    Ruger RSM Uh-oh?

Be careful not to dink with the area.... a good surface repair will make that area disappear.

    Fortunately ...looks just focal damage.

    Ruger RSM Uh-oh?

Totally agree. The bedding is complicated as the action is in contact with a plate that is set in the wood. No direct receiver to wood bedding contact. The Ruger is nose heavy but mine is a tack driver in 416 Rigby. Only limitation is two in the mag.

    Ruger RSM Uh-oh?

Agree... pull and assess. Clean out around tang. May just be superficial! Glass bed. It's a little different bedding than usual and I have done it. Also, may consider having the neck reinforced with carbon fiber or steel rod through wrist. By the way... shooting off a lead sled with...

Premium CRF rifles that don't cost as much as a house

But "stalker"? My mind conjures something else. Anyway... a great rifle. Great to see Rigby back in UK and in good form as Mauser has left them somewhat alone....but as for Beretta and H&H..well...

My only grudge with Rigby is naming the rifle the "Highland Stalker"...it should have been named the "Caledonian".

What’s the best watch to wear on safari?

The old question... if you are going to the moon, do you take one Rolex or two Timexes? Now days, I also go for the G-Shock solar. The tracker missed out on a great watch. When I hear that someone is driving the Alaska Highway (especially in the old days), take a hammer , crack your...

    Still worth buying a 338 WinMag if I own a 375?

Not for sane ranges of hunting and even so the 338 is a decent longer range cartridge. I read once that getting beyond the "mystique" of the 30 caliber..... the 338 does more.

    Still worth buying a 338 WinMag if I own a 375?

Enjoy it for what it is. Sure, the 375 H&H can do it all but the 338 gives further flexibility.

    7.5 x 55 Swiss Smith/Ruben K31 rifle

The ejector on the Ruger No.1 will need a little work... maybe... as the rim is larger. Not wanting to be a total killjoy, but the K31 isn't a "Schmidt-Ruben". The 1911 was the last of that line. The action style is the lineage but the shorter action and the forward locking lugs depart from...

    7.5 x 55 Swiss Smith/Ruben K31 rifle

At least Winchester saw its advantages. Another "theft" by Winchester was shortening the 330 BSA and creating the 338 Win Mag. A 30-284 wildcat was made. I like Rl17 for the 7.5 because it is the appropriate powder. RL17 is the darling of long range shooting with the 284 with major...

    7.5 x 55 Swiss Smith/Ruben K31 rifle

True to form.... here is the name under my K31's butt plate. I deleted areas of ID. The K31 is the Rolex of rifles. To mimic the GP11 ammo, I use 175 grain bullets. The Berger is closest to design. Powders are in the 4350/RL17 class with RL17 being the prime (Swiss) powder to use. . Sweet...

    Can of worms

I was working up loads at the Rabbit Creek range near Potter Marsh in Anchorage. A group of hunters... obviously from the Lower-48 were sighting in their rifles for ... as it turned out... for a black bear hunt. Hint: How did I know... they had the biggest Swarovski spotting scope! Anyway...

    .318 Westley Richards

Here we are , in a modern sense, comparing the 338-06 to the 9.3. Then we enter into the discussion of 35 Whelen vs. 338-06. Both really aren't in a similar ballpark as the 9.3 but like AA farm league versus AAA on way to majors.. Still ... it is all about packaging. Take a look at the...

I bought my Russells through Cabelas in 2005. Had to exchange for a better fit but worked well . The toe box on the Courtneys has low height. It's best to try them out way before any hunt. My go to pair was a decent pair from REI.. hiking boots. I bought all of my Courtneys on eBay... just...

Why did Winchester skip over the 375 Win Mag and 416 Win Mag?

The "standard" Win 70 has always been fully capable of 3.6" OAL cartridges. The difference in the 3.34" and 3.6" OAL cartridges is in the magazine, follower, bolt stop and ejector. All are parts easily swapped out. I took a M70 Safari, swapped out those parts and was then able to load 458...

Is the CZ 550 Gone or Not?

The Brno nickname was the"crowbar of Africa". As for controlled feed... it may be mundane, but the Mauser design just works and is robust. With CNC, CZ can do anything it wants and could make a better 550 if they wanted. Oh well.
  30. D

Is the CZ 550 Gone or Not?

Their site describes the feed as coltrolled... but a new design. I guess in a Sako kind of way?
  31. D

Is the CZ 550 Gone or Not?

I am confused. The CZ website shows a major recall for the 600. Secondly, the action doesn't look to be controlled feed. The "old" machinery explanation is hard to understand since it was time tested controlled feed. Sounds like $$$ issue that would plague 1964-on Winchesters.

Is the .458 Win Mag not a step up over the .416's?

Is the .458 Win Mag not a step up over the .416's?

Too much of a good thing unless going long range hunting on Cape! Of the two, the 338 has reasonable value. The 375 is right back with the 378... a bruiser. I read one time that on one hunt the 460 was worth it...a 100 yard shot on a big tusker... but that is the only scenario. It boils...

Is the .458 Win Mag not a step up over the .416's?

I still believe the 458 is a stopper. Looking back the real speeds of the British stopping rifles, most were really not as they were in the field. Most were tested with 26 in barrels and in the field ... less. Looking at 1900 or so for the 470 NE. I still like the 45/500/2150 definition of...

Is the .458 Win Mag not a step up over the .416's?

There are "standard" and "high performance" 458 loads. The high performance loads are the Hornady loads which are 2140 fps at muzzle. Fresh modern loads for the 458 will go easily to 2100 fps. The problem in the past was congealed power from high compression. Wound up with low velocities...

Is the .458 Win Mag not a step up over the .416's?

Using Barnes TSX 235 grain, I get 2950 out of my 375 H&H with RL15. Very accurate.

375 firts barnes X bullets black box.......need loads

You have the original Barnes X. I would go with Varget. Start at 65 grains and plan on stopping at 68 grains. Overall length still 3.6 inches.
  38. D

Is the .458 Win Mag not a step up over the .416's?

The 458 has short range power but really tapers off at range. At short range, the diameter of the bullet makes a difference... all things being equal at 5000 pound-feet at muzzle. The 450 grain 416 at 2200 fps will outpenetrate the 458. If you what an all around caliber, the 416 is it. If...

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

The A-frames are a "harder" bullet .. so expect lower velocities and higher pressures ... so start a little below the Woodleighs and work up.
  40. D

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

Depends on the solids. Best to start low and work up..mostly for safety. Hornady softs and solids have the same shank so should be similar. Woodleigh solids are different from the softs and harder. Barnes are harder in solids than TSX. You could drop down ... oh... say 10 grains and work...

    .458 Win or .448 Lot

Today's powders and bullets make the 458 potent when compared to the issues Jack Lott had to deal with. With the temperature insensitive powders today, more confidence in loads to not have presssure excursions.
  42. D

    .458 Win or .448 Lot

Leave it as is if you handload. I have the same rifle and as you can see, the performance was excellent. Conversion is just a reamer cleanout to go for Lott and it can still shoot 458. YOur choice but no buyer's remorse.

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

I have a 450/400 also. I use the same backer rod diameter and the same method as you. The Kynock wad disintegrates. With the wind at my nose, each shot has a cloud of wad granules in my face, Backer rod is treated with a flame retardant. The wads do come out fairly intact. Large military...

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

I stand by my position. I am not alone in this statement. South Africa's Magnum magazine editor, Gregor Woods also so stated. Ross Seyfried used RL15 in his 470 article on the Ruger No.1 Bowen conversion (I own a Bowen 470). 3031 is temp sensitive... not as crazy as cordite (which was down...
  45. D

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

If it wasn't for the recoil, a slow powder with a column creating a mild compression of the load would be the best.... but that winds up in over 110..more like 115 to 120 grains in a 470... that is 500 grain bullet and over 110 grains of powder out the snout. Ouch.
  46. D

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

3031 is so problematic that it should.. it must be abandoned as a powder for large bore doubles. RL15 is much safer to use. All the major powder manufacturers now have better temp insensitive powders available for use. RL15 predates the major push to temp insensitive powders. RL15 works and...

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

Federal uses Rl15, but with the unobtainable 216 primer. Not using that primer will incur hang fires. I bought some cases that had been Fed safari ammo which werer taken down for components. Those cases had a Fed primer with a lime green color... I tested the primers and they were "hotter"...
  48. D

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

Depends on the amount a dacron. That is a significant factor. Too much compression by the wad boosts pressure. Considering the dynamics of ignition, all that is really sought after is keeping the powder column coherent particularly at the area around the primer hole. While a dacron stuffed...

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

There is an intrinsic limiter to hot rodding a double. Regulation. A danger can also be found when scope a double and changing the mass and balance of the rifle. Some publications have stated to sight in the double to use just one barrel....oops.
