Who Needs A Scope On An Elephant Rifle?

I agree that the the ghost ring does block out more than open sights. An RMR does seem to be the best compromise between a scope and iron sights. I've been practicing at 50-75 yards, so 25 yards should be a snap. I suspect an RMR would make thing even easier.
To the guys who use the RMR, do you use the battery operated, or the fiber optic style? I've looked at both and prefer the battery myself.
Battery. Also have the Hasty Sling Tanks has…amazingly better off hand shooting stability and fast to use

For those that use red dot sights on DG rifles, what size dot do you use? @Tanks I'm thinking about getting a Trijicon RMR as I didn't really like the tube style sight that much. What moa do you use?

1 MOA Trijicon. I have one for the .500 NE and another for the .450 NE.

I was given a free Docter sights by Heym, but it is 3 MOA so will put it on my Beretta 1301 Tactical.

On my .416 Rigby I have a Trijicon RMR with a 1 moa dot and love it.

1 MOA
The dot will appear larger/more MOA as the intensity increases.

You are correct, actually I can’t remember which MOA I have, I do remember getting the smallest available, have not taken that particular rifle out of the safe in many years but I may take it hog hunting this weekend.

I had JJ Perodeau machine the rib of my early Heym 88B for mounting a Trijicon RMR 1 MOA.

For target practice I decrease the dot intensity to as low and as small as I can see. Prior to hunt last October, I was able to put two rounds from each barrel into 4" at 100 yards off the sticks, most of the time :)

When hunting I increased the dot intensity to "bright". Then I would snap the gun to my shoulder every now and then for practice and to ensure the dot was bright enough for the area.

Note: The big bright dot would not be the best for target shooting. When a 116 yard shot at a giraffe presented itself, I reduced the dot size. That took about two seconds...

Thanks for all the replies about the RMR dot size. I will order the 1 MOA and give it a go. My eyes are just getting too blurry for shooting irons, and I really don't want a scope for a 20 yard shot at an Elephant. Also, if a distant shot presented itself, I would be better off with the RMR over iron sights for sure. Will also bring along a regular scope for using on other things besides elephant.

Good thread. I've mounted a Kahles Helia RD (2moa) to a CZ 550 .458 Lott for an upcoming elephant hunt next May. I've shot it twice so far and no issues with the AHR QD mount on the front action ring. Quite the handy set up. I've been walking on the treadmill with it in my Courteney's a few nights a week (while watching hunting videos, of course) and this allows me to hold the rifle around the action very comfortably.

I'll be taking a CZ 550 .375 H&H as a back up with a Swarovski Z6i 1-6EE with illuminated circle dot reticle. I've shot this scope pretty extensively on this rifle over the last 5 years. Very easy to shoot both eyes open at 1x.

How do you mount your Trijicon on your bolt guns? Do you attach it to the scope base? If so, what type of bases do you use?

I have a red dot only on my .500 MDM, mount it on a Picatinny base.

Other big bore bolt guns 1-nX scope mounted on a Picatinny base.

I have a Montana Rifle Company .416 Rigby and had a picatinny rail made for my Trijicon RMR. It was made by a guy in Washington state , with the extra height I had to put a padded comb riser to get the sight picture right but works very well.

The reason I ask about the mounting arrangement is, the little piccatinny mounts that come on the Trijicon sites seem very fragile. The mounting screw on the H2 sight that I sold was very miniscule. I want something robust enough to take the recoil, but will stay tight without having to use thread locker. I want it to be quick release, so I can swap back and forth between it and a scope. Seems like all of the mounts for the RMR style sights are made for piccatinny rails on AR15 style rifles, and seem pretty flimsy.

In the field, if you have time to grab the scope to mount it on the rail then you have time to remove the thread locked Trijicon mount.

You are not going to fire at a buffalo, miss/wound it and then switch to a scope in order to shoot it when it is farther away. :ROFLMAO:

Now, on my Heym, the Trijicon is finger tightened using a quarter. .500 NE recoil did not loosen it.

Well.....I'm aware of that! Just want to be able to switch back and forth during the hunt in general. Not on the same animal. I like the idea of being able to remove the Trijicon with a quarter, as you say, and install my scope which is in QRWs.

Before mounting the RMR on my Rigby I talked to Trijicon people and they said it good up to 50BMG, I was a little skeptical so I talked to some people that had used them on big doubles and they had no problem. I’ve run about 200 rounds thru the 416 and still solid as a rock.

I have no doubt the RMR will hold up. Just making sure the mount will hold up.

Shoot a red dot on my 500 Jefferys, and my 500/416 double and can comfortably hit the 6in gong at 150 off sticks. The one shot on elephant (Was backing up a friend) was at 28yards) The red dot had held up to several hundred rounds out of both rifles so you will be just fine with your rifle and the red dot.

I’m not in the elephant game, but from a lot of videos I see, the hunter would most definitely have benefitted from a 2x scope. While much is made of a 20 yard shot, I’ve seen many, many at 50+ from first time hunters trying to hit the brain.

Well I agree your average effective range is closer to 25 yards on ele. U might want to rig up a target at 10 feet or so and move in and out while shooting offhand. Just a little practice tip. Pretty sure I’ve seen that kitchen before and

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
