Vintage Safari Pictures

What a revolting shit. Why do you show images of apes killed by psychopaths? Nobody wants to view such crap. Well, maybe mentally retarded idiots do like the photos.

Slowly with the young horses.
Dead apes touch every soul much more than any other dead animal, and it is not easy (even for me) to bear the sight of them.
Since the mid 20ies ,max.30ies, of the last century, the overseas administration Gorillas under protection placed and could be shot only with special permission for the one or other museum.
And if I tell you, that today more apes disappear on the markets and in the cooking pots of the Africans than all zoos of the world possess these, you will probably spill your whisky from your comfortable economic situation, provided that you are able to think about it seriously.
They are contemporary documents that are shown here before they disappear and I am very, very grateful to AH for that and those who post them.

Does denying history mean an event didn't happen? Hunting baboons and monkeys are common practice now. Most baboons and monkeys are considered pests, especially when they raid gardens and crops. How is the world going to judge those that killed baboons and monkeys in 100 years? Were these gorillas raiding native crops causing people to starve? Looking at the photo, it looks like a large hunting party was dealing with a problem, although we will probably never know. Calling people psychopaths that may be protecting their food source may be a reach.

Judging others that lived in a different time and place against current standards may put all of us on the defensive at some point in the future.

Wheels you are so spot on with that reply, all of it.!!!!!

I remember reading somewhere a phrase that makes a lot of sense......The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there......It doesn't excuse things, but makes sense of them...

Did you notice the title of this thread?? It's called:
"Vintage Safari Pictures."

History is just that my friend. Gorillas haven't been taken by trophy hunters in decades, so lighten up.

Something to think about:

Lions and Leopards are legally hunted to this day....what if someone viewed them as you do Gorillas? Would you call someone who killed a Leopard or Lion a "revolting Shit" or a psychopath? You sound like an anti-hunter.

Killing Gorillas was legal back then.....are you a hunter or are you not?

Bushpig4Ever, I believe you are quite young, in making this comment...keep in mind the world you see in these photos is a world long past, it was a world with abundance and specie collections by museums , the world was wild , not over populated as you are experiencing it...making unsound comments in this regards really is not necessary,... look at the photos in the context it deserves...otherwise keep to reading the gunsmith forum, where no animals are harmed or killed...:LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL:(y)(y)(y)

That’s a huge bear! I lived in Kenai for a number of years. We had plenty of bear but nothing like that!

Neat photo.

I always enjoy hearing the names of locations I learned in my school days, instead of the new fangled names they have been changed to.

If you have other photos from back in the day, please share them also.

Nice looking roan. Thanks for the photo. The thought of roan as a freezer filler, will seem strange in this day an age.

Sorry you lost many photos. Hopefully you can find some more. I for one, really enjoy them!

@Wheels ,

The good old days , when we could hunt wherever we wanted , self guided only .

The guys with us smoked the bush meat , my father took the fresh righ pieces .

For memory , in 1972 , the tax for an ele was 5000Fcfa before devaluation, equivalent to 3,8 euros now !!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing the information. Really neat to read your memories.

We did much the same. If we needed meat, we would load the kerosene freezer in the back of the 5 ton. We would usually keep the straps, some roasts and mince meats and wrap them in old newspapers. The guys would dry the rest. When the freezer was full we would go home. Otherwise our hunting was mainly day trips where we would get one or two animals. Our elephant weren’t as cheap as yours but our buffalo were a dollar or two at the old exchange rates.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
