On this very website I found the “unicorn”. A LEFT handed .404J. A fellow member had it barreled from a Remington 700 RUM donor rifle. I picked up a better stock from another form and will install a limbsaver recoil pad, Mercury recoil reducer, and then send it off to Mag-na Port. So far it shoots like a dream and the brass just keeps going. Somewhere around 12 times reloaded with very little trimming. 2400fps with 400gr Woodleigh RN shoots 1MOA.

It took a couple years but it did turn up. Another option I considered was to rebarrel a Ruger No 1 Tropical.

Why don't you do yourself a huge favor and stop short of the Mag-na Porting. You might be very pleased with the mercury tube and not need to blow out ear drums Especially on a 404, it should be a pussy cat on recoil once you get a proper weighting and get used to shooting it.

Just pull it in tight and hold it close like a sweetheart and she'll treat you fine with little kisses instead of slaps.

Good point, the laminated stock will add one pound to the overall weight. A good pad and reducer in the stock will certainly help a ton.

The break and recoil reducers make a .458 Win kick like a kitten but bark like a lion.

find it hard to believe it would be difficult to get a 300 RUM action to feed 404 Jeffery cartridges.

Use a 416 Rem mag grind spacer off outside of mag box then a win 70 will hold 3 down + 1

Morning all! Just a quick question about the 416 vs 404. I can't do a lot of recoil and I don't reload ammo yet. Taking all of that into account, is the 416 really a much bigger kicker than the 404? I only ask because it seems like the 416 is far more common and cheaper. Any thoughts on this would be very welcome. I really hope I'm not bugging you all, it's just that you all have your masters and doctors this and I'm just opening the syllabas. My goal is, in the future, I'd love a bull buffalo, a night hunt on land for a raiding hippo and a lioness. Follow up shots needed quick, but my shoulder is bad and my knee had been operated on. So any suggestions are more than welcome. I might even be willing to trade my cz550 .375 towards one, I don't need a ton of wall stoppers after all. Sorry if this rambled, really sick but want to ask before the sleeping pills take me. Thank you all again for your help!

Eventually Africa,there is a difference. Although both normally use a 400 Gr. bullet. I reload 84 Gr. of H4350 powder in my Jeffery and 92 Gr. of the same powder in my 416 Rigby. But it doesn't stop there, the Rigby has a Mercury Recoil Reducer in it so it weighs more. IMHO there is still a bit more felt recoil with the 416. M416 Rigby is in a Ruger No. 1 so it is only a single shot. After reading Phillip Glass's Leopard hunt report I decided that I wanted a rifle with more than a one shot capability. Prior to reading that report I was quite content with the 416. My Mauser 375 H&H is no longer my biggest bore but it won't be sold either, that caliber is much more versatile than either of the other two.

Had both and I found 416 Rem mag a sharp fast kick and 404J @2300fps much nicer to shoot from all positions both with 400gr bullets..

Would be easier than with the 416 as a rum wasn’t available in a win 70 action to me at the time.
No feeding issues at all with my conversion and shouldn’t be any problems with 300 RUM action. Mag well should allow 3 down no problem and no alteration to mag well needed

I don't have a .404J, but for comparison I can shoot 40 rounds easy off sticks with my .375 H&H and not feel beaten up, while I shot 20 a few weeks ago with my .416 Rem and was black and blue the next day. That noted, I still really like setting off the .416!

I have both the RSM .404J and the RSM Rigby. No recoil reducers on either. The .416 Rigby kicks substantially more than the .404J. I only shoot factory ammo. Don't know about the Remington or Ruger .416s.

Going by charts only, it's only a little more than the .404. Rifle weight could make all the difference in the world and I noticed that .416 on gunbroker is only 7 lbs. 14 oz. According to many others, you want something like 10.5 lb.

My RSM Rigby is either 10 or 10.5. My RSM .404 with scope is closer to the 10.5. I handled a Dakota Safari .404 J a couple a weeks ago. With no scope it was around 8 or a little less.
