What Would Bob Nelson think of a .358x57 Round?

Yes, please!!
I would greatly appreciate that if you could?

Is there any fitting that would have to be done to convert a 8x57 Mauser to .35 Whelen?
Is there anything that would need to be done with the feed rails?
I know the Europeans load the bullets a little further out than Americans are accustomed to, so I’m hoping the magazine and feed rails won’t be an issue.

I will give him a call today but I think he is up the Cape with his son guiding for scrubbers with his 358, his son has one as well.
The Mauser should just need a new barrel and maybe a 30 ought six magazine follower. You could probably get JES to do a rebore and chamber and screw it straight back in.
Bob

Hey Bob. Do is all mortals a favor and find a way to produce a book of data and opinions. An absolute wealth of information you are sitting on
@Tgood1
There are far more knowledgeable people on this forum than me.
Opinions are like arseholes everybody has them. It's just that mine are a bit different to others and I enjoy experimenting.
I do enjoy answering questions and helping IF I can.
Bob

Hey Bob!

That’s really cool Ted came up with that!
I like that cartridge as well.
I have tried to find more about the cartridge, but all that I can find is just that Ted was the originator.
I can’t find any load data, or pressure data.
It would be cool to have that info.

@hawkeyesatx
I will attach the case specs for Ted's case and a couple of photos of bulls Ted has taken.

The bull that charge Ted after he shot the one above. It fell near his feet. He could only see one eye and a bit of its head when he pulled the trigger. Very lucky.
Who ever said the 358s weren't good can ask Ted about them.

Right, but it would be a higher pressure cartridge than the original 9x57.
That one was a little underpowered to me.
Let’s say 52k CUP, or around 62k psi.

Hawk
If one is going to handload anyway, just load the 9x57 up to where it produces what you are looking for. Would amount to the same thing, there is a 9x57 for sale on this forum, or was.

As Bob wrote, rebore rechamber or rebarrel to .35 whelen. Great cartridge or ream the chamber to 8mm/06 which is also a great cartridge.

I wanted to let all know, I bought a sporterized 8mm Mauser to be rebored/rechambered to the regular 35 Whelen. The rifle has a 25 inch barrel, and I think that will suffice with getting velocities up, along with it having a 1 in 10 inch twist.
I’m going to have JES out of Oregon do the work.

Hawk

If you dont plan to shoot really heavy bullets a 12 or 14 twist will work well. I dont know what Bob uses. Remington uses 16 I think.
10 is really fast for this cal.

Would a 1 in 12 inch twist work better for the range of bullet weights from 180gr up to 300gr?
Yes, Remington and Ruger used a 1 in 16 inch twist, but from what I've read, they can't stabilize anything more than 250gr bullets.
I would like a barrel twist that can stabilize the whole myriad of .358 inch bullets.

Just as a side note, Ted is a FANTASTIC guy.
He sent my son (who has chronic kidney disease) a beautiful handmade knife.
Awesome gesture from an awesome guy.

Russ
@Badboymelvin
That's just the type of bloke he is. Wherever my family is up that way we drop in and see him and his family.
Bob

Bob, and here I was thinking he is just a mere mortal Aussie, just like us and Russ.
@CBH
Chris he is above mortal as he owns and created his his own version of 35Whelen, Russ I think ha a 35. You might have to get a 35 to rise up thru the ranks just above mere mortal.
Ted is as down to earth as the rest of us mate and a no bullshit type of bloke and a great laugh.

Yes a 12 would be fine.

So Ted Mitchell designed a new round just so he can have his name stamped on the brass.
You changed your surname to Nelson-Whelen
You guys are far more dedicated than me.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.
