.22 rifle

The old BRNO Model 2s are always a great find on the second hand market.

We searched for a few months until we find a first year, 1988, new in box, 77/22 stainless all-weather with the iron sights. Pretty hard to find but not impossible. Purchased the upgraded sear and trigger spring before it even arrived as that is the known issue with them. We got it and it shot beautifully. When we brought it to the bench to install the upgrades we tested with a trigger scale and at 2.5lbs, we realized the original owner did the mod already but never fired it! Mounted a 4x Leupold into the scope mounts and bought a case of stingers.

Well worth the cost considering what they are.

bought a spare barrel with integral suppressor cage in the event we ever move to a state where we can apply to purchase a suppressor for it.

@Ravensview - It's frustrating to electronically watch it show up via tracking...then POOF...it's gone. I hope your shipping troubles get sorted out with a good outcome for you.

We picked up a 22lr kit for our Blaser R8 rifles from Top Dog Guns Global in AZ. Van at Top Dog had the barrel threaded 1/2x28 before he sent it to me. It's a great training tool (as discussed by @One Day...) for us and keeps the cost of range time down by using cheaper ammo. Here it is mounted in a Professional stock with a fixed 6x Leupold scope.

I ran into a hunting guide who had one of those, for the earlier Blaser with a side-feeding magazine, about ten years back. He was a farmer who did guiding as a side business. The .22 barrel was used for practice and on-farm pest control. Excellent option.

Ours has the center-feed variant from the magazine above the trigger. I've not head of the side-feed as you described, but it doesn't sound much different.

It has been the most accurate 22lr (that is actually a rifle) I've had in my lifetime. Combine that with the number of varmints it has dispatched and the invaluable asset to training it has been...arguably the best rifle investment we've made.

There are many good 22's out there, here is my top 3.

1. Vudoo V-22 - Custom made action with R700 footprint. They will take any R700 tigger, fit in any R700 stock or chassis and are extremely accurate. They are build to your spec, so possibilities are endless.

2. Sako Quad - Light, accurate and will switch barrels between 22 LR, 22 magnum, 17 mach 2 and 17 HMR.

3. CZ 455/457 - Hard to beat for the price, accurate and good aftermarket support, upgrade stocks and chassis' are getting easier to come by.

Here is a photo of my Vudoo 22 Lr PRS training rig :)

@Nygaard I'm having a Rim-X built now. I thought long and hard about a Vudoo 360, in the end the Rim-X won. Is your Vudoo a Gen 1 or 2?

I have not been behind ZCO glass, I hear good things about them.

You have a very nice setup.

Mine is a Gen 2, I wanted it to be as close to my competition rifle as possible, hence went for the 90 degree bolt throw :)

ZCO is really nice, cannot recommend them enough.

That is why I wanted the 360, I shoot AIs when I shot comps. The bolt operation was just to heavy with the 360. Have a lot of the throws covered R8, 60°, 70° and 90°.

Yes that can be the down side with the 60 degrees.. What is the Rim-X?

I'm in same boat as you, R8, AI, Tikka, Deviant

I love the CZ 452, they are out of production but what a great rifle. Cooper, Kimber and Dakota made some beautiful rifles depending what you want to spend. The Tikka is a very accurate rifle for not much money. Winchester 75’s are wonderful, decisions, decisions! Don’t forget the old Remmy’s as well!

Bullthrower338, that is a gorgeous looking stock on your .22! Nice looking sling as well.

Thank you sir! I actually bought this rifle for a good friend @Clayton that passed away. I wanted him to have something that he really wanted, it is the CZ 452 Grand Finale, the last 1000 452’s made. I was very happy that he got to get enjoyment out of it while he lived. I’d give the other 999 of them to enjoy one more good conversation over breakfast with the man though.

The Rim-X mags are what really sets it apart. IMHO

This is my Ruger American Rimfire in .22lr. Not a very good pic but best I have at the moment. Love shooting this gun.

I have the Tikka T1x (20") and the CZ 452 American. They are both very accurate with entry level match ammo at 100 yards. I like to shoot them both!

I choose the CZ for offhand and stick practice because it is more similar to my hunting rifle. I use this to take a break from recoil while the barrel cools on my hunting rifle.

The Tikka is lighter with an easy, quick bolt that makes shooting 22 fun from any position.
The Tikka probably has a little edge in accuracy - but that may be the better trigger.
I set my Tikka up with a Leupold Freedom 3-9 with with the adjustable objective they call EFR. It will shoot 1inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards with SK Plus ammo on a calm day.

I hope your enjoy your Tikka!

22 Lr bolt actions are awesome! CZ 457 American and Ruger American Rimfire in the talo walnut stainless are great for current production on a budget. Would like to try a tikka as well hear they are very nice.

I would like to have the old winchester and remington bolt action 22lr's as well and of course an Anschutz. Cooper has some that look fantastic but the price is a little brutal if money was no object check them out for sure

I picked up a heavy barrel Savage 22lr a while back just to shoot while waiting for barrel cool down on the other rifles. I dumped the cheap plastic stock for something that fit and looked a lot better. I put a old Sportview on it but up graded laterfullsizeoutput_345.jpeg.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
