quarter bore for me !
Roy was promoting the new 257 Weatherby he forgot to mention the guide behind him with the Big Bore Double Rifle actually administered the killing shots.
