Why no love for the .358 Win?

If'n y'all can't find one the next best is a bolt action. Problem is those in 358 are hard to find at reasonable prices.
But all is not lost. There's 1,000s of useless 243s floating around just screaming for a new barrel in a real calibre. A nice 2nd hand Savage 10 and a new screw in barrel ( available at reasonable prices and you can do the job yourself) and you are set to go.
Go forth and rid the world of another 243 it will make you happy.

I've often thought of getting a .358 in the Browning BLR. Would be hard to beat for most of my conditions.

I see this thread got bumped up from the past. I have recently discovered the 358 win and I’m in the process of building an ar10 chambered for it. Can’t take it to Africa but it will be a nice brush gun for the south eastern US for deer, black bear and hogs.

I would recommend moving down to a 35 remington. Great shorter range game killer.

The BLR's are pretty neat, I had one back in the 80's. Still have a full box of Winchester .358 Silvertips. I loved the silvertips back then. I'll never understand why companies stop making good things.

I’ve never been so excited about hand loading for a rifle before. This Ruger Hawkeye in 358 is just the coolest little gun I own. Recently looking at some powder burn charts I’ve decided that hodgdons leverevolution powder would be about perfect for squeezing the maximum velocity and burn out of the heavier bullets. (225-250 grain) I will report back when I get time to test. For now I have a solid load shooting MOA or better with TAC and the 225 Sierra game king. Itching for elk season but maybe I’ll get a chance at a spring black bear with it in the coming weeks.

I use H322 for my ruger hawkeye. Get 2600 with max load for 225 gr accubonds/partitions. Leverevolution is easier to come by but slower burning. In my hands, faster burning powders did better. Rel7 would be my second choice, but it is also hard to find. For smaller bullets 180-200 gr, the slower powders like 4895 seemed to work better. 225 gr projectiles seems to be the sweet spot for the .358.

The man in the know for anything 358 win is @Rick HOlbert , man he makes that little 358 sing a different tube using win748.

Ricks load with a 225gn Woodleigh rnsp, over 2,500fps and the group he shot with it. The 225gn north forks group into exactly the same spot

So they can make cheaper things and make more profits. I have 2 boxes of silvertips left myself.

I was just reading through this whole thread again for the second time. What a neat read. I have a few boxes of old factory loaded silvertips. They shoot pretty decent groups out of my ruger Hawkeye. Maybe I’ll try them on a deer someday. I just really like the 225 SGK and the 225 partition. Hard to want to use anything else.
