.22 rifle

I have always liked the 10/22 but am leaning towards a bolt action
I have a 10-22. Nice but it won't work with the banana mags. They don't seat right and will only work single shot. Works great with rotaries.

Ruger 77/22 then…. They use 10/22 magazines so you can get them anywhere and even use the 25rnd magazines in them.
AND you can get Shilen drop in .22 barrels for them as an affordable upgrade

Are they the Ruger factory banana mags? I don't have an issue with the Ruger ones (the BX-15 and BX-25 mags), which is all I buy now, but have seen third party mags (ProMag, Butler Creek, etc.) seat improperly and fail to feed.

To anyone on this thread contemplating a Ruger 77/22. They are wonderful guns and yes they do work with 10/22 magazines. They became so costly to make Ruger has discontinued many versions and has throttled back on remaining production. Those built before a certain serial number (I think in 2006) have a non-threaded barrel breech and are easy to swap barrels on.

There is an awesome sale going on for 77/22 after market barrels. Tactical Solutions makes a 16" barrel shroud that fits the original stock. It includes a cage for holding a suppressor can in its design. They don't make them anymore and are clearing out their inventory. The benefits of their design were 1.) Reuse your stock, 2.) The short overall barrel length makes it a reasonable gun to carry, 3.) The actual threaded barrel is far less than 16" which will reduce the velocity of standard and match 22lr loads to subsonic levels without having to buy the less reliable/accurate rounds that are specifically sold as subsonic.

What are the less reliable/accurate subsonic rounds that you are talking about?

The most accurate/reliable rimfire ammo made is subsonic, my reasoning for asking. Now we are talking about Lapua and Eley match ammo, which wins at the Olympics level.

Some of the bulk subsonics are not too great. I think they are marked winchester or federal, I have milk cartons of them. Maybe 1 in 20 is a dud that fails to fire and the groups aren't fantastic overall. They are cheap and usually fine. The benefit of the 10" barrels with the permanent cage making the overall barrel 16.25" is that it will take any standard velocity ammo (or high vel stingers) and turn them subsonic.

Yes, Eley and Lapua are definitely the match grade options. In the regular options, or the really good hunting options, typically a 22lr finds better accuracy with the premium rounds from CCI in my experience. Every 22lr is different, but it sure does open up options when you can select from maybe 50 options of standard ammo versus 5-6 options of subsonic ammo.

Understand what you are saying, just wanted to make sure we are on the same page. Usually speaking cheaper is you get what you pay for and for plinking it fits the bill.

I am not a world record rimfire shooter, I have shot against them in competitions and beat them, as well as them beating me. Have see some extremes as to trying to figure out how to get rimfire ammo to shoot.

No idea if this will apply or appeal to you, but from what I understand headspacing of 22lr is done off the bolt face. There is a guy that makes shims for the 77/22 and several other designs to alter the headspace/freebore of the gun by shimming the bolt. Shims are about $12.

If you're an accuracy nut, it appears that is an inexpensive way to deal with accuracy and many times makes a fairly big difference.

I'm not an accuracy nut but I am a success-in-the-field nut. My whole point of getting my kids a 77/22 stainless all-weather was to leave it in horrible barn conditions at the grandparents farm where they visit every 6 months, take it off the shelf, load it with CCI stingers, and check off grandma's list of animals that must be killed for their various infractions. (Woodchuck ate all her kale, rabbit ate her tomatoes, fox is after the chickens, etc.)

For future plans when we live in a suppressor-legal state, we'll put a can on the 2nd barrel we purchased so they can shoot Stingers subsonic and suppressed for the maximum lethality on small nuisance animals with minimum noise issues for the kid's ears.

Bit of "old school"- Remington 12C. My reason to chase greys graduated to the next life so it doesn't see much time in the squirrel woods these days.

youre going to make me go dig my Winchester 1890 in 22 L (not LR) out of the safe and take some pics arent you? :)

Mine are Butler Creek 25 rd. Might have to get some Rugers.

My "good old 22" is a Mossberg 152K 7 rd semi circa 1950. I put so many rounds through it I had to replace the sear because it started doubling on me. When I was a teen that gun went everywhere with me, like a part of my anatomy and I shot more game with it than all the other guns I've owned combined. Anything up to and including deer was fair game for the freezer. I still take it out occasionally to remind me of the good old days.

My only 22 LR is the first gun I ever owned. Mom and dad bought it for me for Christmas in the early 70's. It is the Winchester Model 94. Today, my wife loves to shoot it and it is topped with a Bushnell 4x from the same era. Fun rifle to shoot!

I love my 22s I use a sako quad as my hunter in 22long but I have 22mag and 17hmr barrels for it really handy package being a switch barrel. My best shooter is a voodoo with either sk or Lapua match. My fun gun is a decked out 10/22 with after market barrel stock and trigger.

Got a call from eurooptic today, UPS officially lost the rifle they sent, so are paying a claim out to eurooptic who will then reimburse me for the rifle I bought, I asked about waiting for the next shipment of tikka t1x‘s and they said it could take several months, so I am back to square one, except I now have Talley rings and extra magazines for a rifle I don’t have. Europtic is reporting the rifle as stolen as required, I sure hope there’s a special place in hell for the thieves who do this stuff.

Well the good news is you were made whole as far as the money for the rifle. I have been on the other side that insurance did not cover it and I had to eat it.

I have my grandfathers 12C. I learned to shoot with that rifle.

The connections with family guns are priceless, IMO. Mine belonged to a paternal great aunt. It passed to me a few years prior to my father's death.

Good afternoon, I love your rifle.
Why did you put a 20 MOA tail and not 0 MOA???

I am thinking to buy a new tikka t1x UPR

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
