ZAMBIA: Zambian Adventure At Takeri Game Reserve

hi all - I tell you I am now fluent is "aussie" - never had so many laughs ....spending time with Bluey is fantastic. And to answer an earlier question on the .270 round in the sable - unfortunately poaching is a reality in Zambia and we lose animals every year. A lot to snaring and then to guys armed as well - they will try and take down anything. I have even had two of my horses shot with shotguns - one had 21 pellets in him. Luckily I managed to pull both through and hence stock a wide range of animal drugs. My son shot a sable a few weeks ago and we pulled out 5 pellets from him. Most animals will survive if not a gut shot and light calibre. thanks for the great post Bluey!

fluent in aussie ...ha ha ha , not with that bloody accent , pats.........

"she makes sure none of us have any cuts on our hands , as these drugs are the real deal and there only so long that she will have to do her thing , and then reverse the drug
all the while she will be blindfolded , and continually being squirted with water , as the drugs make her body temp, sore.
this is something I really want to see."

now @bluey is this patsy or the sable you were talking about???? ;):E Rofl::D Beers:

you've been away from home , way too long cobber.......

He is one twisted SOB bluey.

But, it sure adds to the tale.

It's a darn shame, I bet more than 10x what ethical hunters take is probably poached in Africa.

up and out by 0500
we sneak into the blind like three mongrel dogs
as soon as we sit in the chairs, we hear some splashing and thrashing .as something was having a go at the bait in the water
we sat waiting for it to come up the bank ,to get a look at it , as for some reason the camera isn't getting any photos
as the new day dawns its quite a bit cooler this morning than it has been , the wind is not swirling either as it has been in the mornings,
after half an hour with no more niose patsy decides we should have a look see
we just get around the side of the blind and a head appears out in the middle of the river , we freeze and it turns and looks straight at us .
we slowly back out of its line of sight ,watching from our glory hole in the blind walls ,we watch her submerge and come back to the baitand rolls with it one more time , then nothing we slowly slipp out and leave it be
from a spot in the track a couple of hundred metres away, we check the land bait ,with the binos
to see that its completely gone
so we will look for something tantalizing to make another bait , this morning.
we start walking the roads again in no time we have two blueduikers scampering away , they gotta stop teasing us like that .
the novelty is starting to wear off ,on these so called rare antelope......:unsure:
we do some walking here this morning and end up in an area we havnt walked yet , with dried grass higher than our heads .patsy put a call in to mike ,asking for a ride ,to the next place
we no sooner get in the ute on route to the far end of takeri , when lackson leans over and says big bush buck, on ant hill , me and him slip of the ute and sneak back the 80 or so metres , straight up into the wind , we just get the ant hill in our vision , and the big fell had already moved to the other side of the big nest , I didn't see the head gear ,as he disappeared in the long yellow grass , but the body size ,is way bigger than the last three dozen ,we have seen .
lackson says he is the biggest one .... this young man has the eyes of three eagles .
plan to stroll down here again this arvo , only problem will the high grass will be inpenetrable , so we will walk to look at the many ant hill , which by the ,searching on top of these huge termite nest is never wasted time , from midmorning till dusk half the animals you will see here , are going to be ontop of these .
on we go looking for mr.reedbuck .
get down there off the ute and find the breeze swirling again after ten minutes we are watching two ewes ,watching us. while we look for the big guy. these reedbuck just disappear once they stop moving in this yellow grass
only the nose or there tail will give them up .
we just keep walking the tyre ruts , soon we have a small herd of sable ,about 100 metres or so ahead of us , just pushing them along quietly
only problem is my binos are on the big bull as often as im looking for reedbuck .
next minute three more girl pop up forty metres away from us and bolt taking several other unseen reed buck with them .........
we cross the road and follow the sable , this is like looking at the Christmas tree ,when I was a kid.
iwas glad when patsy called it a hunt ,and mike took me away from temptation.

Yes, it seem they have a lot of blue duiker!

that they do eric , that they do .....
id love to sneak around there when its green and see what you could off the tracks .........

driving along patsy sees an injure warthog piglet , looks like another snare on its back leg, we try to catch it , but it makes its way to the hole , patsy wants me to roar like a lion and see if we can get it out of the den :D really......
so she leaves it tuperware container full of water and a tuna roll for lunch ,and we keep going
with in a couple of hundred metres we see a muma a dada and a piglet the same size , so we assume that is its next of kin .we will be back here to see if patsy can save this one aswell .
ay this time a few more reedbuck ladies stand and depart , with a very respectable male with them .
off we get and load the 06 , moving along through this area reasonably quietly , we get to short opportunities on the male , to no avail
he keeps ruuning at the right time .
we slowly close in on him again ,and try a different tactic, we slide up an ant hill about 15 feet high ,theres always trees and vines growing ontop of them , the reed buck is about 140 metres or so , walking this way and that
im three quarters up the far side on the ant hill when he stops and starts walking around in small circle , we figure he is going to lay dow , lackso set up the sticks for me about two feet to high , , I start to climb up on top when our reedbuck mustve seen my movement
so I just put my hand on the closest leg of the stix at the right height , and shoulder the gun looking through branches and twigs its not looking real good for the shot
the reed buck is ass on to me looking back at us , l zoomed right up and that fixes the branches ,and leaves .
ass or neck ?
I took the neck , and he dropped right there . lackson gets as excited as l do ,everytime we pull an animal and is shaking my hand saying good shot good shot ,
patsy being patsy leans over and says that about makes up for the puku , bluey ....... shit she slapped me again !!!!
it would of been kinda pushing me off the ant hill ...
we wander over and I tell her this time we are going to do the aussie photo shoot , she smiles and says, aha right.....
l walk over to where he dropped pick up his head on my lap and smile ,for the camera.

after a few more at the scene snapps
with mike and patsy taking a few photos .
she says right now we are going to the dam wall so we can do it properly . we all frown ,and just do it .....
i'll have to find one of her lesser good ones to post now ,

after another lengthy session on the camera , we took him to the butchery , and waited for the rib cage ,to replenish the croc bait that was taken last night
after we set the fresh bait , we hurried home for some delicious sable spaghetti bog. man im feeling heavy , this trip .
so much for walking it off ,on a hunting trip .:censored::censored::censored:
after lunch we had a siesta , this is becoming a cool habit . while we are chilling out ,ZAWA paid a visit with mike and patsy ,
at 1500 we headed out for a blind date ,we sat there until it was way after dark just listening to see if our croc came in .
listening to the locals canoeing up river to their village , talking a way to each other , about a big croc they are seeing right here, lackson translated that the croc was somewhere near ,right now .
we sat a little longer ,hoping to at least hear it on the bait , but not to be .......
a nice and relaxing afternoon , after we had our fill of relaxation , we slowly crawled our way out to the ute ,for a relaxing ride home , mike nearly got us run over by another bloody blue duiker.
funnily enough were having blue duiker casserole for tea this evening.
before tea I was introduced to a new friend , for sundowners . gin and tonic , never drank one before , pats told me how refresheing they are , and after that I had one every night ,

:D Barman::D Beers:I have never been a gin and tonic person, but they can plow you over good and proper if you keep them up:whistle::whistle::whistle:

she mustve forgot , to tell me that ,eric
ive always thought of them as an old ladies drink , but they not only tatse good they really are refreshing , specially in the Zambian heat

Wow what an adventure Bluey. I'm very envious! Fantastic story and pics.

indeed - and with lots of animals wounded - some dying days later or left in snares - sometimes the poachers wont check the snares for days so a terrible death for the animal
