What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

a watch with a gmt function (2nd time zone) like a rolex gmt or explorer can actually tell u the direction you are heading, or should be headed if the sun is out. a gmt watch is definitely workable as essential hunting gear particularly on alaska DIY hunts out in the middle of nowhere. sometimes electronics fail/run out of juice/get lost.

Wow interesting - can you explain to my pea brain how that works.

I think I have an idea haha but can you explain it like I’m in kindergartner!

A simple Rolex explorer with a black face is my ideal dream watch. Simple and rugged and looks good with a tux. Haha

just posted a link to a short video how it works. yep i like the black dial rolex explorer 2 on a leather strap. very low key rolex and what i wear daily. incidentally, my 24 hour hand is set on alaska time.

I'm sure a few of you have figured out by now, that I collect watches, and am into watches.

This is what I wear most of the time in the field. I purchased this Dec, 2 2014 for $211.41. Today they are $209.00. They have actually come down in cost, given inflation. That makes it 10 years old this year this year. It's never had any issues. It has take its fair share and some not so fair share of abuse. It now sits on aftermarket strap lugs that allow aftermarket nato style velcro bands.

It have been with me as deep as 163 ft and countless times over 120 ft underwater. It's been on countless fishing and hunting trips. It has been below zero and well above 100 degrees. It's been in enough salt water to test if it's going to rust. While I might take another watch with me, as something I wear when I'm not in the field, this is, more than not, the actual field watch you'd see me wearing in camp.

Here is what I find useful about it above and beyond telling time. It is an atomic watch and sets itself every night. It has multiple time zone tracking. It calculates rough altitude and records changes. It tracks barometric pressure and records changes. It is water proof to 200m; well past depths I can dive. It tells me sunrise and sunset. It is solar powered and runs up to 10 months without time in the sun. It is more indestructible than I am. It does not draw attention and is not worth my life.

Other things it does that are cool, but I could live without. It has a compass, tells the temperature, has multiple alarms, auto tilt full screen light, stop watch, countdown timer, day/date, auto daylight savings time, auto on/off hour beep.

here is how a gmt watch can be used for navigation

So, just to be really clear. “Set to the right time zone”

Does that mean both the traditional hour hand and the 24 hour GMT hand is set to the time zone you are currently in?

It seems painfully obvious but I have asked the newbie question, just for clarity. ‍♂️

that is correct. To use as a compass you set both to the local time zone.

If you don’t have a GMT function, you can still use a watch as a compass.

Hey there Matt - i would love to understand some more about your bringing trophies home from South Africa in your checked luggage. My PH is holding onto a bushbuck euro and flatskin for me - and i am due back in South Africa in just over a week. He does have the export permit provided by the taxidermist for me. When you have a moment - could we go through the EDC Form and App? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hey trogon thanks for the shipping trophys info, so this being my first time shipping ,did you hire a firm here in the states to handle the import or was that an African firm, I would be happy with a cost around 3000+.

Just finished your book (audio) and ordered a hardback for my Library. You did a wonderful job explaining the way conservation works in Africa, and my wife is interested in reading your book now. Thank you for your work.
