Want To Buy Right Handed 404 Jeffries Rifle

Going by charts only, it's only a little more than the .404. Rifle weight could make all the difference in the world and I noticed that .416 on gunbroker is only 7 lbs. 14 oz. According to many others, you want something like 10.5 lb.

Woof, I think I'll hold off on that 416 for right now, definitely need a heavier one.

Agreed, not for me. A friend of mine was considering buying the Dakota .404J that was so light. He decided not to buy it, but now his hunting wife wants it!!!!! Don't know how that will turn out!!!

Eventually Africa, Johan Greyling have custom build 404 Jeffery rifles in his gunsmith shop for sale...the requirements being the person who want to purchase a 404 Jeffery needs to shoot it, handle it and if he.she is satisfied buy it...if you have permanent importing documentation from your country , we supply the permanent export documentation from South Africa I really do not think it will be a problem to take your 404 Jeffery back to your country...(y) (y)(y) for $2150 ( American dollars)

Here are photos of the 404 Jeffery custom build rifles all with Obendorf M98 V24 actions ..

Gert Odendaal helped me a lot when I was trying to buy one of Mr. Greyling's new .404 J s two years ago. My problem wasn't with South Africa but with importing into the U.S. That was the first time I had tried doing such. The FFL holder I originally approached about doing the importation originally told me he would. Several complications came about during the next six months, of all I am not privy to, but to make a long story short, I gave up on it. If anyone can find an importer that will handle the transaction, expect to pay $800 to $1500 to have it imported, and that is in addition to the cost of the rifle.

P.S. I did import an English boxlock shotgun from London a few months later. The importing cost through Griffin and Howe to me was $1440.00. The gun cost $3300.00 in London.

Good to hear from you again Sierra, yes it really is a disappointment that you was not able to get hold of the 404 Jeffery rifle..you would have loved the 404 Jeffery Johan Greyling build,....it is a excellent quality and accurate smooth feeding rifle ...I am still trying to sort out the best route to permanent export /permanent import a hunting rifle fro South Africa to the USA, I believe we can really supply excellent , quality build affordable dangerous game rifles since we have enough Mauser 98 actions. I am currently working on a bottom metal/trigger guard /magnum magazine box that will fit on a standard Mauser action and turn it into a magnum action....as well as casting a double square bridge Mauser action ...all parts will be lost wax cast ...a friend of mine is contemplating purchasing a cnc machine that will be able to turn out the complete double square bridge action....(y)(y)(y)(y)

That looks spectacular! Unfortunately I won't be in South Africa this year. Blast it, but that looks excellent

Gert, where is Johan Greyling's shop? Depending on it's location I may be able to stop by and handle some of his 404 Jeffery rifles while I'm in Africa this July. In the meantime I will contact a Firearms Importer to get all the details and costs on this end. Depending on what they are I may or may not want to pursue this any further.

Shootist 43, you are more than welcome ....Johan Greyling, JS Gunsmith, Emalahleni, Witbank, Mpumalanga , South Africa.

Shootist, Here is my invoice from Griffin and Howe. Sorry, it was $1427 not $1440. This will show you a breakdown of what they charged me.

As far as I know , a citizen of the USA is allowed to import one rifle as a private individual and not as a company that will make it cheaper especially if the person bring the rifle with him from his hunting destination...so I do not see the need to make use of these agents if you can handle all the documentation yourself???

It does not have to be an import company like G&H, but it does have to be an FFL holder. He can import just one and not do it on a regular basis. A private person without a FFL cannot import a firearm.

Do you think the paperwork can be completed and the firearm brought back with a hunter... for example take a 2 gun travel case over with one gun but bring two back, thus saving shipping costs? Having documents ready beforehand.

Or does the gun have to be shipped directly to an FFL... or could your FFL meet you at the airport?

Shootist, Here is another importer that I have not used but talked to in the past. You might contact him and ask what he would charge.

My guess is no. The "new gun" wouldn't be on your Customs form (so you couldn't bring it through Customs at the airport" and you would not have had the back check done before receiving the gun. The importer is required to send the gun to an FFL holder, so you then have a background done before receiving the gun. Even if the importer is your FFL, it would still have to go him first.

Sierraone, Port Huron is just up the road apiece. I'll give Mark a call and see what he has to say. Thanks for the "tip."
