Trophy - The Film

I just finished watching the film. I found it quite interesting, indeed. I'll do my best to avoid any spoiling, but I would like to note that those of you who use VUDU can also get the film. I found that while I did a Rotten Tomatoes review.

The information provided by the ecologist was exceptional. I fully appreciated the perspective by John Hume, and his passion for the animals. Seeing the animals that were victims of poaching struck me deeply. Initially, I was not in agreement with the anti-poaching team, but with further viewing I came to understand how and why his method is effective. The debate was important to the overall film's perspective, but I was disappointed to see that there wasn't any audience support. Emotion overtook any rational tendencies in far too many people, as we all see in our regular lives when it comes to those against hunting.

@Philip Glass, I would like to thank you, as many already have, for letting us into your adventure, your life, your home. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film, and will certainly share it with others. I'll encourage others to buy it as well. While he's only 6, I think my son can learn a valuable lesson from watching it with me. Interestingly, I was already having the same emotion you showed at the lion hunt, before it even came from you. Very powerful moment, and again I thank you.

Thank you so very much for posting your view of the film and of me. I really appreciate the comments it means a lot to me. Please keep getting the word out so others will watch this film and join the discussion.

Yes Trophy is out on all digital download services as of yesterday. I will finally let Jasper, my 11 year old featured in the film, watch it with me - mute button in hand due to a little profanity here and there.
I will post as soon as I know about DVD sales (I’ve contacted the distributor of the film).
I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on Trophy and how we can use it to further our positive discussion on hunting and conservation. So please by all means watch it. Better yet get your hunting and outdoor friends together instead of watching the NFL and have a party this weekend!

Regards,
Philip

I watched last night, not what I expected from the preview. Just shocked at the conduct of the other hunters in the film and the implication that hunting farms are nothing more then "canned" hunting. I don't see how anything positive is going to come out of the film with the "hunting" the other hunters conducted.

I watched last night as well. Good job @Philip Glass and thank you for doing this!

Like @wesheltonj , I was also shocked(appalled actually) at the actions of the other "hunter" shown in the film. I'm not sure how anyone would think that was acceptable behavior...especially when he knew he was being filmed!

The conservation message will be drowned out by the poor behavior of the "Farm" hunt. No wonder the one reviewer calls this the next Blackfish.

Mini Me acknowledged that other guy as not doing the right thing. Proud moment for me when a first grader knows the difference [emoji16]

Well lots of positives have come out from this film already. Showing a put and take croc hunt is not pleasant to many of us but is a reality. Whether it’s a canned hunt or not is for everyone to decide themselves. A true documentary must show all sides of an issue. Of late most all docs are hack jobs from one side or the other but this one stands in contrast.

Yea he is a jackass! What else can I say. But I suppose it made a contrast to me as a hunter.

I must tell you that the conservation message has not been drowned out from the actions of one “unnamed hunter” who acts badly in one short scene. This film has spawned many follow up stories and questions from the likes of NY Times, Nat Geo, CNN, and many other UNLIKELY news outlets. If you thought this was a rah rah pro hunting film you were terribly mistaken my friend. This is a documentary about breeding and hunting of animals and how the value of them keeps them alive. From my Dorper Sheep in one scene to the iconic rhino and yes the nasty crocs the theme that carries throughout this film is not just hunting but breeding animals that have value.
Regards,
Philip
PS I’m mad at the unnamed hunter as well

It will likely be the 12th or 13 on he 10AM morning show. There probably will be more than one interview. Trophy shows on CNN (edited for time) Sunday January the 14th.
I’ll keep you updated on this thread.
Thanks,
Philip

Bought it and watched it with my five year old who spends most of his time playing “pretend Africa” which mimics a hunting show.

I think most of us as hunters are appalled at the scenes with your costar as it implicates the rest of us through association of the sport. I found his girlfriend to be particularly vile.

Through it all the my 5yo said we need to make sure proper hunting continues so he can see all those animals one day in Africa. I think the message comes through ultimately.

Thanks! Yea that hunter and his wife/girlfriend are terrible. I found when I watch it a second time though I’m not quite so mad at them and realize they may just not know any better. There are plenty of dumb and lazy hunters and this true film shows us one of them. I hope it shows I am the opposite of them. They are in a small fenced game farm and I am in Caprivi and Zambezi Valley hunting hard, really hard. In Zim on a 21 day Safari I took just 6 trophy animals (not including bait animals). It’s not for everyone these hard remote hunts but it’s what I enjoy.

Philip

Just rented this on amazon. My wife and I watched it. It was nice seeing an open view on the topics at hand. Very informative, not what I thought but then again I don’t know what I was getting into but glad I did.
The “hunter” if you will is an a$$ hat. But I think it’s good to see multiple sides on these topics. Thanks for bringing these topics to film and working for a great cause. I hope it reaches more people.
Oh congrats on your trophy as well.

Watched the movie yesterday. Very well done- I felt it gave a more balanced look at wildlife and hunting than I expected.

Regarding the other hunter, I think it was actually important to include him. He is the stereotype that anti and non hunters often think of. Showing them and then showing you, as the well researched, ethical, and emotionally connected with the animals hunter- it's an important contrast to highlight. I could see a non-hunter seeing how you hunt and finding that to be acceptable conduct even if hunting isn't for them. Equally, everyone can observe those other hunters and see how thier conduct is wrong.

I was also fascinated by the hostility towards John Hume. I really can't understand how he can be considered anything other than a passionate conservationist.

He might be one of the last hopes for rhinos and he's just trying to find a way to raise money to continue his conservation efforts. That the animal rights people would rather have the species go extinct than have someone make $1 off them- madness

Thanks! And an update on my lion: I have all permits secured and it is in the hands of the shipper now. Fingers crossed.

You are 100% right. The animal rights activists would rather they be extinct than private owners have them or any animals. They are communists!
