Where are the best places to track Eland?

Thanks for the recommendation. I have been seriously considering Coutada 9 with Mokore for other game but didn’t realize the Eland hunting was that good!

Where are the best places to track Eland?

As usual this forum is full of helpful people. Thanks for the suggestions! I had been considering Mozambique or Namibia. I hadn’t really looked at Botswana but I will now. I now have a few specific outfitters in Botswana and Mozambique to look at. Does anyone have any specific recommendations...

Where are the best places to track Eland?

I’m interested in doing an Eland hunt. I’d like it to be a traditional tracking style hunt. I would appreciate some input on where the best places are to do this. If it was in an area with good bushbuck hunting that would be a bonus ! I should also mention that although I’m sure I’d love it...

Could you please let me know what mount you are using for your aimpoint? I’m looking to mount one on my model 88b !

I cant get Recknagel front scope ring to turn in the mount...help please!

While visiting his shop I recently had a conversation with Eugene Combrink at Sabi Custom Rifles about installing these rings on a Krieghoff double. He advised me that some fitting may be required to obtain the correct tension to allow the front ring to be turned into the base. He told me that...

    Heym versus Rigby

Kevin, I had the pleasure of comparing the same rifles there a couple of weeks ago and I agree completely. The Heym would be my choice hands down. Likewise I compared a Rigby Shikari which they had in stock to a Heym 89b. I found that I liked the Rigby and Heym doubles about equally, but the...

Impossible to find used heym double rifle

I bought a Heym sidelock .375 at auction in the UK and a very nice Krieghoff 500/416 from a dealer in Spain and imported them. I am in Canada and it is very easy to import a hunting rifle, I understand it’s harder in the USA but I saved a lot of money by buying overseas and importing them.

    Ultra Light Arms 24 - 30-06 - advice needed

Interesting, Wilson Combat chambers their version of the rifle in 350 legend and I think it would be a great rifle for my boys. Light weight, less recoil than a .243 but lots of power for deer within any range they would be shooting.

    Straight Pull Rifles?

Honestly there are lots of good straight pull rifles. My first was a Heym SR30, it was well made and accurate but ultimately I ended up going the Blaser R8 route and am very happy. I have a variety of stocks, barrels and scopes/red dots that I can mix and match to suit anything I might...

    Blaser Wood Stock - Upgrade

Make sure you try before you buy…. The ergonomics are different. The wood and synthetic stocks are shaped differently. I have a grade 7 stock that is beautiful but I prefer the ergonomics of the professional stock. So the nice grade 7 wood just sits in the safe, not because I’m afraid to scratch...

New Westley Richards 470NE on order, who wants to hear about it?

Simply beautiful. Classy and with lots of fine touches but not over the top in any way. I honestly would rather have that than a more embellished sidelock. You are a lucky man to have stumbled upon such a thing at just the right time for you! There is something about Westley Richard’s that I...

Double Rifle suggestions for a first double rifle?

I’m in Canada so I can’t comment on the ease or cost of importing to the USA. But I’ve had great luck buying rifles (and shotguns) at auction in the UK and importing them to Canada. It is very easy for me to privately import a rifle or shotgun. Shipping isn’t cheap, but for high value firearms...

Purchased a Sabatti Double, anyone actually like them?

There were a few interesting dangerous game rifles in that auction. Including a Stirling Davenport .585 Nyati that went for the equivalent of $2000 USD. I hope you enjoy your new rifle !

This is terrifying. I can’t switch to tea. Forget it.

Jamaican blue mountain coffee. The good pure stuff, not one of the deceptively labeled blends that pretend to be what they aren’t. The hand picked peaberry stuff is even better. Unfortunately I quit caffeine, so I don’t get to enjoy it any more.

    Blazer S2

Export from the UK is fairly easy. I have now exported a few rifles and shotguns from the UK to Canada. I’m not sure about the US, but here I can do the whole import and customs clearance myself. There are deals to be had for sure in Europe, sometimes it requires communication in German...

Any Issues with 375 H&H Belted Mag in quality Double Rifle?

In a good quality rifle ejection works well. I have a Heym 88b and the ejectors are great. On a non ejector it would be an issue but a good quality ejector works well, Westley Richard’s figured it out a long time ago. Of course ejectors for rimmed cases are simpler, and theoretically more...

    Krieghoff 500/416

According to Krieghoff in Germany it was regulated with 410 grain Woodleigh softs loaded by LFB in Germany. I've found a good supply of Norma ammo with 410 grain Woodleigh softs, so I'm going to try a box of those and see how it regulates. I've also found some 410 grain Woodleigh solid component...

    Krieghoff 500/416

Well last year I sold my .404, that left me with three different .375s (a Mauser, a Blaser R8, and a Heym double) but nothing bigger. Then I found a deal I just couldn’t pass up. A nice 500/416 for a price that was simply too good to be true. Now I’m just waiting on the export license from...

Load Information For the 500/416 NE With Barnes 400 Grain TSX Bullets?

I logged in to look for 500/416 reloading data and saw this without even having to search. I guess it’s my lucky day. I guess my lucky streak is continuing, I got a bargain so good on a Krieghoff 500/416 that I just couldn’t turn it down. My local store has H-1000 in stock so I’ll grab some...

Single Shot Saturday - Show us your Single Shots!

Here is my only single shot (apart from my muzzleloader). It’s a Heym 44b in .270 Win. I hunted Whitetail a bit with it this year, but haven’t harvested an animal with it yet. It makes a nice pair with my .375H&H Heym 88b sidelock double.

    Mauser M12 rifle

I have an M12 in 30-06, with a walnut stock and open sights. The balance and handling are phenomenal, the trigger is amazing, the sights are top notch, and it’s accurate! I have plenty of other rifles but my M12 is never going anywhere.

Shipping a rifle scope from Canada to the USA

The market for stuff like this is much smaller here, but as suggested I think I’ll just list it in Canada for now. If import to the US was simple I’d just list it here, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Shipping a rifle scope from Canada to the USA

I know it can be a pain to export rifle scopes to Canada from the USA due to ITAR restrictions. Is it the same shipping a scope to the USA ? I’m curious as I have a Swarovski Z6i 1-6x24 EE that I don’t have a use for, and should probably sell. Also, what would be a reasonable price? It has...

Why did you buy a 6.5 Creedmoore?

I bought one because the guy I foolishly sold my .270 to wanted a 6.5 CM. So I bought the 6.5 and traded it to him to get my .270 back :)

    Scope for .375 double

I have a Z6i 1-6 already on my R8 .375 barrel, but I also need a scope for my R8 30-06 barrel. I think I’ll grab a Z6i 1.7-10 since it’s on sale right now and put it on my R8 30-06 barrel. Then I can compare the two directly before deciding which scope to put on the double. As I’m using claw...

    Scope for .375 double

It’s not that I want more magnification, it’s that the 1.7-10x42 is significantly better in low light which I find to be very beneficial for deer, bear, plainsgame, etc.

    Scope for .375 double

I have a Heym 89b sidelock in .375 H&H. It has a claw mounted Zeiss 1.5-4.5x18 scope which works fairly well on this rifle but I find that eye position relative to the scope is fairly critical and it’s a little finicky to quickly acquire the sight picture at times. I’m considering rescoping it...

Buying A Used Heym Double Rifle - Any Advice?

I’ve never heard of any particular problems with any of the Heym doubles. Mine is an 88B sidelock, the sidelock were discontinued at some point and seem rare enough that the auction house incorrectly assumed it was a sideplated boxlock. As long as the stock dimensions are right for you any Heym...

Need a scope for my CZ 550 .404 Jeffery

You’ll want to shoot a massive animal from very close, so a wide field of view is critical. I recently sold my .404 (on a CZ550 action) but I found a Swarovski Z6i 1-6x24 in Alaska Arms QD mounts to be perfect on that rifle.

Namibia To Lose N$260m Over Uk’s Anti-trophy Hunting Bill

Our own genius politicians here in Canada recently banned all imports of ivory from legally hunted elephants. They preach anti colonialism, yet won’t believe that stable African democracies know how to manage their own wildlife… To be honest it just makes me want try elephant hunting even more!

    Regulation question

Generally correct, although in the case of an unfinished rifle I’d be careful to make sure you know what you are buying before you purchase it. Make sure you budget for any work that may need completing, and don’t assume that everything else is finished. There are details such as ejector timing...

Help me pick my next R8 caliber

I’d be tempted to say .270 win to pair with a 9.3x62. But it depends on what you plan to use it for. The .308 would be an easy to feed relatively affordable option too. Personally for my R8 I went with .22lr, 30-06, and .375 H&H. But that requires 3 bolt heads too.

    Whisky appreciation

I used to drink a fair bit of that. But the price has gone up about 50% in the last few years and although it’s a nice dram I think it’s now overpriced for what it is (at least where I live). Tonight I’ll be drinking Port Charlotte 10 yr. I've also become a fan of Arran and more recently...

    Barnes TSX or not

Botswana is not on the current CDC list of countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. If I were to travel to an endemic area I’d get the vaccine (coming down with hemorrhagic fever doesn’t sound like a fun safari to me) but there are no endemic areas in Botswana currently.
