Water buffalo caliber recommendation

Of course it is - I just returned from Zambia through Johannesburg. Australia seems determined to never reopen.
@Red Leg
Mate I live in new south Wales in Australia and we have been in lockdown for over 3 months. When we get to 70-80% double vaccination we will be allowed to open up again. It is to be called freedom day but how free will we really be is the BIG QUESTION.
I haven't fired a shot since November 2020 due to 2 rounds of surgery and this China flu shit.

Catch the news out of there periodically. I do not envy you. If Israel is the canary in the room, it appears that regardless of the vaccine percentage, one variant or another is going to work its way through our populations. Not sure what Australia or NZ do when that realization begins to take hold.

Trust the surgery was at least successful.

They will keep up the denial of already proven theraputics and continue on their commie power trips.

Where did you hunt your Water Buffalo @Red Leg ?
Never have. Never set foot in Australia. Did spend a bit of time in Thailand, but all those water buffalo were domesticated - pulling carts or plows. Not aware of anyone domesticating a cape buffalo, but I digress.

I mean no disrespect to the animal or those who hunt them. They are indeed larger than a cape buffalo. I would love the opportunity to pursue a couple with my .470. I would simply gladly debate the assertion that a buffalo - cape, water, bison, or aurochs (technically an extinct giant cow, but big) requires seven more shots to kill it after a 300 gr bullet "straight through the heart."

Bob's going ok I think, the Wu Flu pisses him off more than the shoulder. It's the lock down that's driving him nuts.
Bob seems like the social type we chat reguarly.

Joe, @Red Leg.
If you ever set foot in Australia let everyone know. We are widespread but it would be good to have a few cans around the campfire and hear stories of your hunts.

Lol yes, well I suspect the Buffalo was dead or dying when the other six shots hit him, but you would be surprise maybe on what it can take to stop one of the huge Coastal Bulls .

Some of my hunters biggest gunfights (very one sided) have been with 500NE & 460 Weatherbys both are great Buffalo killers but you need to shoot the Buff where he lives, not his face, off leg, guts or ass end (other than when he is leaving) .

I have hunted & guided on a fair few Cape Buffalo (in multiple countrys, even did many miles walking in the Mara, Kenya) & been changed once by a wounded Cape Buff cow & maybe close on a Bull but he got shot too fast.

Hunted hundreds of Water Buffalo (was a professional meat shooter plus over 20yrs guiding on them) been charged loads & many unwound or even looking at them at the time.

Now Bantang (very mean SOB's) on the 100 or so I guided or shot, was charged a lot by both sex's, that most likely was partly because of the thicker jungle we hunted in & end up being very close, same as some of the Water Buff when Bow or Spear hunting .

These are Cape Buffalo

Actually on the Domestic thing, I see loads of guys ridding Asian Elephants to, not so many of the African but we have heaps of Domestic African to some even used as snuffing Elephants or show Elephants .

Now I think back in the day hunting Asian Elephants was more dangerous than or at least equal to hunting African Elephant, I think Tiger hunting was most likely more dangerous than Lion also ?

Oh my, there's some really funny shit posted by some real funny people on this thread.

In maintaining the theme in this thread i think the time is ripe for my book on ivory poaching.
Bwahahaaaaaa.

Sarge, you've dropped a huge pelican shit on a heap of pith helmets with your pictures of "black-death".

Again - I am not denigrating water buffalo as a game animal.

I am probably poking a stick a bit at those who claim to have put that first shot at whatever through the boiler room/ heart/ lungs wherever, and then engaged in a running gun battle to finally kill the animal. Your experiences, which are far broader than mine, may be different, but my observations have been that the first shot in those cases really wasn't actually that perfect.

And I can absolutely believe there have been many, many firefights associated with killing water buffalo. One such battle in the Caprivi involving a cape buffalo I observed was typical. The opening round there didn't actually go "straight through the heart" (or both lungs or any where else particularly important). It took three armed men and an total of more than a dozen rounds.

My only point is that a 300 gr bullet that actually does center the heart ends festivities pretty quickly - regardless of the bovine in question.

Great pictures of the kids with the cape buffalo. I have one of me somewhere on a breeding farm in Namibia standing at the feeding station with them. Still not aware of an indigenous people who tamed them.

Elephants are a different matter. Let's not forget Hannibal. Those were not Indian elephants that he led over the Alps in 218 BC to fight Rome. They were African and trained as war elephants. There are at least a couple of Botswana photo safari groups that are using African elephants to tote around tourists currently.

I have no issue with any of these animals as worthy game. Mine is the notion that any are impervious to a correctly placed first shot. @Sarg I suspect you and I agree on that.

I'LL even bring the Bundy and Vegemite to the fire. Hell might even bring the 35 as well.

Maybe Red Leg will have a .35Whelen barrel for his Blaser, I would like to Handle and shoot a Blaser to see what they are like.
I have not used any straight pull.

I will look forward to that - ok maybe not the vegemite. And what the devil is Bundy?

But if there is beer in the evening and coffee in the morning, I am on board.

I’ll leave the .35 to Bob.

Bundy is the Devil. It's Australian made Bundaberg Rum from Bundaberg Queensland.

It is an acquired taste. Not for everyone. Not like a fine Scotch. . The aged stuff is a bit smoother. Myself I don't drink Bourbon or Rye.

I'm happy to use Bob's rifle and test his ammo.

Coffee is universal and beers taste even better around a campfire.

I too am worried we will never open up but I guess it will happen and happy to try meet any members of we can arrange something.

Chris we won't go down the straight pull road mate it could get kinky very quickly if people start talking about pulling.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Chris scotch sends me dilly as a wheel now and after a few I just want to do flying crash tackles on any and every thing and one. I don't bounce like I used to so I will stay with the Rum.

Fellow New South Welshman here also, dodged the bullshit for a while but definitely payed (paying) for it lately. Same same with lack of trigger time...

@425SCHADE

Don't worry about @Bob Nelson 35Whelen he is as silly as a wheel, and I don't want the big prick crash tackling me.

Don't get me wrong we get on great but no whisky for for Bob.

Where in the Rip Off state do you live ?

I live out west but the only places recognised in NSW are

N ewcastle
S ydney

W oolongong,
Agree with the N.S.W bit...those mountains make a hell of a difference to the rest of the state,
I've been in Orange for the last 16 years, grew up west of here but.
Sounds like we agree that some scotch/beer/rum around a fire is well overdue for us all

This has nothing to do with the topic, but with so many of our Australian friends reading this thread, I thought I would post it here and in the politics thread.

This is so embarrassing. I sincerely apologize. He obviously can't remember your Prime Minister's name after looking up from his notes.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
