I just wanted to share a couple of pics of a couple of projects I have been working on for the past few weeks... The idea occurred to me when I was Google searching ideas for displaying warthog skulls without much inspiration. I have also always wanted a porcupine quill lamp.....Then these idea kinda came to me...

If they have been done before, I couldn't find it. Anyway, both came out pretty good, and I am pleased with the finished products.

I also came up with a double wall mount for a pair of Euro warthogs skulls using a piece of salvaged driftwood.

That is one of a kind. Well done.

Love that lamp! Going to have to do something similar!

did you make the lamp shade yourself or buy it already made? I ended up making one when I got back home versus buying one while I was in Africa, but my homemade one isnt quit up to snuff.

BW,

I cannot take credit for the lampshade.... I have been collecting quills, and thought about making my own, but it was easier to buy one. I bought it from www.africancraftsmarket.com for about $120. They had it here in about 10 days.

I also made this a couple of weeks ago, and meant to post it... I was going crazy trying to figure out a cool way to display or use warthog tusks. I have quite a stock pile (We love to shoot warthogs)... I got the idea from a winery in Napa that makes all kinds of cool items from old oak wine barrel staves. I bought the rough staves from them and took it from there... This came out really cool and was actually pretty easy to create.

Really nice idea. Did you fill the tusks with some kind of epoxy? And how did you secure the tusks?

I filled the tusks with 2-part epoxy modeling clay. After the epoxy hardens, I drill holes to fit 1/4" inch threaded anchor sleeves. I secure the sleeves with a bit more epoxy. Then I through-bolt it from the back side. It makes a very strong hold.

I made another one recently with a beautiful piece of red cedar I found.

Did you make the lamp yourself ???

Yes,

It was actually pretty easy for the most part. The base is a standard oval taxidermy plaque that you can buy from most taxidermy suppliers. The gemsbok horn is perfect for a lamp because it is already hollow and no need to drill it out. For the wiring, I bought a lamp kit from Home Depot.

The shade was the only challenge. I patterned it after a shade I saw in a curio shop in South Africa. I used my own porcupine quills I had been saving, and you will need a lot of them if you want to have the quills of uniform length. It was time-consuming to weave the wire around each quill around the metal hoops, but I think it was worth the effort.... If you don't have the quills or the patience, you can buy these shades online or in Africa for a couple hundred bucks.

I wonder if there’s a quicker way to do the quills because from what i can see that took forever!!! lol

Would you mind taking a few pictures of the lamp especially how you did the quills and etc?

I took the hoops from an old shade I wasn't using. I used single strand metal wire, and did a single haywire twist around each quill starting at the bottom. It was tedious. I would guess I have around 5 or 6 hours into the shade.
