Warning on new Leupold scopes

Nanny state..... in the extreme. Lunacy. When was the last time you let your grandkids play with your rifle scopes?

Apples and Oranges my friend. Apples and Oranges....
@ftrovato - Good Point, I forgot kids can choke on Apples & Oranges too, plus too many “green apples” cause kids diarrhea and that’s a real mess.

Religious exemption is not absolute in the United States. Never has been, never will be.

Children dying because of their parent's stupidity is a tragedy that we can help prevent.
@RLD - when you post “We can prevent” - to whom are you referring ? Stupid Parents or Stupid Government? The same “Stupid Parents” are IN Government and passing Stupid laws. I get your point and some protections of children have been helpful but it’s far over reaching now —- My 6 year old MUST ride in a Car Seat? How stupid is that? Can’t use your cell phone driving BUT you CAN drink Hot Coffee? Adults MUST wear a seat belt. And an 18 year old can’t drink alcohol But they are allowed to Vote (that’s the most messed up law yet !!)

I think we need more smart people like you running for office to get this country back on track!!!

PLEASE DO.....

It's important that our cars warn us if the car thinks we are not paying attention.
It's important that we have plastic gas cans that are impossible to pour without spilling, to protect the environment.
I love that my Ruger has an ugly warning on the barrel telling me to read the instructions.
It's fun to try to open something packaged in plastic requiring a knife or small saw.
I don't know how I survived as a child drinking out of a hose, riding a bike without a helmet and shooting a BB gun.
@CJNJ Agree, we are raising Morons that can’t make decisions and must be protected from everything, they think being called bad names is “Bullying”….unless you have a Black Eye, fat lip, or bloody nose —-there was NO Bully

@ftrovato - I’m Not qualified to be a Politician, I’d rather sit back and laugh or watch others tell me how much protection I need. It’s rare to find someone on AH that may be able to handle a firearm and even spend a night in the woods without crying (or wetting their pants) but also agrees they need to be required to buckle their seatbelt while driving to Walmart. I must admit I’m getting Grumpy about those things.

How many car injuries and deaths are caused by hot coffee compared to cell phone use? How different is the distraction and cognitive engagement between drinking a coffee and using a cell phone.

It's funny you use the drinking age as an example. There have been a ton of studies that a 21 year drinking age greatly reduces the number of alcohol related deaths and injuries.

What is really funny is that people who object to most of those "terrible" laws don't know the first thing about the subject they are concerned about. They pull their objections, more or less, out of their ass. They put their convenience above other people's safety. They also tend not to have spent much time around children with brain or spinal cord injuries.

Ignorance is bliss I guess.

@RLD I have read recently that requiring special child seats for kids over 2 years old has resulted in NO benefit to those children in an accident vs. them wearing a standard seat belt. These child seats used on children over 2 years old (when the law allows seats to “face forward”) increases injuries to small children’s spine & neck. I was surprised by this and only read one article about it, it can be google searched. Unlike many studies that are funded by or lobbied heavily by those that stand to benefit from passing a law (manufacturers of child car seats) I could not determine a conflict of interest in the article But that doesn't mean it was totally objective. Another interesting article pointed out that all car accidents where alcohol is involved - does Not mean that alcohol caused the accident. It listed that even a car that is stopped at a light and “rear ended” by a sober driver - will be listed as “alcohol related” if the driver of the Stopped vehicle tested positive for alcohol. It certainly does not dispute that no one should drive drunk but that the statistics showing alcohol related accidents are somewhat inflated.

It's actually a really interesting subject, in both cases.

Full disclosure, let me say I have been a plaintiff side PI lawyer for over 30 years now, and while I only do child sex abuse cases these days, I spent more than two decades litigating MVA's and similar cases, with a speciality in product and road design litigation cases.

Child seat data is very good on reducing and preventing injuries even in the 6-8 year old range, although the real determining factor is the height of the child (4'9" so so being a nice cut off) in that the physics or vehicle/occupant dynamics of car seat vs. seat belt really do favour car seats. And there are plenty of studies (and experiments) done by pure academic groups or government only institutes that support that, inside and outside of the United States.

Alcohol use and injury (not just from car accidents as you can imagine, think violent crime, domestic abuse, falls, diving accidents) is also a very well studied area. The data is quite clear about how alcohol use causes significantly more injuries, particularly amongst males 18-21, such that we can save a lot of lives/suffering/money by trying to reduce/moderate use in that age group. The philosophical argument for why government should regulate alcohol use is longer, but I think it holds water.

In the MVA context alcohol has been studied to death, not just on the demographic side, but in the functional arena. We know that alcohol greatly slows perception/reaction time (critical for driving), and impairs judgement in a bunch of realms. For the same reason you don't want someone who is impaired operating a crane on a construction site, you don't want someone driving a car while impaired.

The point you make about how the larger epidemiological data is gathered for alcohol use and car accident cases is a good one though. In some studies if the screening is not thorough enough, the number of cases that are really alcohol related may be inflated for precisely the reasons you point out. However, in many of the studies done based on hospital records many researchers feel that the number of MVA cases related to alcohol may be underestimated because people don't tell the hospital staff they were drinking for legal/stigma reasons.

Numbers are a funny thing....One can find a way to lead people to the results they want with just a little bit of effort or a twist.

I'm pro anything that can have a positive impact on a child's life... but thats just me...

Point: Crack addicts can have baby's too!

There is quite a bit of difference between drinking coffee or any other non alcoholic beverage and/or eating and using a cell phone while driving.

People drinking non alcoholic beverages and/or eating are not...:

1. ....distracted trying to read a label the very second they put their vehicle in motion.

2. ....likely to drop and go searching for their food or drink.

3. ....likely to sit at a green light while eating or drinking.

4. .....likely arguing with their food and/or drink.

5, 6, 7, 8........etc.

People using their cell phones are:

1. .....not paying attention to anything or anyone around them.

2.....are more concerned about text messages and messaging than traffic and people around them.

3. .....instantly distracted and more concern about finding their phone they dropped than traffic and pedestrians around them.

4. ....to distracted to realize the red light turned green.

5. ....to distracted by their phone as they speed through school zones, failed see stop signs / red lights,

6, 7. 8, 9,.......etc....

IF THAT DAMN BS CALL OR TEXT MESSAGING IS SO DAMN IMPORTANT PULL OFF THE ROAD!!!!

@Ridge Runner - spill Hot Coffee in your lap while driving at highway speeds and see if You are Not distracted, and while you are drinking it AND driving one handed —. . Also, I’m Not sure what new cars You drive but I’m finding the “touch screens” ALL require you to take your eyes off the road —No “dial” to feel for and nothing is intuitive. My Ram truck has a round dial for shifting gears, right next to a slightly smaller round dial for the radio —- my 1968 Firebird was safer to drive

How many years have we been paying the worst in society to breed ? How about 20 year old males being paid to not work. People get out of prison and go on welfare. Wonder why we have problems.

Agree! A few years ago I went back to Ram after 17 years with another brand. Blew out my eardrums many times attempting to shift from park to reverse.

@Cucuy - Funny, you have the same issues with your Ram as I do. I love the Ram and like it better then any of my pervious F150 or Silverado —- but HATE the round dial shifter ! It’s been 4 years and I’m still not use to it. Sometimes when about to back up and looking out the rear window - I turn the dial to go into reverse BUT the radio volume increases !!

Austin Texas had the "Single use bag ban"... so the thin plastic shopping bags were made illegal inside the city limits and any bags had to be at least 3mil thickness; grocery stores instead switched to reusable shopping bags that you had to purchase.

However, if you went to ANY ethnic food restaurant in the city for a to go order they would ALWAYS hand it to you in one of the banned bags and the city only enforced the law on large chain stores.

Eventually the ban was shot down by the Texas state legislature, just like the public camping initiative that resulted in Austin becoming filled with homeless encampments.

Time and time again the state of Texas has to step in and save Austin from itself.

Like when the city of Austin was crying to "defund the police" - Governor Abbott stepped in and said that if they defunded the police then the residents of Austin were under no obligation to pay their property taxes........ GAME SET MATCH & OVER!
Austin…the “Donut Hole of Texas”

lol I’m sure most know what I mean!

Off` topic, but I loved my 2015 RAM Rebel, dial shifter and all, until the air suspension failed on a cold morning in deer camp and jumped up and down like a low rider. Traded it.

I like the idea.

These batteries are deadly to children. If this saves one child's life I'm fine with the compromise it imposes.

One might not have children around but who knows where the scope might end up 10 or 20 years from now...

My VX-5 has cross hairs regardless of if red dot is on/off.

If one doesn't subscribe...sell it...knowing Leupold is doing their part to protect our kids and their kids...
Why would a child have access to your gun? Most of us don’t buy scopes and just have them lying on the coffee table to watch the TV, we mount them on firearms.

@Twraska - good point. Wouldn’t having Knives in the Kitchen be an even greater risk? How about “locking up” the Stove too? Lock up the laundry detergent & bleach and of course remove ALL objects smaller then 2” from your property — gotta protect the Kids

I owned a 2019 Ram Rebel and traded it for a 2025 version in January. I got used to the dial shifter about 12 months after I bought it. The new one has a pistol grip type shifter on the console, as it should be. Funny, I got used to it about 12 minutes after I bought it! The dial shifter was a triumph of the possible over the practical!
