At one point some years ago it was possible to buy a new one. Winchester doesn't seem to make rifles anymore. They do make cheap pump shotguns though.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I agree, far too many rifles to not feed properly as they come from the factory. Especially for a custom shop gun. It’s interesting though that the problem is involved feeding, and not the notorious extractor.

A Turnbull case colored 1886 with a stock made from that wood would be spectacular. I had niter blued screws for the final touch.

The FN made M70s are very fine rifles, but most don't have much figure in the wood. Plain but sturdy and serviceable. This one is much nicer than most. And the only WSM caliber that seems to have any presence in Africa, to boot.

I remember seeing some of the Dakota hunter models listed on Cabela’s site a number of years ago. They did not have nearly as nice of wood, checkering, or the cheak piece featured on this gun. I’m surprised no one has bought it.

It’s a boring cartridge because it just works. Nothing fancy, no special tricks. A little too big for most American game, debatably a little light for a few of the very largest American game. but it works.

I’m curious, why might this be a candidate for a project rifle? Looks like a very useful, solid and handsome gun as it is.

Kudos to you for posting the images of the scope mount alignment. I don't think that would present any problem with the common two-piece rear mount with windage adjustment. Once could lap the rings also. There are many factory rifles with similar variance.

I like these first year Hawkeye Africans. Ruger later added the forend tip and muzzle break. This model has bluing that is more of a matte finish then the later guns.
