Great story and really nice animals, sorry to hear that you had to endure a bit of bad weather. Congratulations on a good trip! Always like seeing pics of bushbuck and Vaal Rhebuck! Ben has been a great PH to hunt with. Thanks for posting your report and photos.

Another thread of trophy shipping costs..

Final piece of the puzzle, my crate was cleared through Customs today, cost for clearance (single day of storage) and delivery to Cincinnati, Ohio (next week) is $1,315. So a total of $3,290 all in.

Who else subscribes to Field & Stream magazine?

I had read the feral hogs were escapees from a private hunting preserve a number of years ago in southeastern Ohio. Went to Nelsonville for Timber Management degree at Hocking Tech early '80s, really good area at that time for deer and ruffed grouse. We never saw any sign of feral hogs then...

    Red Hartebeest help/advice

Color of the coat, shape of the head and the unique horns did it for me. I think I shot a pretty nice one. Certainly happy with the hunt and this critter. I live in an older ranch so no high walls and rooms are not large, figured the wall pedestal would protrude less into the room. Good luck...

Another thread of trophy shipping costs..

I have a crate that just arrived in Chicago, waiting to clear Customs. Taxi work done is a wall pedestal Vaal Rhebuck, and three Euros of Cape Eland, Common Reedbuck and Common Duiker. Cost was $1,380. African Wildlife Artistry. Hunt was during the last 2 weeks of July 2023 at Nick Bowkers in...

    Red Hartebeest help/advice

I have a wall pedestal in the works. I agree with other comments here, once I saw the one I shot up close on the dirt, decided to have that done over a Euro. Looking forward to receiving it.

    Site painfully slow

I haven't had opening or slow issues after the previous slow down fix, using my cell phone and laptop. I Do notice that threads start popping up in what looks like Asian lettering in the evenings (EST). But eventually clears out. I'm definitely an acolyte for "Computers for Dummies" handbooks...

Time slows down closer I get to my safari

Absolutely. Sounds like you're doing all of the right things, especially shooting off sticks (I did not do that enough). I had a good friend I worked with at the time, and he made it worse by asking me about the trip (I swear) every day from 3 weeks out. Timing really dragged from then on. I...

Time slows down closer I get to my safari

My first trip was in April 2021 with all of the Covid BS ongoing but you could finally go to South Africa. Scrambled to get my two vaccine shots before I left the US, anything to help to finally get to the Eastern Cape after being postponed in 2020. I would love to do that trip over again just...

    Binocular Advice Needed

I consider myself to be a more than a novice birder, currently own Zeiss Conquest 8x and Victory TFL 8x. Probably due to not-so-great eyesight, I have a more difficult time discerning a strong difference between these two models, but the Victory model is really great for birding in thicker...

    Winchester Safari Express Discontinued?

Will likely become available in the near future with a "new" price? I've noticed this happening with desired items on backorder- get notified that these items get discontinued and back orders cancelled, then they re-appear eventually. I've had this happen with non-firearm items such as ammo...

Has anyone heard Alliant is stopping sales of powder for reloading?

Stopped in a very small gun and tackle shop in Boston, Ohio after a morning of birding, found 6 bricks of Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primers interesting. Purchased one. All primers, vintage and new, 10 cents per. No new powder, cardboard canister of Reloader 12 was there. Should have...

    Powder & Primer Deals Today

Realizing this location is out-of-the way unless you live in southern Ohio/ northern Kentucky, west of Peebles, OH on Route 32; stopped at Dailey's Outfitters after birding the Shawnee State Park and Forest (was able to get great views of one of the Mississippi Kites nesting in the Lodge/Cabin...

What's up with todays' gun shops?

Country Attic was much more enjoyable when they had everything shoe-horned in basically a Cape Cod house off the main road. I miss that original store. If you lived in the area, adverts for Cash Ambergie (big guy with a straw hat, sitting on a rider lawn mower) are what I remember for South...

    Semi-Autos and Public Ranges

I have resorted to shooting early on Sundays, or mid-afternoons, but my job enables me to take advantage of that. Otherwise, Saturdays can be really busy. I feel your pain on the AR's, they are predominant on the 100-200 yard range benches anymore. I'm not criticizing as I own a couple that I...

Warthog, steenbuck and Common duiker are not budget busters to consider. That area has good Mountain Reedbuck as well. Have a great trip, good list you have going.

    Final packing list

A few decent quality 1 gallon and quart size ziplock baggies are handy to have along. For the roll of TP you "borrow" from the lodge to take in the field, kleenex, wipes , etc. Your list looks pretty thorough and well thought out to me. Some of the stuff you bring is appreciated by outfitters if...

Bring reloading bullets to South Africa?

Last 2 trips flying United and Delta from Newark and Atlanta respectively to Johannesburg, then on to Port Elizabeth, not an issue (2022 and 2023). 375 H&H Mag and 300 WM brass, and 200-250 count of .375 bullets. In my checked luggage, of course.

Looking for rifle suggestions for upcoming safari

I used a camp rifle (300 Win Mag and 200 gr ELDX) to take my Vaal Rhebuck last year, first spotted a small group on a mountain top plateau at over 500 yards, the herd immediately ran down hill and were even further away. They bedded down eventually, and my PH and I were able to make a big loop...

    Nilgai hunt

I should have mentioned this in regards to where I hunted on the King Ranch. The large area west of the Norias Division (west side of Route 77) had large open fields where bulldozers were used with old anchor chain for mesquite removal. Cover seemed to be mostly mesquite of varying age. So...

    Nilgai hunt

I believe highs were mid 60's prior to our arrival but also a bit of rain involved. The bulls we shot were about the average size bull we saw. A couple appeared larger but poor opportunities at a shot.

    Nilgai hunt

I hunted the King Ranch this past mid-February with a family member for Nilgai. Both days ended up being in the high 80's temp wise (unfortunately), just how it worked out. The weather had been a bit cooler previously. My cousin got first stalk through an oak motte to an open grassy area and...

    Best Quad Sticks

I have used and owned the Rudolph (aluminum) for several years but also purchased a couple sets of the carbon 4Stablesticks and like those as well. Left a set in SA last year with my PH. Either of these are good to go in my book. Only negative I have had with the aluminum is carrying in cold...

    Possibly dumb sling question

The Trader Keith sling was recommended by several members here to me several years ago. Liked the first one, I own several now. Previously used leather or nylon and was constantly hitching the rifle up on my shoulder.

Well, chatted with our AH master enabler @Mark Biggerstaff of @R&M FIREARMS today and it appears I'll shortly be the owner of a very nice S&W Model 67-1 revolver. Thanks for everyone's opinions and comments on this thread. Mark tempted me with a Model 17 also, but I have 2022 taxidermy being...

A cautionary tale - Traveling with ammunition in luggage

Hard to figure. Going through the airport in Eugene OR awhile ago with a brother, had a P-38 can opener in his wallet from fishing/ camping, TSA caught that. That is a small scrap of metal!

    Any other Cheese lovers here?

Stopping in Woodman's every fall in Madison after the annual bird hunting trip, the Stone Ridge cheap brand (3 year cheddar) was something to look forward to. Always load up on several kinds of cheese for the holidays and Klement brats. I enjoy visiting Wisconsin.

Recommendations for a range revolver in .38 Special

Nothing this fancy for certain. Spent some range time with a family member after work today and the 686 no dash had a few rounds through it. I like this new to me revolver. Trigger in single action is very crisp.

Considering the Model 10. You could call me fairly stupid for passing on a very nice one 10 years ago (would like that opportunity back) that was nearly pristine.

Recommendations for a range revolver in .38 Special

I've read about that somewhere and never even gave it a thought. I have a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk in .45 Colt with a separate .45 ACP cylinder, always thinking of this with single action vs double action. Is it simpler to swap out a fitted cylinder versus a complete assembly with a new fitted yoke?

Thanks, I have considered this, wanting to use the large amount of .38 Special brass on hand.
