Who would or would not hunt with another member from the site

I've hunted 2x1 a few times but much prefer to go it alone 1x1. On more than one trip there were people in camp that I would not want within a mile of me with a rifle. Every night the booze flowed like water at dinner and on into the night. I couldn't see how they could hunt anything the next day.

One day the whole camp, each group of those Europeans with their respective PHs and me with my PH went springbok hunting. Several of those guys had to back to camp for more ammo before the day was over--and they still didn't score. Luckily, they were in a different area from us.

I am very leery of someone I don't know waving a rifle around behind me or messing up my shot. Then there is the know-it-all who can't keep his mouth shut for more than a minute.

There are exceptions, though. From what I read here on AH, everyone is pretty savvy, competent riflemen, good natured(?) and of similar mind. Wouldn't hesitate a second to share a hunt with most any one ( if I could keep Bob Nelson from lauding the merits of the 243 Win. Just had to get that one in there, Bob.) And any of the outfitters who advertise and sponsor. If they weren't good they wouldn't last. The bush telegraph works fast.
@Newboomer
It would be a short discussion on the merits of the 243, but dang they make the best tomato stake you will ever find. Religion, politics, sex and the 243 are the only subjects that are taboo in my camp. We can discuss what is better bourbon or rum or anything else tho..
Bob

Kevin, you can keep the Cigars, I am a reformed smoker.

But we did discuss shopping for a Pith Helmet if ever I get back over to Africa.

We can ride in your Land Rover and I will buy a some Single Malt for the evening s.

I might bring along our Famous Bundaberg Rum. It's not smooth like a good Scotch but it's great with a mixer. The aged and Blended variety are smooth but still distinct and unique.
@CBH
Maybe you could go on one of @kevin Peacoke theme hunts in you broken heel outfit with a pith helmet. A small double or a large double is doable even on our incomes. Just pour a bigger drink, single, double or half a glass and then mix. Double problem solved

@Tanks.
We had 2 on one and never had an issue but you need good people.
Bob
My issue with 2 on one is that one is basically saving a thousand dollars on a $10K hunt and giving up 50% of opportunities. It is great for the outfitter, but not that great for the clients. Heck, if one adds the travel costs into the equation it is even a worse deal.

Now, 2 on 1 might work in game farms where it is basically shooting fish in a barrel (zillion animals in 5 days etc. ), but I don't see it working for a free range hunt where one of the two might go home empty handed.

I hunted 2 on one with my son at times, with another client at times and on my own 1:1 as well. At no time d I'd I feel disadvantaged nor did the other person. Ours was as free range as you can get on on old cattle property. My son shot a warthog on a low boundary fence with the neighbors. It disappeared onto the neighbors but fortunately came back and was finished within 5 foot of returning to our property. So I think you could call that free range plus both property we hunted were 50,000 acres each.
When we arrived 2 hunters wanted zebra. My son wanted on but my budget wouldn't allow a second. The owner PH told us all if we want a zebra the first was full price the second was half price. This enabled both my son and I to take one each. The other two worked it out that they paid half the total for two each so both got a good deal.
It can work out well at times. With 4 of us taking impala on a differ property the owner gave us a good deal saving ALL of us money. Better for him and us.

I did the same thing some days during my recent adventure in South Africa, as well as what we used to do in Scotland. Switching between my father and myself on who was primary and secondary. It worked out perfectly.

@kevin Peacoke
The single malt and cigars yes. Impala nuts maybe but I draw the line at landrovers but some one has to love them.
Bob
After just one hour in my Landy you will absolutely love it .... and we will have driven 60km.

@kevin Peacoke
After an hour in your Landry I would need the services of a chiropractor that comes with every landy sale

I see the point regarding AH members/acquaintances as couples on safari could complicate things. But I wonder if the concern would be reduced any if 4 couples were involved? (I.e. more than two)

All depends on how the women get along..... :A Banana Sad:

With people I don't know, not taking that risk in a confined environment!

Amd to be clear, this is if the ladies don't already know each other. There are a few here who Nancy has gotten to know and it would be fine.

In all seriousness though, I would consider it with the right folks. It is definitely better that you know someone first, but that doesn't always mean anything either. My best friend growing up and I lived together in college. We almost killed each other....

Now what would be even harder, but not impossible, is to do couples. If that is involved I would definitely want to have spent time together first.

I said I'd consider this with the right folks. Been there now and done that. I've hunted with or had them stay at my house or I theirs with @gizmo , @Bullthrower338 , @tarbe @ActionBob, @Buff-Buster, and @Wheels. Heck I'm probably forgetting someone.

But I had a great time with all and have hunts planned for the future with some already. There are other folks I'd hunt with as well.

I think that the vast majority of AH members are like minded guys, ( I'm using guys in the broad sense i.e. which includes all huntresses as well) kindred spirts if you like. Sharing a hunting camp and hearing stories of past and current hunts would be a total blast. For instance, I've never met Red Leg, Ridgewalker, Ruger 375 Fan, Mark Biggerstaff, Toby 458, Von Gruff and a whole host of others and yet we share a mutual respect for each other. We think a lot more alike than we do differently. Hell, we all communicate more freely on this site than we do with members of our own family. Even though "we" come from every "walk of life" "we" all appreciate straight shooting and straight talking.

I thought we were swore to secrecy about that hunting trip up there on Broke Back Mountain Royal!!:A Secret:

I think I would enjoy hunting with most of the members here. Even people I might not see eye to eye with on all subjects, can teach me a trick or two I did not know yet.

As I am not coming from a long storied hunting family background, being able to be around more experienced hunters would definitely be appreciated. And even apart from the hunting, since a young age I have believed that "the best mistakes are the ones you let others take and you learn from". So listening and learning from those that have been there and done that is second nature for me.

Hopefully one day around a campfire then!

This is an interesting thread. @Shootist43 ,it's nice that you mentioned huntresses in your post! :) I am actually planning to go on a safari with a small group of AH friends later this year. I am anticipating that it is going to be quite epic!!!
@Royal27, I agree with what you said regarding women...THAT could go either really good or really bad depending on the personalities and situations. But I would not go with a group that included women that I had not previously met or became acquainted with.

Hell Royal, I suckered you in on the Amazon trip a few years back. Of course you had to “think about it” :ROFLMAO:

Gina, I hope I don't get criticized for saying this, but I agree with you. Guys and "huntresses" would get along just fine. Your reply to Royal27 was "epic."
@Shootist43, I hope you do not get criticized either, because what you said is very true! (y) :)

I didn't mention THAT one Cody..... And the term "wife" is so loosely used now.... Can mean anyone. :A Shades:
