What is your preferred 6.5/.264?

You might look again at that velocity. On another network I see folks talking about 3100 fps plus with the Berger 156 in a .264 WM with a 26 inch barrel. Should make a great hunting outfit. I killed 3 animals last year with the 156 gr bullet out of a wildcat 6.5 based off of the SAUM case. Good clean kills out to 340 yds. Good luck.

I was going by the norma data for the oryx. Hadn't looked at the berger yet. I'll likely have a shorter barrel than that, and not sure I want to push it that hard, but good to know, thanks!

You want a classic, but want more speed than the 6.5x55, if I am following this correctly? If by classic, you mean older, 6.5-06, 6.5-06 improved and 6.5 Gibbs come to mind. I shoot a 260 Rem at times, mild recoil and deadly with 140 grain bullets. When I hear classic and a 6.5, the Swede is my immediate response.

Mine as well, the swede is the true classic, however these new heavy bullets need a bit more so that's where I'm at. I looked at the -06 but have no interest in forming brass and if I was going to use that, the 260 rem, or 6.5 gibbs I might as well be using the .264WM with more readily available brass. That's my thinking anyway, lol

6.5-284, buy Lapua brass. Yes it costs more, but it also lasts a lot longer.
I have 2, 6.5-284 rifles and really like the cartridge

That was my first choice past the swede but by costs more you mean A LOT more for that lapua brass, lol.

Out of all of them I prefer the 264 WM. Hardly a better speed-goat and deer cartridge out there IMO. Easy to load also. Nothing wrong with the others, all good cartridges but the 264 seems to have more hand prints on it from being taken to the field when hunting appropriate sized critters.

Yes, but you get what you pay for with Lapua in my opinion.
I shoot 600 and 1000 yard match and the Lapua is the brass to use

I shoot over a 1000 6.5-284 rounds in a normal year

Quality and brass life. You will get a lot more reloads per piece of brass than the others.
When l buy a new barrel l get 1 hundred pieces of brass and it will almost last the life of the barrel shooting matches

I assume that requires more work to the brass besides just resizing and loading to get it to last that long?

Well then a 264WM is the one. It’s at least an American classic I think.

Lapua comes annealed so just the normal trimming and l will anneal at 6 reloads.
The barrel lasts 1000-1200 shooting matches when they are always hot. A lot of the time your barrel doesn't completely cool between rounds

That is true, and I'd really like to have the 6.5x55 but between that and the .264WM there is an 8in drop difference at 400yds with the 156gr bullets.
