What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

@Bonk Your 100% right. I’m still active duty and price is definitely the deciding factor. That being said there are a lot more guys with nice watches these days.

I ware a Tudor and just with the people I work directly with there is another guy with a Tudor, and two guys with Omega Seamasters, one of them the 007 watch. This is a mix of NCOs and Officers.

I believe 3rd SFG just did a unit watch order from Tudor as well. These two brands have a huge following in the SOF community.

Very nice of you to offer this to your nephew. This is probably the most bomb-proof and still precise, automatic watch out there. I have the same but in dark blue.
I believe yours has the updated 8900 movement.

As promised. Fresh out of the box. I know the Air-King isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I really like it.

I know the changes from the older model were small, but I think they were done right! Making all the sub-quarter indices two digits brings balance to the face. Congrats!!

Very nice! I prefer this newer dial with its “05”, much more symmetrical!

At first glance the changes from the previous version are minimal but other than the dials being similar the new version is basically a completely different watch. Smaller and thinner case with crown lugs. 3230 movement (same as no date Sub). Addition of the ’05’, 3/6/9 indices are now lumed, the Mercedes hour hand is slightly longer and the dial itself is slightly larger (.8mm). Double latch Oyster bracelet with quick adjust.

I was okay with the previous version except for the case it shared with the Milgaus. It was unnecessarily bulky and I’m not afraid of big heavy watches. I have an Omega PO 43.5 diver I find quite comfortable to wear. The sleeker case and upgraded movement are what prompted me to buy the Air-King but the totality of the changes are substantial IMO.

How do you like it?
It is very comfortable on my wrist. It handles cold and heat well. It's lite and thin for its complication. It's durable and has good WR. It is very legible and has incredible lume. The complication is useful for travel.

I could easily be a one and done for a tool/field watch choice. As a bonus this one is running +/- .05 seconds a day on my wrist.

What's not to like?

Usually a garmin instinct tactical

Not the coolest thing going, but it is immensely practical. The time is always dead nuts correct, battery lasts about 20 days, gives me GPS tracking if I want it.

I have a nice automatic but the Garmin usually comes along for serious work.

Why no smartwatch? I have an Apple Watch 10 Titanium. Until now I have never worn it on the hunt, it is actually still new.

The smartwatch can be set to silent, so it does not start at the wrong moment. Especially when hunting, the observation of health values would be interesting and possibly even useful.

Smartwatches (Garmin, Apple, Samsung...etc) are nice and can be quality pieces of kit. Hands down, they are more accurate than any automatic, mechanical or quartz watch ever made. Plus you can answer call, send texts, monitor your vitals and who knows what else.

But IMO, they lack a soul and longevity. Are you ever going to hand down an iWatch (or anything electronic for that matter) to your grandchild...one that you wore on safari in Africa? Do people really consider a smartwatch a "cherished" possession?

Lastly is durability. Which I believe goes hand in hand with longevity. I seriously doubt a smartwatch will stand up to the abuse I dish out to my Omega PO. Not to mention that it's running about 15 seconds fast over three months. That's 7.7 million seconds and it was fast by 15. Not bad for a watch that's more than 12 years old.

Automatic, mechanical and quartz watches are much more than something on a wrist that keeps time. They are an expression of the person wearing it. It speaks to who they are and how they live their life. Well, at least that's what it means to me. I don't want to lump everyone wearing a non-smartwatch into this nostalgia driven rant.

Enjoy the timepiece of your choice...whatever it is. Cheers.

Honest to God....I'm on vacation. WTH would I need a watch for?

When my connecting flight's departure has been delayed to xx o'clock, I want to know what time it is.
When I awaken in the middle of the night due to jet-lag and am deciding whether to get dressed or go back to sleep, I want to know what time it is.
When the PH tells me to meet him at 05:00 for breakfast, I want to know what time it is.
When told that we are leaving in 1/2 an hour, I want to know what time it is.

And being an adult, I want to know this without having to ask another person.

Question for those who know about "smart" watches, as I don't know the answer and frankly don't care enough to research it: Do these "smart" watches need to be updated periodically? I know that my computer and the tablet must be connected to the internet to download threat or OS updates from time to time, and that eventually their operating system becomes obsolete and unusable. Or just plain crashes (e.g., the infamous "Blue Screen of Death"). But I don't know whether that applies to these new watches.

I own a few pocket watches that are well over a century old. The only "update" they require is daily winding and a periodic service from a qualified watchmaker.

They are basically just like a smart phone with all of the convenience and issues you have with those apply. They will, also like a smart phone track all of your movements and sell your data.

That’s one of the reasons for the resurgence of good automatic watches in the military circles. There are a lot of buildings on military installations where smartwatches are banned.

I wear smartwatches for fishing when I want to log locations. I wear a smart watch hunting when I want to use the compass feature w/apps.

There is nothing wrong with a smart watch hunting. It very useful. Just not a interesting to me.
