What is the best place for Kudu or Eland + other PG hunting?

Most places without fences are dangerous game areas with hit or miss plains game. If you want roaming elephant and lion, Zim would be the best bet but you will be paying dangerous game rates to hunt plains game , not something most outfits will accommodate . Tanzania is another option but plains but daily rates be far higher then most would pay just to hunt kudu and eland.

Namibia has low fence and wild areas where you could hunt eland and kudu. I would start there

Tholo is cool for kudu and eland. No dangerous game though. At least that I saw or was aware of ( Other than leopard) Coutada 9 in Mozambique is excellent for plains game Ele, lion and buffalo as well. That would check all your boxes. Mokore safaris. I have done a plains game hunt there. Sengwe Research area does as well. Simply beautiful. Iconic Africa to me

What area would you recommend?

We hunted in June 2023 with Jaco at his camp east of Ghanzi for a great trip. Check with him to see if he has opened his new camp on the north edge of the Kalahari Game Reserve. You can read some of my reports with photos on AH.

I believe that they all have to be if they are outside the government concessions. If I recall correctly, Bokamoso is 130,000 acres. It’s a bit different in Botswana. The elephant tear the fences up, game moves around, even the buffalo fence is constantly torn up. When we were on Herman and Steenie’s place, about 60,000 acres, the lion, leopard and cheetah were everywhere.

When I spoke to them recently, they favored a plains game only area in southern zim but never mention nyakasanga. They have nyala in this area which interested me. I really want a shorter plains game hunt before my next DG hunt, but Zim isn’t the quickest to get to. My eyes are really focusing on Tanzania for DG so I can hunt multiple buffalo as well as a pretty large selection of plains game.

Coutada 9 in Mozambique with Mokore Safaris satisfies everything on the list. Dangerous game present and PG is $750 per day. Lots of kudu everywhere and good numbers of eland. No fences and a nice camp with excellent food. Fly commercial airlines into Tete and not a bad drive from there to camp.

I, my friend and his son, all tree hunters, are taking the very first steps towards a joint hunting trip. I would want to go after a kudu or an eland, and my friend and his son mainly after other PGs (I would actually prefer a buffalo, but PG daily rates seems to become more expensive if in areas best for buffalo, or in some areas good for buffalo, PGs are scarce).

Hunts will he 1:1, so should be able to accommodate that. And two or three observers.

Cost is somehow an issue, but am aware that regardless it will be expensive.

Want a place where lions, elephants and buffalos are roaming (and somewhat likely to be encountered).

Do not want: fences (be they internal or external), Cameroon, South Africa, nor Mozambique (unless really by far the best place, but seems also a bit expensive).

Any experiences and suggestions for locations and why are most welcome. And if you could also indicate the best time of the year, and why, that would also be appreciated.

I can give some more information in email, but will just summarise what we have to offer here, so that you can email if this sounds like a good fit for you guys.

We hunt in several hunting areas all over Namibia, and offer very good dangerous game and plains game hunting in no-fence areas.

Looking at what you are after, the following areas might be a good fit, please take into consideration that all no-fence areas in Namibia is on a strict quota basis, so there would not necessarily be 3 x eland or 3 x kudu available in each area.
This I could clarify on email. Possible options as below:

1) Waterberg Plateau National Park: we hunt exceptional eland in the Park. We have plenty of eland on quota. This is our prime buffalo hunting area, so you would most probably encounter or see a lot of buffalo and black and white rhino on your hunt, and perhaps see leopard if you are lucky, and very regularly you will see leopard tracks.

2) Kaokoland concessions: we hunt over 2.5 million acres of unfenced land in the Kaokoland area. Here we have limited eland and kudu on quota, as well as other exceptional plains game. In this area, you may very well encounter lion or elephant, and plenty of tracks.

3) Caprivi concession areas: we have limited eland and kudu on quota in the Caprivi. Here you might encounter hippo, croc or elephant during your hunt.

We hunt buffalo in both Waterberg National Park and Caprivi also, so if you do want prices for this also, please let me know and I can let you know what the different options for hunts would cost.

The Gwaii- Dette area. Also some Matetsi units can fill your check list. Driving time is one to two hours from Vic Falls.

As much as I love Nyakasanga, there is one unpleasant thing to contend with “tsetsi flies”. For an observer it can be misery, hunters have other distractions.

For kudu, Tholo Safaris in Botswana. I have been after kudu on many trips. This place was the best I encountered.

This is very exciting. Planning a hunting trip is part of all the fun. One must do one's research to ensure an exceptional trip.
The movement towards hunting without fences in Africa is gaining so much traction. The areas without any fences left to hunt in Africa is becoming more and more challenging to obtain and therefore the prices are according to the increased demand but also the supply which is diminishing somewhat.

Hunting Plains Game in open areas in Africa, without any fences is expensive, because logistically of hunting PG & DG in open areas are the same or relatively similar.

Perhaps your best bet and most value for money or most cost effective option will be to hunt RSA more particularly the Greater Kruger area. These farms bordering the Kruger National Park are large enough that fences are not really a big issue and you will encounter some of the big five, where the excitement and thrill will outweigh the need or desire for no external fences. - unfortunately one will then have to accept the fact that variety of species is then slightly limited.

There is always a toss up or consideration when budget is involved. I can promise you, I have hunted plenty Plains & Dangerous game in open areas as well as here where we are based in Hoedspruit Limpopo or for that matter throughout RSA, hunting with the big five being in the area is just something to experience.
Our concession, bordering the Greater Kruger with some of the largest Private Nature Reserves as well as the Kruger National Park is the perfect place and will tick all the boxes EXCEPT the fact that it has external fences. But we can also offer open areas in Mozambique - but this will come with a price tag because as mentioned previously the supply is low, demand is up and the logistics are the same be it PG or DG.

I second Bokamosa. I took excellent trophies a couple years ago there. I saw lions several times as well. My kudu broke the magical 60 inch mark. Trophy quality was excellent. That camp is a sister to Tholo.
