Toyota 70 series

Don't get me wrong, for bush use a landcruiser tray is really the only choice with its cousin the troop carrier next in line if you want to carry a number or people. Can get 6 or 7 blokes with rifles and Sambar in the back no problem (at least not for the driver). We have been using Landcruisers for more then 20 years in the victorian high country chasin sambar deer and I say with complete certainty that as far as build quality and strength these vehicles are getting worse. The last one we (traded 2010) was full of cracks. When Toyota added turbos to the 4.2lt 6cyl diesel power increase was a welcome improvement (especially heavy loads up hill), unfortunately the engine idle is too high making it hard to go slow enough in low range 4wd over rough ground (worse if the AC is on).

Marius,
Not sure what year landcruiser you are referring to, however the new 4.5 lt V8 common rail turbo diesel has a computer engine management system. In fact I believe that even the 4.2lt turbo 6cyl was a common rail as well and also computerised. As with all these new vehicles bad quality diesel can kill the common rail fuel injection system (not all that a uncommon occurrence with hilux and lancruiser).

As far as built for a purpose well maybe, however with it's high asking price its almost in the luxury car market range (be it the bottom end) and it is sold here as a light commercial vehicle.

Also the new twin cab landcruiser ute (4 door) is so strong that if the wind gets a hold of the front doors and blows them open you end up with $15k repair bill because of the toyota tough front door stop that breaks and allows the front door to slam into front quater panel.

We need to compare apples with apples. A Land Cruiser is built for a purpose. Whether it's hunting 250 days a year, hitching the plough behind the Cruiser, because the tractor is broken,

Hmm, wonder how long the new landcruiser would last since the front suspension is now coil sprung rather they the stronger leaf springs they use to have (yes, better comfort on the hwy). Toyota suspension is notoriously famous for being crap, the first thing you need to do is replace it sooner rather then later if you use the vehicle in the bush at all. In Oz "cruiser droop" is almost as common a term as "G'Day mate".

I have also herd that Toyota will not update these vehicles to comply with 5 start ancap rating and as a result rental and fleet buyers who are preferring this rating more and more ( probably cheaper insurance) may not buy these vehicles. Wonder what the effect will be?

I'll take my 2014 Dodge Ram 4x4 5.7 ltr engine any day over the hilux Toyota. I don't need to worry about towing capacity either. 20 miles to the gallon highway and about 14 towing a heavy load. So yes we yanks have big ass trucks to fit our big asses in comfort. By the way my first ram 1500 a 2000 model is now owned by my brother and still on the road at over 200,000 miles with all original parts except tires ,brakes, filters, and battery.

ha ha ha ha , hope your ass is cosy and rosie , Charlie......
20 mile to the gallon is actually better than I thought them tanks could ever do ...........
200,000 miles = 320,000 kms, most all hiluxs do that ,standing on their head .mate.
ive taken my opinion of your tanks from ,only what l seen in b.c . and just think they wernt overly practical, off the road .
they had shit tins of horse power, definately big enough top live in , and hoooooge trays.

This last trip to Africa, we were on the back roads in the Limpopo Province and hands down you could feel how well that Toyota ran...tough as hell

Oh, definitely love my Land Rover. Got lost hunting moose a few weeks ago. Ended up driving through door high washouts, mud holes and down old trails. All the while I was panicking I was surrounded by nice leather and a great stereo. The guys with the pickups thought the LR4 was too pretty for the bush but the Rover never missed a beat through all of it.

Paid $3.25/g in Oklahoma Thursday for diesel. Gas at $2.89/g. The price is coming down over here. Got to love the good oil companies "fracking" all the shale formations. The "experts" say fracking has caused the price in the USA to be $.40-.90/g. lower than if the fracking boom hadn't happened. Look how much everyone loves the oil companies for doing that!

All the best.

bluey
live 2 1/2 hrs north east of melbourne. Very touristy and thus the high fuel price. I am fishing in South Australia and diesel here $ 1.48 lt

Best off road truck ive owned has to be the series 3 landrover .
Had 3 of them over the years , go almost anywhere and you dont mind chucking all your wet gear , rifles , muddy dog
in the cab and the wife on the back .
The best alround truck has to be the 70 series flat deck , had a 350 chev installed when it was new .
It was actually cheeper to run than the original straight 6 engine and man it could go and sounded mean .

by the way diesel is $2 dollars a litre here on stewart island !
