Awesome very cool. Flooded timber has always looked fun. I went to Arkansas several years ago to do that and we ended up hunting rice fields because that's where the birds were. It was an amazing hunt but one day I want to go back just to do a flooded timber hunt.

My dad was an avid waterfowler, and he got me into hunting through it. I am very thankful for his passion of the outdoors that he passed to me! I wish I had more pics, but all of these I had to take a pic with my cell phone of the original pics. Anyways here are a few over the years

A few candid shots he took of me in the blind. Sadly the pics don't do the lighting of the sky justice that day

Did you ever have one of those days when you couldn't hit anything. Borrowed shotgun and box of shells. Shotgun is filthy dirty. Every third to fifth shot is a misfire since the firing pin isn't hitting the primer hard enough to detonate. Everything is pass shooting and the misses are piling up. You know you aren't leading enough so you lead to much. It gets in your head. You break a couple of wings but can't find the birds in the tall brush since you don't have dogs. The PH gives you a hard time with good natured ribbing after the first handful of misses, then shuts up because he starts feeling bad and embarrassed for you. You realize the PH is now thinking all those one shot kills with a rifle are a fluke. It's the worst day of wing shooting you can ever remember having. What a horrible way to end the last day of an African safari. You are totally bummed out.

Then all is right with the world because on the way back to camp an African wild cat walks out........

I enjoy bird shooting, was out yesterday in tondwa, spent half the day in the pouring rain. and sparky here forgot to take a raincoat or change of clothes!
Mainly targeting White Faced Whistlers and Spurwing.
We didnt get any ducks, only had a couple of shots that were borderline on range, but we did get 4 spurwing.
Was sitting out in the middle of the plains, knee deep in water crouched behind about 3 blades of grass and trying not to swat the tsetse flies and mosquitos while hoping that a flock of whistlers would come in close enough. loaded up a pair of No.5's, but at the last minute they turned away, as they did, i heard the familiar flap of spurwing, so i spun around and they were just about in range and turning. Let loose with 1 shot and dropped a big spurwing. Craig managed to get one on the wing as well whilst we were out there, but he was about 500m down the plain.
managed another 2 with the 22hornet.

Love it, was supposed to be going on the annual spurwing shoot in a week's time, but this damn thing called "work" demands my attention!
If Craig has any pics, i will try post them... Bush internet sucks at the moment so will see how it goes.

My Father with a mixed bag. Some waterfowl in there.

@BRICKBURN My lack of technology is showing again. Would you please rotate this photo for me. Thanks.(y)

I spend a lot of my time training hunting retrievers and forget to actually hunt over them! I might get this dude out for our spring Snow, Ross' and Whitefront hunt. Goldens are where I get the name huntinggold. Raising and training retrievers is actually how I earned the money for my first African safari!
The marsh in the background of the second photo was the location of many memorable duck and goose hunts when I was in college.

Thank you! Hunting in the timber is an awesome experience. I'm very fortunate to live very close to some the best hunting in the state. I hope you have chance to come back!

Reedy;
American water spaniel or Boykin in those pics?

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
