Winchester 1886 50-110 EX

Santa has been nice to me and left me a beautiful new Winchester (Miroku) 1886 .50-110 completely done up by Turnbull.

It is the takedown version and has a 24" barrel with a 1-20" twist to stabilise heavy bullets.

I was doing preliminary load development this weekend and was getting clover leaf groups at 50 m using cast NOE 520 gr (with my alloy lubed and sized) FNGC sized to .512" and enouph Bench Mark to do a comfortable 1968 fps.

Looks like I have a winner here that dishes out some serious medicine.

without being familiar with the modern 50/110 loads, is it capable of being loaded up any further? 520gr hard cast solids would probably work fine for buffalo but id want something heavier and tougher for elephant.

Agreed - our African bullet testing using my 1886 .45-90, with cast, FMJ, and solids showed that the hard cast did the job, but that the FMJ and solids deviated less and lost little to no weight. We did not even use the cast on ele and the FMJ expanded and the solids did the whole job.

The biggest I plan on using her on will be buffalo and I still haven't decided on what projectiles to use yet. I might go with the Woodleigh 500 gr FN, but I'm also thinking of using their 535 grainer as well.

I have a C&H die designed to correctly swage bullets to the proper shape (FN) to use in the 50-110. It works pretty well and combined with my Lee factory crimp die, it has really opened up bullet selection and availability.

For my hunting load, I'll probably switch to H4895 powder and load for accuracy. I hope she will give 2000+ fps with the heavier bullet.

Here are some before and after examples of my swaged bullets. The smaller ones are 440 gr designed for the 500 BPE in mind and the taller are the 535 grainers for the 500 Jeffrey. These bullets were made by Bertram.

They had just enough lead on the nose to allow reshaping to a more parallel sided flat nose profile.
