Why no enthusiasm for Ruger MK11 actions

I wasn't shooting it backwards, when I pulled the trigger the bullet went away from me. Had I done it backwards I suspect Marius would have just used me for bush pig bait. I was shooting it on the correct shoulder too, just cycling it with the wrong hand. Not my fault the bolt is on the wrong side. Hee hee hee.

Is the ruger mk2 bottom metal steel or a cheap alloy ?

The reason I ask is they are very cheap here and if its steel and could be rust blued it could be cheap to build a custom rifle on one.

I have 4 MK11s & 1 hawkeye all have steel bottom metal , stainless on stainless & carbon steel on carbon steel , I believe they would make a great action for a custom, rifle like
a Mauser but better in some aspects, with out the hassle of tarting up on old M98.

I know George Gibbs use or used the ruger action for their VERY expensive rifles.

I heart my Mk II. If Ruger would sell bare actions instead of complete rifles, lots of customs would be built on them.

I used to rag on Ruger quite a bit 15-20 years ago --- They were priced much higher than the competition (that has since leveled off) and they never had a reputation for good accuracy (any of them, but that appears to be fixed). The wing safety is the only thing that keeps me from getting a Ruger now. If it's cold and you have gloves, it's hard to find and deploy. As far as dangerous game, I would not want to find that safety when all hell breaks loose. The Model 70 is hard enough to quickly work but at least it's appropriately sized. All that being said, I'm a fan of tang safeties.

I own and have owned many Ruger M77 rifles. Everything from .223 to 375H&H. In my world there are only two bolt action rifles I'm interested in. CZ550 and M77. I've own most of the other mainstream brands but none of them have been as reliable or workmanlike as my CZs and Ruger. That includes Kimber, Cooper, Winchester, Remington and a few others. Make mine a Ruger please.

I shot my first deer with a Winchester Model 94 .30-30 with open sights that I borrowed from my father. It was his saddle gun. He was mainly a bird hunter. My uncle from Montana thought I needed a bolt action and bought me a new Ruger M77 .30-06 with the tang safety for my 16th birthday. He also bought me an NRA membership. I loved the M77 and it never failed me. I shot countless deer, coyotes, pronghorn and later, elk with it. It shoots 7/8” groups with Federal 165gr Sierra boat tails. My son now has the rifle and shot a 174” whitetail with it this past season. It will always be in our family and it has a lot of sentimental value.

My father bought an M77 in 7mm Remington Mag. I could never get it to shoot less than 2” groups so we sold it. Some of them shoot well and some don’t.

I sold my Ruger Mark 1 in .300wm because I wanted the money. Things changed and I should have kept it to build something on.

I have owned the Mk2 in .308, 300 Win mag and more recently.270 Win. I also have owned M98s for....ever. It may be a bit of an overstatement, but it seems my Mk2 is a near reverse engineer of the 98 in form and function. My .308 was in the ultra light set up...fine working but not built for any range work. The .300 performed fine, but I wasnt enamored of the cartridge. The .270...even though in a well used but still fine shooting used rifle when I acquired it...seems to have everything pulled together. I have a 1933 vintage M98 in 8x57 which over a course of decades went from Dads inexpensive sporterized rifle to quite a serviceable and fine handling rifle now. The Ruger though does everything the Mauser does two lbs lighter, and far more inexpensively out of the box.

I have several Ruger 77s in my safe and agree that they are fine rifles. They don't take a backseat to any.

I have a couple and like them a lot. Nothing wrong with Rugers

Heavy (contributes to accuracy), hardest factory trigger pull ever (saps accuracy-fix!!) and actions bolt/feed/safety) often need cleaning up. Do that plus handload for the gun and it Will shoot (5 shots touching!) Very durable, reliable, consistent shooters (like the M98 & M70) after the aforementioned cheap and easy TLC. Myself and friends all have one in varying calibers.

Had a recent make Hawkeye African in .300 Win mag. Worked great, slick feeder, crappy shooter, gone.....

I agree if it looks pretty ,feed like a newborn but groups like a shotgun I give it a chance with a bedding job. If that don't work I'm not wasting more time on it, it's gone.
Mate had a beautiful No1 ride in 7x57, beautiful but wouldn't shoot. Ended up being a bent barrel from new. Fortunately the shop he bought it from took it back with a full refund

I know this is a Ruger thread but my son's Howa 308 shoots itty bitty groups with any 150s but put 168 gn matchkings in it it won't go below 2 inch groups. Fortunately all his kills have been with 150s

Ever try some 165 hunting bullets or 180's? It might just not like the SMK's.

Bob the Howa 1500 is a great product it leaves a Remington 700 for dead.

No we haven't. The 150s work well especially the accubonds on game up to oryx. My philosophy is if it works and ain't broke why play around with it.

I also upgraded the triggers on all my Mk2s to Timneys, which make a big difference. If you arent used to doing some "smithing" on your own though, let a gun smith switch them. Each has needed some fine fitting.

I have a few Rugers 2x375HH, 416R, 450R, 458Lott, 458WM plus a few smaller calibers. I think Ruger builds a solid rife. But they all need a little work, mostly polishing of the action feed rails, and some stone-ing (polishing) of the factory trigger. I find the stocks a bit "clubby" on the RSMs, but that's not the end of the world. In summation solid rifle, good value , just a little weak on some of the finer details IMHO.
